Sara Reyes | I'm thankful ...

for books...and authors and storytellers.

On the day of the year where our nation collectively gives thanks there are a few things that I'm truly grateful to have. One of those and maybe not the very first but near the top of the list is the ability to read. It's so much in the fabric of my person I don't realize it's something not everyone has. I can read, read fast and comprehend quickly. Reading has taught me so much over the years and allowed me to visit worlds I'd never be able to travel, meet people I'd never know, be so happy with my own life and give me a business I love every day, even at 4:30am.

Authors and books and publishers of books are wondrous devices that feed my obsession. This year, I'm truly thankful for all of them.

Yes, and I'm also thankful for my family who supports me by knowing not to bother me when I have a book in hand and for my strange obsession in reading and meeting new readers and authors. For allowing our home to be opened to visitors each month to talk about books and authors without complaint and actually getting into the fun of cooking and putting up with vociferous conversations. To the point of sometimes joining in. Last week's turkey dinner was delicious!

And to close with my short list of thanks, I'm very thankful for all my friends who love to read. I feel so rich with friends because everyone I met who shares my love of a good story even if it may not be to my taste is a friend because we share something in common. We LOVE to read.

Re: Sara Reyes | I'm thankful ...

I'm thankul that I have a roof over my head this year. That wasn't the case a couple of years ago, when I lost my house after my Husband lost his job and we were forced to move. The wind is howling outside, and I'm thankful that the electricity hasn't gone out, so that I can cook our turkey. As a rule, high winds mean no power out here!! I'm also thankful for the small blessings I've been given throughout the year. I'll concentrate on those today, and leave my problems behind for another day. Happy Thanksgiving!!

So much to be thankful for! Today I am particularly blessed to be recovering from shingles on my face. My vision is improving again and I can READ!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I'm thankful for the life I have and the love of my husband and children. I love to read and am a teaching assistant at the local school. I work with those that fine learning difficult - when they start to read confidently the look on their faces as it all makes sense is priceless.

I'm thankful for my family and friends. We're healthy and have jobs. I have my books, crochet, knitting and sewing hobbies that add a lot to my life & others by sharing/teaching those skills. Life may not be as affluent as it once was but we're still afloat & in many ways it's sooo much better.
I have to work today but it's not bad..I'll be home in time for dinner/supper & I don't have to cook AND clean up. I'm just so grateful for everyone & everything, I can't complain.

There is so much in my life to be thankful for, but I'm blessed with an abundance of happiness that I can spread to all I meet and touch throughout the year. I smile a lot, and say hello to strangers constantly. I try to touch each person in a small way and let them know someone cares. The smiles I receive back are humbling and rewarding. Thanksgiving time is a bonus.

I'm thankful for my husband! He is the most loyal man I've ever met. To me and to his Mother. She is dying and we brought her home. He has been by her side whenever she needs him even though we hired a 24/7 nurse. We don't know how long it will be but she fell and broke her hip in June and it has been one thing after another since then and he has been there twice a day every day since, to help her eat as she is blind. I got in a car accident and broke my neck, and am in a brace, we are hoping it will heal. He has been there for me too, through 7 surgerys and meningitis, he is my rock and after 12 years of marriage I love him as much as I did when we first married if not more!
(Brenda Rupp 9:05pm November 25, 2010)

I am thankful for my hubby, who seems to understand my reading "habit/addiction." He even gave me my Christmas present today, a Kindle! And still knows that I will be keepiing and getting paper-bound books as well as ebooks. What a man!
You talked about being thankful to be able to read. You got close to me with that one. I was told by my 1st grade teacher that I "was stupid & would never learn" at the end of the school year because I could read (this in front of my mom & the principle). Turns out I had sever dysexia (I was doing 3rd grade math after all), but no one had caught my problem with letters. So I almost didn't learn to read, or at least not well. Luckily, I had a mother that cared and took matters into her own hands. Now I read almost a book a day!!! But for my mom missing that meeting, I could have slipped through the system like so many still do. I always encourage parents to have their kids checked for things like this. It is easily corrected with the right training, but very hard to overcome after years of avoidance.

I, too, am gratefull I can read! As a child I had a major focusing eye problem
that did not resolve itself (with a lot of work) until I was thirty-five. Yes, I
managed to graduate high school (many time falling asleep over my book
when studying when I just couldn't make any more effort for that day. I
haven't had a bookless hand since that day (making up for lost time) s oI truly
understand the saying "so many books so little time".

Im Thankful for my family.. My mother has had a very rough year. She loss her husband of 25 yrs and this is the first time she has been on her own. She has had to learn to live alone. I've been there to help her adjust but I can't help her with the emothion part of it except tp be there when she needs to cry or to talk. So the Thanksgiving she came to my home and it was a very relaxing, enjoyable day and she laughed and really just was herslef all day. It was great to see. I'm so glad I could be with her and see the old her surfacing for the day. It was a great feeling watching it all. Even the grandkids have fun with her...I'm also greatful for our good health and that everyone is doing well in their lives...I missed not having my middle daughter and granddaughters here but the rest were here and it was a good time for all..
