Sandi Shilhanek | Hurry Up And Wait...how To Stay Occupied?

This weekend I pretended to be the good wife, and took my husand’s car to have the oil changed.

While I sat in the waiting room I not only typed this blog, but observed the other people waiting with me.

One man was smarter than I and able to figure out the wireless connection the dealer offered and get online, two men had some sort of conversation about their cars, and the rest just sat their twiddling their thumbs.

I’m sure like me they were thinking about the zillion of chores awaiting them at home, but that’s just a depressing thought isn’t it? Then they were watching some sort of news debate about the state of the economy, another really depressing thought…where were the books? Not a soul brought a book.

The fact that I was the only one with not only a book, but two in my bag doesn’t really surprise me, as much as the fact that only one person besides myself brought their computer. I really thought that people needed to be more connected than my fellow waiters appeared to be.

When you have to wait what do you do to occupy the time? Do you just sit and observe your fellow waiters? Do you read a magazine? A book? Twiddle your thumbs and wish you were anywhere else?

Well, since I can’t get online and chat with my friend (which was I brought the computer in the first place) I’m going to dig my book out of the bag, and hopefully get some good page count.

Several hours later...

Now I'm home quite a bit poorer as my husband's car had an issue neither of us was aware of, and I ended up chatting with some lady so the page count didn't happen. I guess that's life. So now I'm also curious did your waiting experience end up being different at the end than when it started?

Until next week happy page turning!

I never go anywhere without a book (or
two, or three...). As long as I can read
it doesn't bother me if I have to wait.
The longer I wait, the more I get read
and my TBR pile will dwindle. I can't
imagine just sitting and twiddling my
thumbs.

Waiting is not a problem with a book or two along. I always buy bigger purses than anyone I know, cause I need room for a couple of books and a bottle of water...then I am ready for anything!
(Lauri Coates 1:19am November 1, 2009)

Depending where I have to wait,
I take a book (always) or
sometimes, I take some knitting
along with me.
(Margay Roberge 4:17am November 1, 2009)

I usually have a magazine, book or the newspaper with me.
(Jane Cheung 4:44am November 1, 2009)

Always have a book with me. Usually it's a challenge to concentrate over the television
that's almost always playing.
(Mary Hundley 6:35am November 1, 2009)

I always have a book in my bag but if worse comes to worse I'll read a magazine. I hate just staring at people or being stared at.
(Diane Sadler 8:30am November 1, 2009)

I always have a book in hand or in my purse when I go somewhere. I'm usually an impatient waiter so having a book helps. Sometimes if the wait is real long somewhere I will strike up a conversation with my fellow waiters.
(Theresa Buckholtz 10:36am November 1, 2009)

I have books downloaded on my iTouch but when I know I'm going any where with any kind of waiting time I always bring a book with me.
(Danielle DeBuono 11:08am November 1, 2009)

There is always a book in my purse or in my car because I can't even stand waiting at traffic
lights. I guess I am not one of those people that can have a conversation with just anyone so I
prefer to keep my nose in a book.
(Meredith Link 11:21am November 1, 2009)

So everyone brings a book. Are you ever amazed at how the people just sit there with nothing to
do? Not even a puzzle?
(Sandi Shilhanek 11:44am November 1, 2009)

I always take a book when I have to wait for something! Its the only way to go. Now I am not saying that sometimes I will start chatting with someone but most of the time I read.
(Gail Hurt 11:58am November 1, 2009)

I almost always have a print book but have also started taking my MP3 player so I can listen to it instead of the radio or TV that seems to be on EVERYWHERE.
(Barbs Ferris 12:08pm November 1, 2009)

I carry a daypack to keep books and water in, rather than a purse, but....very rarely take a book. I find it hard to concentrate when I'm waiting somewhere and I don't feel the book gets its just due when my mind is boinging all over the place.... Magazines or newspapers are good for waiting, crossword puzzles the best. And, I always spend time people watching...that's a must, don'tcha know!!
(Cindy Ferrell 12:42pm November 1, 2009)

99% of the time I remember to bring a book, otherwise I would go crazy.
(Joyce Mandle 12:51pm November 1, 2009)

