SANDI SHILHANEK | Stepping Out of March

This is the first weekend of April, so that means it’s time to tell you some of what I read in March. I can’t believe it but I managed to read eleven books in March, and listen to 3 audios. So here’s three books that struck me for one reason or another…

I read the debut novel from author Kimberly Fisk, Lake Magic. I bought this book because I liked the cover, the blurb sounded good, and the topper…it had a cover quote from a favorite author, Susan Wiggs. When I finished Lake Magic I knew I had a new author to be looking for, and would recommend this title to one and all.

I also was surprised by the fact that I read Big Girl by Danielle Steel, and overall enjoyed it. It didn’t take long for some of the things that annoy me inSteel’s work to come forward, but if you could ignore that, and concentrate on the story and lesson that was within the pages Big Girlbecomes a book that has a good lesson about comparing siblings, and how it can affect them long term in a variety of ways. If you are or were a Steel fan this might be one to check into.

I also read Hard To Hold by Stephanie Tyler. I had heard really good things about this title, and since it was on my kindle I thought why not. Unfortunately I would have to say this didn’t quite do it for me, but I have the second title in the series, and am willing to try again, because you never know…it might have been my mood and not the book.

In audio I listened to Burn by Linda Howard, Ain’t She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Mine Are Spectacular by Janice Kaplan and Linda Schnurnberger. Of the three I have to say I enjoyed them all, but if I had to pick a least favorite it would be Burn.

I failed to meet my goal of reading the DFWTeareaders author for the month who was Shelly Laurenston, or to read the challenge word for my yahoo group which was wind.

How was your month? Did you discover a treasure? Hopefully there wasn’t a dud, but if there was are you willing to tell us?

Until next week happy page turning.

Re: SANDI SHILHANEK | Stepping Out of March

I too have read several Danielle Steele novels. There fine, just not my favorites. I'm sure I'll read more though. I read Linda Howard's "Burn" recently and even though I found it hard to put down, when I look back on it, the story does not feel true. I'm sure I'll be reading more of her books too.

I have been so inreading tis month, is it the dreary ohio weather?? i did read ONE GOOD DOG by Susan Wilson which was extremely good. I am only a few pages into THE LAST WARRIOR BY Karen Kay, which seems good. Hopefully my sunny porch will call my name this week!!
(Barbara Studer 9:23am April 4, 2010)

I have Big and Lake Magic on my tbr. I too took LM because the cover attracted me and the back blurb made me buy it.

I am currently reading Kristan Higgans The Next Best Thing and am really enjoying it but havent had the time to just sit down and read it - reading in bits and pieces - I dont like that.

Also have Hard to Hold on tbr and read Aint She Sweet years ago - loved. Love SEP's funny dialogue.

Have also enjoyed recently Body Heat - Carly Phillips, Something About You - Julie James, Divorced Desparate and Deceived - Christie Craig, Mary Marguerite Daughtridge's Sealed with a Ring - VVG. Can you tell I am a contemp gal? LOL.

Wasnt wild about Janet Chapman's Tempt Me IF You Can - couldnt sit down and read that one; read it in bits and pieces, maybe that is why I just couldn't get into it.

Happy Easter to all! Have lots of chocolate while you are reading.

Sandra, I tend to read Stee because as I've said many times she was my first big girl author, and I feel some
sort of loyalty to her. It's nice to find that every now and then she writes one I really can say I enjoyed.
Another by her I liked was Sisters.

Barbara, it's good to hear you liked One Good Dog, because I've been hearing a lot of praise for it, and have
been debating. You might just make me hit buy this weekend.

Pat, whenever I have to read a book in fits and starts I always wonder would I have liked it better if I could
have read it in one piece, or am I really reading in fits and starts because I don't like it, and can't force
myself to sit for long periods of time.

Hope everyone has a great Easter Sunday whether or not you celebrate.
(Sandi Shilhanek 10:12am April 4, 2010)

I've read one Danielle Steel novel and didn't like it. It was PALOMINO and those who enjoy her books have told me that it is not one of her best, but I've got so many authors that I do enjoy, so I've never tried another by her.
I finally got around to reading some books that I've had a number of years, THE PRISONER by Karyn Monk. I really enjoyed this book, because the plot was out of the ordinary, as was the time 1861. Mary Balogh's INDISCREET is a thoroughly enjoyable Regency story. I also read a book by Elswyth Thane, an older author who is best known for her Williamsburg novels. This was one of her first books, THE TUDOR WENCH (1932). It's about Elizabeth I from her childhood to her accession to the English throne. It's based for the most part on letters and other writings of the time, around which she builds some fictional dialog and feelings. The Appendix gives a wealth of interesting facts in the original texts, though transcribed from the often hard-to-understand English of the time. It made me yearn to read more of the period.
A new book was the first in Susan Andersen's Novels of the Final Prophecy series, NIGHTKEEPERS. I'm not a huge paranormal fan, but this one intrigued me because of its roots in the Mayan culture and I wasn't disappointed. The next, DAWNKEEPERS, is on my tbr pile.
Have a wonderful Easter!

