Dee Davis | Living in the Now

Been thinking about interesting people of late.   The things others do that make me wish I was doing that too.   I suspect that lives viewed from the outside always seem more exciting than they are.  I know when someone introduces me to speak and I hear all the stuff I’ve done, I always wonder who the speaker is --oh...me.

It’s so easy it seems to let our lives get sidetracked into "what ifs" --instead of "I haves".   Our pasts have a way of dictating our present.   And some (me included) can let that paralyze them into losing self-esteem.  Which is hard enough to come by in the first place. Conversely there are also people who are ruled by the future.  Must do this, must do that, and all of it before I reach a certain age or it just won’t count.   Again, I find that I am prone to this particular human weakness.  I often think why didn’t I start writing earlier in my life, then I’d be like so and so.  (Another trap we often set for ourselves -- contrast and comparison).

But you know the truth is the only moment that counts is the now.  It’s the only one we can be sure of.  And I think we need to put or focus on that.  On living each second as if it were the most important one.   And overanalyzing the past or the future only wastes the precious minutes we spend doing it.  If opportunity knocks, you won’t be able to hear it if you’re having a pity party or a planning session.  Better to wait, ready for whatever it is life holds in store, and then grab it with gusto.

I’ve always said that my only goal in life is to die without regret.  That’s a tall order, I know, but I think it helps me to keep focus, to make sure that when I feel overwhelmed and overshadowed, I can pull myself out of the dark and step into the light--one of my own making.

I think in DEEP DISCLOSURE, the fourth in my A-Tac series, that’s the lesson both Tucker and Alexis have to learn.  They’ve got to understand that there are no promises, no guarantees.  Sometimes you just have to jump off the cliff, feet first, and have a little faith that things will turn out all right.

And of course what I love about romance novels is that the leap is almost always worth it.  But the funny thing is, that I also find it’s true in life.  Sometimes you wind up a little beat up for the journey, but in the end, there’s usually something that happens that enriches the path we’re on.

What about you guys?  Do you live in the future, the past or the now?  Maybe there’s something to be said for all three?

Re: Dee Davis | Living in the Now

I spend most of my time living in the now. The past is best left there and it's hard enough to keep up with the now to try to live in the future. As long as I'm living I figure I'm doing alright!
Good luck and happy writing!
(Tracie Travis 2:07am September 7, 2011)

I think I live in a little of all three. My past is what shape me to who I'm now. If I let go of my past, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I live in the now because there is no guarantee of what the future hold for me. My life could end tomorrow so I need to live every moment of it so I won't have any regrets. I look toward the future because I believe I could be a better person or make a difference in someone's life.
(Kai Wong 2:15am September 7, 2011)

I live in the present for the most part, but I can't help remembering events from the past or planning for the future!
(Diane Brixius 7:16am September 7, 2011)

I think the future mostly... Can't help it since I have to plan everything around my kid....
(May Pau 8:06am September 7, 2011)

I live in the now as the past is something I can't change and the future looks pretty bleak so just taking it a day at a time.
I loved Dark Deceptions!
(Karen Gervasi 8:40am September 7, 2011)

I live for now - life is too short, I have lost a few relatives to cancer and I think this has changed my view of how I look at life for me. For my children I look to there future, my baby girl has just got into University and is looking ahead to that!
(Barbara Hanson 8:44am September 7, 2011)

Kai I think you're rigth that all three have to affect us. But I
also think living in the present is a good way to go. And
Barbara my daughter just started college this week! Thanks
Karen --glad you liked Dark Deceptions!
(Dee Davis 10:13am September 7, 2011)

I agree with the previous posters :) I mostly live in the present although I have been working on trying to plan a bit better for the future. I try to allow my past to help me in the present by learning from my mistakes, but I'm pretty much moment to moment.
(Erin Fender 10:14am September 7, 2011)

I try to live for now but I do have a tendancy for the What if's. I hate it and wish I could stop but I do it alot.
(Vicki Hancock 10:26am September 7, 2011)

Vicki, I'm so with you on that!
(Dee Davis 10:40am September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the now. Sometime I live in the past, but that is okay, because they say you have to learn from your mistakes. You don't want to forget those, so that way you don't keep making mistakes. I try to just live day to day.
This is a new author for me and these books look great. I would love to win and read so please choose me for the giveaway.
(Chris Bails 11:15am September 7, 2011)

I think I am a definite live in the moment type person. My
family an I travel with my husbands job. We can live in a
place 2-3 months then move and be somewhere over a year. It
drives my family nuts that we fly by the seat of our pants
most of the time. I am a stay at home mom and my goal is to
raise humans that will enhance the world or be a face that
brightens the world instead of adding to the gloom. :)
(Crystal Scott 11:16am September 7, 2011)