I know I always have a book and my ipod with me for entertainment during all that "waiting" time that seems to hit during the day! Though I hate waiting in waiting rooms for anything, that's why I go to Jiffy Lube for my oil changes, LOL. Since I've started a new job I've been taking the bus and enjoy the few minutes of commute to read a few pages, but I've gotten to know the busdrivers and my fellow riders so I usually just chat with people on the bus. But just in case I always have the book for emergencies!
(Shauna George 12:52pm November 1, 2009)

If I know I have to wait I always bring a book or at least crack open a book I have downloaded on my Ipod Touch. I view waiting time as a good opportunity to get some reading done. The last time I waited for my car at a dealer I brought my homework. Never let idle time go to waste is my motto!
(Sari Nichols 1:23pm November 1, 2009)

I always carry books with me everywhere...and more than one because I don't want to be stuck if I finish one. What bothers me, however, is how television seems to be everywhere nowadays ---in the doctor's office. In every place I wait I hear the endless loud drone of TV. I can't even think with all the endless chatter. I do not take my computer everywhere. For me more and more, especially as society becomes revved up with TV and a hyperactive pace of things blaring at one, my greatest joy is turning off the television and having peace and quiet and opening a good book.
(Merri Crawford 2:04pm November 1, 2009)

Although I have e-books to read, I always carry several books in my car. I love reading, and there is nothing I love more than the new book smell!
(Tanja Haack 2:07pm November 1, 2009)

When I am going somewhere I always have a book with me. Waiting is never a problem! I do like talking to people but sometimes I would rather not. The TV at the place I take my car is never turned to anything I would watch. It is a distraction! Usually I walk over to Starbucks for my waiting, indulge in a Vanilla Latte & read. Such a pleasure. When I walk back my car is ready. If it is going to be several hours I have the shuttle service take me to visit a friend. If the waiting is at an airport I read, people watch & sometimes talk to fellow travelers, always interesting!
Someone mentioned reading at traffic lights, that is a no no for me as I think you have to stay aware of the traffic & the light changing. Sorry to sound judgemental.
Good subject!
(Donna McClure 3:31pm November 1, 2009)

I rarely go anywhere without a book. The other day as I was paying my cable bill on a day when there was a full house. The woman who waited on me asked if I thought the wait was long. I told her that for the number of customers it was rather fast. Then I showed her my book and told her I barely noticed.

When I take my car in there is always somtething I didn't count on. Of course it is a high milage car that even though repairs are expensive it is cheaper than car payments.

Ray
(Ray Getzinger 3:33pm November 1, 2009)

I won't even go into a store without a book in my purse. I also keep a Palm TX for reading or to play games (text twist being a favorite). However I'm just as likely to strike up a conversation. I just can't help myself.

Tina

Chore time is book time; always. I have even been known to annoy my husband by ignoring him in waiting rooms. His job is to listen for our names to be called. Team Driskill wins again! (or at least I do!!)
(Susan Driskill 4:46pm November 1, 2009)

I always take a book with me because you never know how long you can end up waiting. I figure even if I only get to read a few pages at least the time was spent doing something enjoyed.
(Cherie Japp 5:00pm November 1, 2009)

Glad to know that we all think alike! When I go to the doctor's, dentist's, car repair shop, hair salon, airport or any place where waiting is inevitable, I take a book. It makes the wait more pleasant and the time go faster. I have even seen people take books to outdoor concerts where you have to arrive early to get a good seat. I haven't done that because I'm with friends but it's a good idea.
(Trudy Miner 5:45pm November 1, 2009)

I always carry a book with me everywhere I go. You never know when something is going to happen where you have to wait. I sometimes do strike up conversations with people also though.
(Julie Harper 6:03pm November 1, 2009)

I always take a book, usually a back-up one as well in case I have to sit longer than planned. I *hate* to run out of reading material! Lately I've been carrying my current knitting project as well, weather permitting.