Hi Sandi,
Although I'm a true Nora Roberts fan, I had never read her J D Robb IN DEATH series. So...last fall I started collecting them and with a few fellow reviewers assistance I finally accumulated all of them and started reading in late Feb. I finished ALL of them by middle March and all I can say is "WHY IN THE HECK DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THEM???" LOL Now, I feel like part of my family has deserted me since I have to wait until this fall for her next one.
I also read/reviewed Cara Elliott's new one, TO SURRENDER TO A ROGUE. This is the second in her Circle of Sin Series. She was a new author to me when I read TO SIN WITH A SCOUNDREL, the first in this series, but she is definitely one of my new favorite authors!

I'll definitely be checking out LAKE MAGIC, I adore Susan Wiggs, so if she and you are recommending it, then I know it will be great!

Have a great week!
:)

I have read all of Stepanies books and I liked them, especially the last one. And Danielle Steel's was good.. I just read Ice by Linda Howard, I will have to get Burn..
And SEP.. well anything she writes is great in my book..
I read Angel's Peach and Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr and Lori Foster's Back in Black this month.. And so many more..
(Kathleen O'Donnell 10:40am April 4, 2010)

I read quite a bit in March, Angel's Peak and Moonlight Road, a couple older Nora Roberts (Stanislaski ones), I read Hannah Alexander for the first time, enjoyed the trilogy about the doctors in Kansas (Solumn Oath and Solumn Pledge of two of them). I reread and enjoyed a more local author - Barbara MacKinnon's Where Rivers Meet. She will be at my book club this week, looking forward to that.
(MaryAnn Frerichs 10:57am April 4, 2010)

Loved House Rules by Jodi Picoult

I need to check out some of the books you mentioned, they sound good. Happy Easter everyone!
(Jeanine Lesperance 10:57am April 4, 2010)

My husband and I are National Park 'nuts' and I really enjoy Nevada Barr's books. Each one is set in a different Park. If we have already visited the Park she is writing about I enjoy following along to the different places. If we haven't visit the Park yet, I have places to look for when we do.
(Karin Tillotson 11:40am April 4, 2010)

The weather in my area turned extremely chilly and so we used the fireplace and I read Fleece Navidad by Maggie Sefton. It was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I also pulled out Raintree: Inferno by Linda Howard and was not so entertained. It surprised me since I have loved so many of her books.
(G. Bisbjerg 11:51am April 4, 2010)

I also read Lake Magic for my book club but I didn't care for it. I just didn't connect with the characters. I just started reading ALOT of Romance again so I am reading a wide variety of different styles right now. I read First Drop of Crimson, which I liked a lot and will now go read Jeaniene Frost's other series and I am reading some Julie Garwood, because well, I never had.
(Mindy Holt 11:52am April 4, 2010)

Hey Sandi, you did get quite a few books read. In March, I read Forbidden Falls and Angel's Peak by Robyn Carr...LOVED them!!! Joss Ware's entire Envy Chronicles series to date...Beyond the Night, Embrace the Night Eternal, and Abandon the Night. This series is wonderful as well. The setting is 50 years after now, when people have to learn to survive after something cataclysmic happens to change the geography and demographic of the world as we know it. I am not very good at explaining it. Joss makes you think as you read too. Everything is believable. You should check her out...she is Colleen Gleason, author of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles. I also read Kristan Higgins's Too Good to be True and The Next Best Thing. Love her voice and writing style as well. Several Hqn Blazes were in my reading list too. I can't remember the titles of any more of the books I read. Maybe I should start keeping a list for these occasions...LOL!

Happy Easter everyone!

Peace and love,
Paula R.