Crystal what a fabulous life you must lead! Always an
adventure! And I agree Chris we definitely have to learn
from our experiences--both good and bad!
(Dee Davis 11:34am September 7, 2011)

I am living in the present. The past is over with and the
future did not happen yet.
(George Ferris 11:48am September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the future, but the past seems to come up and bite me in the (you know where), when I least expect it. Then I have to start at square one again. I never get discouraged, at least I try not to. I just pull myself up from my bootstraps, and that gives me more determination to try harder the next time. I also try not to let anyone get in my way anymore. There was a time where I was a real pushover, but as you get older, you learn a lot of things from experience. Through it all you learn to do things with manners and grace, of course. Otherwise people start calling you names that begin with the letter "B." lol My Mother taught me better than that, and I think that's where I got my strength from. I also got a bit of it from my Father, but even though he was my hero through most of my life, he let me down later in life. That's another story for another day. I enjoyed your posting very much. It was very thought-provoking. I'm also looking forward to reading your book.
(Peggy Roberson 12:12pm September 7, 2011)

Thanks Peggy! I think I'm just getting more crabby as I get
older :)
(Dee Davis 12:42pm September 7, 2011)

Wise words, George!!!
(Dee Davis 12:42pm September 7, 2011)

I am enjoying this series.. have to get this one! Sometimes I think about the past... the coulda beens, I like to focus on the here and now, but do have wishes and dreams for the future...
(Colleen Conklin 12:45pm September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the present, with thoughts to the future. But I dream in the past, present & future (depending on what I'm reading).
(Diane Sallans 12:56pm September 7, 2011)

Ah well, Diane, I'm not sure dreams count, since we can't
control them at all.
(Dee Davis 12:58pm September 7, 2011)

I live in the present, because when my Dad got cancer, my whole life view change. So I value everyday.
(Danny Brüggemann 1:48pm September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the now and plan for the future. Nothing I can do about the past. Your book sounds great- can't wait to read it.
(Christine Arcidiacono 1:51pm September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the now...The past is behind you and the future unwritten, but today is a gift which is why they call it the present.
(Tonya Williams 2:02pm September 7, 2011)

You guys all sound so wise! And Danny--I've been right
there with you!
(Dee Davis 2:06pm September 7, 2011)

I think that our present is influenced by our past, good or bad. I do try to live in the present, but plan for the future.
I really like this series! I am so glad to see Tucker getting his own story.
(Cheryl Castings 2:28pm September 7, 2011)

I live in the now, because it's the only time you can truly change but I keep an eye on the future. As others have said, the past is done.
(Fresh Fiction 2:30pm September 7, 2011)

Cheryl, I am too. Tucker wasn't supposed to have been
book four--in fact I didn't even know he existed until I
started writing Dangerous Desires. And of course then he
had to have a book!
(Dee Davis 2:45pm September 7, 2011)

My problem is projecting future problems or dilemmas. When I catch myself doing it I just have to tell myself to QUIT. I can not control anything or anyone other than myself.
(MaryEllen Hanneman 4:04pm September 7, 2011)

I do try to live in the present and appreciate this particular day but I do think about the past and the future too and what might be or might have been.
(Maureen Emmons 4:16pm September 7, 2011)

For me it's the middle of the night--that's when I usually
wind up overthinking everything.
(Dee Davis 4:21pm September 7, 2011)

Congrats on the new release, Dee. Can't wait to read Tucker's story. I think I'm living in the present and for the future, but also spend a lot of time thinking about the past and sometimes that is a waste of time and other times it helps you deal with the present.
(Jane Cheung 4:22pm September 7, 2011)

I really like your "live for now" philosophy! I sometimes do live in the past when I remember good times from what seems like just the other day. And, I live in the future when I daydream of what I would want for me if i could have whatever my little heart desires. But, honestly, "living for now" is probably the best idea.
(Sandy Fielder 4:27pm September 7, 2011)

Congrats on your new release, sounds wonderful! I take life one day at a time so I guess I live for the now.
(Gail Hurt 5:10pm September 7, 2011)

Good luck to all the entrants!
(Dee Davis 5:55pm September 7, 2011)

I try to live in the day. Living in the past can be destructive if things have not been too good.
(Angela Clark 7:10pm September 7, 2011)

I think I live in the now, but I do visit the past every now and again, and when I'm dreaming, it's always about some day, the future.
(Lisa Kendall 7:52pm September 7, 2011)

i live in the now and try to forget the past!!!
(Jennifer Beck 8:00pm September 7, 2011)

I like living in the past as well as in the present. There was a lot of good things in the past that I like to remember. They often bring a smile to my face. I try not to dwell on the not so happy events in the past. Can't wait to read this book. Love them!
(Constance Biller 8:30pm September 7, 2011)

