Sandi Shilhanek | One Last Summer Hurrah?

If you live in the United States then this is perhaps a holiday weekend for you. It is for me, and I’ve been looking forward to it with much anticipation. Ideally I would spend the weekend lounging with a book, but I’m sure my reality is going to be much different.

I have no real plans. My youngest son might wish to compete in a local bowling tournament, but I don’t know if he wants to or not. The last time we discussed it he was rather non committal. He does have an appointment with the eye doctor, but that’s the only thing carved in stone in my appointment calendar. I would like to get my house clean, but that’s something that’s usually accomplished when I don’t have people looking over my shoulder as to what I’m dejunking, so reading sounds like a nice staycation escape..

I have a variety of books to choose from in my TBR and on my kindle. I’m not sure what I’m going to be reading this weekend. I’m debating between Red White & Dead by Laura Caldwell and Table Manners by Mia King. I’m quite hopeful that both are good choices, and who knows if I get really motivated to read and not clean maybe both could get read by the time I head to work and real life again on Tuesday?

Do you have special plans for the Labor Day weekend? Is there a special book that you’ve been saving because you know you’re going to have extra long reading time? Will you be more like me and attempt to get some long put off chore done around the house and then reward yourself with some reading time? Perhaps you’re planning one last weekend getaway...if you are where did you go or are planning on going to?

Whatever your weekend brought I hope you enjoyed it. Until the next time I wish you happy page turning.

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | One Last Summer Hurrah?

Dear Sandi: Thank you for your post.

Like you, I'm spending this long weekend cleaning up the place. No kids to take care of, but there are my cats. Plus shopping, visiting friends, blogging, and paperwork---there's ALWAYS paperwork! And trolling the classifieds and the Web, looking for a job.

But I don't intend to neglect my reading. No current books on my nightstand, but plenty of yard-sale, rummage-sale, and bargain-store books. Maybe when these lean times pass . . . .

However, my most important book is the one I'm writing. Unlike most Americans, I'll spend Labor Day laboring. But in my case, it will be over a manuscript.

Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Mary Anne Landers

I will be reading Wolf tales 6&7 By Kate Douglas this weekend the last of the set I have been readiing the set all week and catching up on my e-mail that I have fallen behind on.
[email protected]
(Stacey Smith 3:55am September 6, 2009)

I'll be reading The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews.
(Maria Munoz 8:58am September 6, 2009)

I will be reading Olive Kitteridge and Bran Hambric! Plus I will be attending our mother/daughter book club today with my 10 year old daughter.
(Julie Peterson 9:06am September 6, 2009)

I am not cleaning the house. There I said it. With the kids around, I feel like Mr. Incredible would feel with his crime fighting: "Would it hurt you to just leave the place clean for 5 minutes!." No, I do my cleaning while they've gone to school.

As far as this weekend, we had our BBQ out of the way, so hubby and I can go Salsa dancing later this weekend. I have been reading NEW MOON by Stephenie Meyer, and yes I'm a little behind because its a YA book and I thought what's the big deal. There is probably no romance. I am soooo wrong. From the first chapter of TWILIGHT, I have been in thrall, its that good. This whole saga has pulled at my heart strings. So hopefully I'll finish reading this book and jump onto another one in my TBR pile.

Have a great rest of the weekend!!

Hi Sandi--I did some cleaning yesterday in between watching college football. Today and tomorrow I will be doing some relaxing and some cooking. I am reading Reckless Love by Elizabeth Lowell and enjoying it. I hope you have a nice weekend and get some reading done.
(Mary Perry 10:50am September 6, 2009)

We celebrate Labour Day her in Canada too.. I was going to have relaxing weekend, but my Hotmail kicked my account out and now I have to start all over with a new one.. This will take the rest of the weekend to get back all my contacts in order.. What a pain...
(Kathleen O'Donnell 11:22am September 6, 2009)

I'm currently reading Red Kiss by Deidre Knight and yes I am going to be doing some house work.
(Joyce Mandle 11:26am September 6, 2009)

I'm trying to finish up The Dangerous Duke by Christine Wells. It's pretty good, but I happen to be in Kentucky right now, with plans for the day. If I can, I also look to finish up a YA I started called Night Hoops, Carl Deuker. He's pretty good at getting you inside the head of a teenage boy. I also have a couple by Nancy Werlin I'd like to work on.