Count me in as one who doesn't understand those who just sit. I can't.
(Kay Martinez 7:37pm November 1, 2009)

I always carry a paperback book in my purse to read while waiting. I can't imagine just sitting and waiting without a good mystery in my hand.
(Teresa Ward 10:30pm November 1, 2009)

I get antsy and either have to walk
around, or take a walk, unless I plan
ahead and bring something to read.
(Sue Ahn 11:22pm November 1, 2009)

I always carry a book with me. Waiting time becomes enjoyable reading time.
(Mary Preston 12:56pm November 2, 2009)

I have a short attention span so I usually have at least one book and a book of Sudoku puzzles with me at all times - and my cell phone, of course!
(Karin Tillotson 8:53am November 2, 2009)

Always carry a book with me!! And water. I don't know how people can just sit with nothing to do but stare at the walls, maybe they are thinking of everything they could be doing???
(JoAnn White 9:01am November 2, 2009)

Just like most people here, I always have a book with me to carry me through any waiting times. Usually a books of stories that I can read one per waiting time and be able to leave it in my purse and not have to keep taking it out.
(Patricia Reed 9:34am November 2, 2009)

I try to keep a book in my car and also my carry bag of junk to work to be prepared to wait.
(Vikki Parman 10:38am November 2, 2009)

I am NEVER without a book in my bag! I am a HUGE fan of reading, esp historical romances. I read at least a book a week! Reading is my favorite escape!
(Stefanie Finn 10:41am November 2, 2009)

I ALWAYS take the book that I
am currently reading and a
spare. I also keep some light
romance books in my car in
case someone else needs
something to read. After 3
kids who took dance,guitar,
piano, & swimming lessons and
played baseball, football, soccer, and have two elderly
parents that I take to doctors
offices, I probably read 2 to
3 books a week just at these
places. I also carry a pair of
ear plugs so that the overly
loud TVs and people at
dealerships and doctor's
offices don't interfere with
my reading. When I worked I
kept a book at my desk to read
at lunch too. Sometimes I
would have three different
books that I was reading at
the same time.
(Lisa Richards 11:36am November 2, 2009)

I take a book EVERYWHERE! You never know when you're going to have to wait.
(Kelli Jo Calvert 12:23pm November 2, 2009)

I have my kindle and my iphone in my purse at all times so I have something to keep my busy. Helps the time pass by faster!
(Anne-Kathrine Ubberud 1:36pm November 2, 2009)

I almost always have at least one book in my purse, especially if I know that I'll be somewhere that Ill have to sit and wait. A lot of the time, I'll have my laptop with me, too. Sometimes I will talk with other waiters, too, but that's rarer.

The one time in the last couple of months I didn't have anything to read was when I ended up at the ER with my father, and had to scrounge for a magazine I could stand to read. So, here's the kicker on that: I'm at the ER in a hospital, and almost ALL of the magazines there for people to read have something to do with hunting and/or guns. Come on folks, WTH??????

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 2:09pm November 2, 2009)

I have a book along in case there's time for a page or two when out on errands or waiting in the car for people to come outside.
(Alyson Widen 3:54pm November 2, 2009)

If I get stuck doing an oil change or something I always take three things with me: a book, my blackberry and a snack!
(Lisa Glidewell 4:20pm November 2, 2009)

I always carry a book around in my bag in case I'm ever in a position where I might have a lengthy wait.
(Debbie Beverley 7:00pm November 2, 2009)

Well, I'm right up there with all the rest of you. I usually have 2 and sometimes 3 books with me. I can read about 20 - 25 books a month, so that's almost one a day, and I NEVER want to get caught without something to read. My daughter has started asking for one of my books if she's with me, and my husband likes people watching (he almost always meets someone he knows in this small town).
(Donna Breitkreuz 9:37pm November 2, 2009)

I haven't left home in years without a book; I'm always waiting for someone or something so might as well make the best of it.
(Ilene Pedersen 9:59pm November 2, 2009)

Waiting, I wait for the bus,
wait on the bus, get to work
early, so wait for my shift to
start. I always have one or
two books, and with my Kindle
now, even more. I read, or
people watch, some times I
make notes for a work in
progress. :)
(Melissa Tackett 5:23am November 3, 2009)

I don't take my laptop because it's older and too big but I try to take a book or look at a magazine. Sometimes I write lists of things I need to do..
(Joy Hoormann 3:21pm November 3, 2009)

I'm going to tell my hubby how many of you bring a book or two to read when ever you have to wait for whatever! He kids me all the time. Lynn, I know how poor the reading material can be at the ER s. I try to collect my magazines to take so that there is some distraction for the people who often are stuck there for hours. Happy New Year & Happy Reading!