I think I live in the future because I'm always saving for something.
(Sue Farrell 8:46pm September 7, 2011)

I think I delve into all three, but the present is what you make of it. The past is behind, but has a way of snaeking in to remind me of my past actions good or bad or middling. The future is wide open, but needs a bit of structure if you want to aim for a goal or level higher than where you're at. The steps toward the future are unknown yet becoming closer everyday you do something positive for your endeavors. The future is what you make of it.
(Alyson Widen 8:52pm September 7, 2011)

As I think about it, I live in all three. I live in the past thinking about my youth and my parents who are now both deceased. I live in the now every day but also wonder what the future brings---both good and no so good and the unknown!
(Shirley Younger 8:56pm September 7, 2011)

I think if I didn't have regret I would have the possibilities and dreams for the future - Without the what if, I wouldn't be able to appreciate the present. Sometimes looking back is the most painful thing to do, but without it how would I grow and make things better, make me, my life, and the lives around me better.
(Carla Carlson 9:02pm September 7, 2011)

I like living in the now though I do worry about the future for my children; life changes so fast! I think about the past and mourn some of it but also have the great memories.
(Diane Sadler 9:05pm September 7, 2011)

I don't believe in living in the past. I am totally in the now. And I like to do a little planning for the future but I don't live only for tomorrow.
(Jennifer Beyer 9:08pm September 7, 2011)

I tend to live for now & plan for the future. The past brings up welcome & unwelcome memories, but that's part of life.
(Mary Preston 9:30pm September 7, 2011)

I live in the now...you can only live a day at a time, you can't change the past, you can plan for the future, but you can't live it until it's here!
(Leanna Morris 9:34pm September 7, 2011)

me i tend to live i blogs and then the books i read and want to get them done i love the history and then i love the
idea of book and they come a live
(Desiree Reilly 10:31pm September 7, 2011)

books are going on my TBR list. I think much of the time, I am sad for the past, and that holds me back. But I am always planning (and making lists)
(Barbara Studer 10:40pm September 7, 2011)

I think the past becomes more important as we age. And
maybe the present should be the key then more than ever!
(Dee Davis 10:41pm September 7, 2011)

One's past predicts and prepares one for one's present, which leads to one's future. Thus one's capacities and vectors are the unconscious composite of the entirety of one's experiences.

I was born in the shadow of an active volcano on Friday the 13th while my father was bombing another country. My entire life has been an adventure lived out around the world. My home always has been where ever I am.....at the moment I am asked.
(Carla Schuller 10:42pm September 7, 2011)

Congrats on your new release ,sounds great. I take life one day at a time. But I do worry about what the future brings for my children. Thanks for giving me a chance to win your book.
(Linda Hall 10:59pm September 7, 2011)

I tend to live in the now with an eye towards the future and trying to bear in mind the lessons of the past.
(G. Bisbjerg 11:06pm September 7, 2011)

I have to live in the now, but there are definitely a lot of days when I long for at least a part of the past. I yearn for the days when I was able to concentrate better, had more energy, could stand more "noise/sound" including music, and could remember where I've put my keys, important papers, wallet, etc. You get the drift, I'm sure. I'm glad for books which take me away from the worries; then I live only in the book.
(Sigrun Schulz 12:24pm September 8, 2011)

Dee Davis is one of my favorite authors!
(Nylne Still 10:15am September 8, 2011)

I take one day at a time and try to find one small thing each day to appreciate
and smile about.
(Sandra Spilecki 12:01pm September 8, 2011)

I try and live in the now but it isn't always easy. The past
interferes with my perceptions of now and the future needs to
be addressed at times too :S
(Ilona Fenton 1:23pm September 8, 2011)

I try to live in today, but, sometimes, it's hard not to let the past creep in and worry/thoughts of the future...
(Kelli Jo Calvert 1:34pm September 8, 2011)

Wow...count me in...would love to win a copy of the book by Dee Davis.......she is a very good [email protected]
(Lnda McFarland 1:54pm September 8, 2011)

Sounds like an interesting book.
(Shirley Nienkark 4:43pm September 8, 2011)

I live in the now (the present). Learning from experience and mistakes made in the past, I know I would have and could have done many things differently that would have significantly changed the outcome of things now in my life. Some things I would never change and love to remember the good things from the past and often wish I could go back to re-live those times all over again. It's good to dream about past fond memories and what the future holds. Books, movies, and music are wonderful outlets and enjoyment to our world of living.
(Linda Luinstra 6:04pm September 8, 2011)

I have been known to look backwards and pile up regrets only to realize they take me away from appreciating what I have in my life right now. I am trying to remember that when I made a choice to end a relationship I had pretty good reasons for doing it then and I have just forgotten them. If I am still unhappy with where I currently am I can choose to change it now and move forward to a better future.