I found, read and fell in love
with a YA series during
March.Nancy Collins-Vamp series.
(Lisa Richards 12:34pm April 4, 2010)

Don't feel bad about the lack of books this month. Several people I talked to have had the same thing happen, including me. I only read thirteen print and ebooks in March. Of those, six were rereads(two because book 3 came out)and only one may not be reread at a future date(an ebook that was only about 20 pages long). And since I have 86 read for the whole year up to now, 13 for March is definitely low.
(Carol Cobun 12:44pm April 4, 2010)

I also read Big Girl and liked it very much. I loved Mariah Stewart's Coming Home, her first Chesapeake Diaries. Read Summer of Two Wishes by Julia London and liked it als. Read Hannah's List by Debbie Macomber and didn't care for it at all. I started to read other books and found them boring, so I stopped. Also read Callandar Square by Anne Perry; it was okay. Someone recommended the Julia books by Ann B. Ross, started the first one Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind and put it down!
(Peg Fragale 12:53pm April 4, 2010)

One book that stands out to me I read in March was Kaki Warner's Pieces of Sky, it was a fabulous read and its on my keeper shelf!
(Gail Hurt 12:55pm April 4, 2010)

(Jeni Matthews 1:07pm April 4, 2010)

This month I read The End of Mr Y for the second time and I adored it, I love being sucked into a world that a book creates!

I was also luckily enough to read Me, Myself and Why by MaryJanice Davidson which was pretty awesome and guys you should totally read it when it comes out :D
(Jeni Matthews 1:10pm April 4, 2010)

Well there were a lot of different books that I read this past month...some of the highlights include Wicked Burn by Beth Kery, Animal Attraction by Charlene Teglia, Fragile by Shiloh Walker, Heart of the Wolf by Terry Spear and Triple Exposure by Colleen Thompson.
(Anna Hoque 1:16pm April 4, 2010)

A lot of people have told me that SISTERS by Danielle Steel did for them what BIG GIRL did for you...reopened the Steel possibility....and my sister even loaned me a copy. Over a year ago and it still sits on my shelf. Maybe one of these days????
(Cindy Ferrell 1:20pm April 4, 2010)

I gave up on Danielle Steele after the first three. I suppose I should try her again but as the saying goes there are so many books and so little time.
(Joyce Mandle 1:33pm April 4, 2010)

I have not read Big Girl yet but I think I am going to like it. I did read One Day At A Time by Steel and really enjoyed it. I don't find to many books that I don't like. Have a very Happy Easter!!
(Julie Harper 3:33pm April 4, 2010)

I have read alot of good books last month. I enjoyed Angel's Peak and Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr. I used to read Danielle Steele but not interested anymore. I have a nice tbr pile to read of a lot of different authors. Happy Easter to everyone. Diana Smith
(Diana Smith 3:51pm April 4, 2010)

In March I read 15 books! I won't bore you with all of them. Two of the books were Blaze, Blazing Bedtime Stories III & IV, these are fun reading. I also reread a couple of Nora Roberts books, all three Vigin River Books by Robyn Carr for 2010, love this series. Also on the list were a Rachel Gibson and a Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I enjoyed. Now I have started on Nora Roberts Sign of Seven Trilogy, which I have had sitting on my TBR shelf. I just completed the first book, Blood Brothers & started on the second. My impression right now is that these will not be favorites and I will probably never reread but that will be determined at the end of the series. New out this month, Jill Shalvis, Instant Temptation & Nora's 3rd book in the wedding/bride series. I can't wait to get to the book store to pick up both. Sadly I have to wait until there is more moola in the bank account!!!
Everyone enjoy your Easter Sunday wherever you are & whatever you do.
(Donna McClure 4:16pm April 4, 2010)

I also read LAKE MAGIC and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to more books from Kimberly Fisk. I read both that and CAPTIVE OF SIN by Anna Campbell for book club. I also read MAD, BAD AND BLONDE by Cathie Linz, DIVORCED, DESPERATE AND DECEIVED by Christie Craig as finishing up all the latest Virgin River books from Robyn Carr. I re-read JEMIMA J by Jane Green for about the zillionth time.

There were several re-issued books that I read during March because I'd missed them before - THE CINDERELLA DEAL and WHAT A LADY WANTS by Jennifer Crusie and CARNAL INNOCENCE by Nora Roberts. I LOVED that book.

I'm currently reading ON THE STEAMY SIDE by Louise Edwards. I went to her booksigning in March and it was by far the nicest, classiest signing I've been to before. BIG GIRL is in my TBR stack as well as BRAVA VALENTINE and SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.
(Jill Hayden 4:28pm April 4, 2010)

I haven't read a Danielle Steel book for years. I am re-reading all the classics right now. Dickens here I come.
(Mary Preston 4:58pm April 4, 2010)

No duds but lots of favorites: Alyssa Day and her Warriors of Atlantis; Jennifer Ashley, that was a new find, and her Prime Mates, hope more are coming in that series; Angela Knight and her Master series.
(Diane Sadler 6:49pm April 4, 2010)

In March I read: Robyn Carr's Moonlight Road & (reread) Blue Skies (one of my personal fabs), Mary Daughtridge's SEALed with a Ring, Denise A. Agnew's Male Call, Sherryl Woods' Home in Carolina, Shelly Laurenston's The Mane Squeeze, and Dakota Cassidy's Accidentally Demonic.
(Summer Sharp 7:23pm April 4, 2010)

Of the 15 books I read in March, I had two treasures--Julie James' Something About You and Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me.
(G S Moch 7:30pm April 4, 2010)

I read quite a few books in March, my favorite was The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. I've read Danielle Steele since I was young, and once in a while find one that doesn't sound like her usual stuff. I just bought her last two books and am looking forward to reading them, but have some others that have been in my TBR pile longer so am working on some of them first.
(Brenda Rupp 7:51pm April 4, 2010)

I'm adding Lake Magic to my tbr list. Just finished Joy Fielding's Charley's Web and really enjoyed it. Didn't figure out "who did it" till right before she told me. :) Hope everyone had a great Easter.
(Diana Donahoo 8:24pm April 4, 2010)

I started reading Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr and am enjoying it immensely. I find myself wanting to continue reading instead of doing necessary things. LOL I recently finished reading Pushing Up Daisies by Rosemary Harris. There was a lot of interesting gardening information in this mystery book, but I had a bit of trouble keeping up with the various characters. Found myself thinking: Now whom was that? The two books are both rather thick, but the chapters in Pushing Up Daisies were short whereas those in Moonlight Road are lengthy. I prefer to at least finish a chapter in each reading session, so the later takes a while to do so.
(Gladys Paradowski 9:33pm April 4, 2010)

I read Stolen Fury by Elisabeth Naughton and loved it. I also read the first 2 books of the accidental demon slayer series by Angie Fox and I enjoyed them very much.
(Arantza Cazalis 9:37pm April 4, 2010)

I too, didn't read as many books this month as before. I was helping my friend. However, I did read two Famous Firsts books. One of them, "Heart of an Eagle" by Lindsay MCKenna was excellent; it dealt with two people who had tragedy in their pasts and found true love while hunting down a poaching ring in CO. Another book, "Stranger," from Harlequin's Spice line was my first (and last)foray into that line but beyond the kinky sex was a tender love story and insight into death through the eyes of a funeral director. I hope that my reading is better in April.
(Trudy Miner 10:20pm April 4, 2010)

This month I read 8 books, which is pretty good for me. Unlike most of the others on here, I read all Harlequins - 3 SRS (Top Secret Deliveries series) - I thought they were really good, 2 Blaze (one a new to me author), 2 Desires and a Presents. The Blazes were both smoking hot! Liked all. Hoping to read more this month, but so far the beautiful weather has been calling my name:)

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend.
(Amanda Reeder-erdly 10:49pm April 4, 2010)

I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in
quite some time. I think I out grew
them some time ago without noticing.
You've given me the idea that I should
go check out her books and give it
another try. Happy Easter!
(Jung Ja Ahn 11:15pm April 4, 2010)

I have never read any Danielle Steel novels but..I may try them on your recomendation. I am a huge Nora Roberts/JD Robb fan and auto-buy her books.
(Cindy Olp 11:53pm April 4, 2010)

Last month I finished listening to
ELDEST by Paolini I'm not working
anymore, so my drive time for audio
books is gone.
I read SINFUL SURRENDER by new
author Beverly Kendall. It is historical
romance. I enjoyed it. A good first
book. Personal preference, but this is
a relationship book and I prefer books
that have more than the relationship
as the driving plot line.
THE ANGEL by Carla Neggers. Good
suspense. It is the second book in a
series. It stands alone, but I liked the
other characters and am almost
finished with book one, THE WIDOW.
I will definitely be reading book 3, THE
MIST.
I may not be working, but I certainly
am not getting much reading done.
(Patricia Barraclough 1:20pm April 5, 2010)

We read a lot of the same authors. Stephanie Tyler, Linda Howard, I also like Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner. I started reading Brian Freeman books & love them. also Cody McFadyen. Nora Roberts is great both her & J.D. Robb. I read all kinds of books fr. mysteries to love stories. There all great. If you love really great thrillers try John Lutz.