YA fiction has been pretty interesting reading and a few have surprised me.

Happy Weekend Everyone!
(Carrie Hinkel-Gill 11:31am September 6, 2009)

Sandi, I did spend the weekend at the bowl and took Lisa Jackson's book Chosen to Die with me. However, between watching the bowling, chatting with people and selling our baked goodies, I never even opened it! Today I will read and maybe hit the Half Price Books sale.

I am getting the last bits of school supplies shopping done with the kids. Every year I plan to have everything done far ahead of the first day of school. Evey year I find a few items the kids missed on their lists while shopping with their father. You would think I would learn

I've been curled up with DARK LOVER by JR Ward this morning and deciding it's not a series I will probably continue....and I've puttered around in my TBR pile a little bit. Shuffled some here, moved some there, dusted some off and put some aside for the library....
It's shaping up to be a terrific weekend!!
(Cindy Ferrell 1:09pm September 6, 2009)

I have been cleaning and doing odd chores, sort of an early winterizing. I have also been grilling outside everyday since Friday. Less kitchen cleanup.
(Gigi Hicks 1:37pm September 6, 2009)

Like your thinking !!! Spending this weekend outside relaxing reading "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. Going to take advantage of this weather before the dreaded cold starts.
(Cheryl Masciarelli 1:38pm September 6, 2009)

I am doing nothing special this weekend. I'll be finishing up "Bending the Rules" by Susan Andersen. I don't know after that. Whatever I'm in the mood for. That's how I always pick my next read.
(Janet Lewis 2:08pm September 6, 2009)

We are just having a relaxing weekend enjoying being witih family!

(Ann w 5:44pm September 6, 2009)

I gardened all weekend. Up to my neck in compost & manure. Then I bathed & settled in with a book in one hand & a glass of wine in the other.
(Mary Preston 5:52pm September 6, 2009)

Sandi,
I had to work Sat and Sun, but I am off Mon. I am doing absoultly nothing on Mon. I have not had a whole day to do nothing in awhile. I am going to play it by ear and decide as I go!!
(Julie Harper 5:56pm September 6, 2009)

I manged to do some laundry, clean my boys' bathroom, get Mike to vacuum the living room, got Brian to clean his floor, buy groceries, take
Mike to lunch, and finish Red White and Dead, and Table Manners! I even snuck a nap in there on Saturday. Now I've got several reviews to
write, and the decision to make about what to read next!

Sounds like everyone has had a great weekend. Cindy, I read Dark Lover and loved it. Read the second in the series, and was like eh! Now I
can't bring myself to read the third!
(Sandi Shilhanek 6:44pm September 6, 2009)

No cleaning for me on a weekend! I'm retired & save that chore for week days. I'm reading The DaVinci Code! For some reason I just kept passing it up for several years!! It is quite interesting. Recently I read Angels & Demons which was also very good.
Holiday weekends are for staying home for me. I live in northern California in Wine Country, we are over run with tourists on long weekends, any weekend! Fall is the best because the tourist traffic is down. I love being a tourist also but I take my common sense and good manners with me. Enough said!
I hope you are all finding time to read & enjoying whatever you do.
(Donna McClure 6:55pm September 6, 2009)

I have been reading all weekend. I also got to visit with Jessica Andersen at a Borders in CT. It was a lot of fun. I finished reading book three, Skykeepers, of her Keepers of the Final Prophecy series. It was phenomenal. I have more reading in store, finishing The Bleeding Dusk by Colleen Gleason, starting a couple of Blazes and reading the summer reading we teachers have to get done before orientation begins on Tuesday. So, as you can see Sandi, I will be doing lots of reading.

Have a wonderful Labour Day everyone!

Peace and love,
Paula R.
(Paula Robinson 8:24pm September 6, 2009)

We have been traveling and forgot it was Labor Day Weekend - UNTIL we tried to use those motel coupons we got at the rest area. NOT good on holiday weekends!
(Karin Tillotson 10:04pm September 6, 2009)

It's Labour Day in Canada (our official spelling) and I did nothing special, and hadn't planned. But it was moving day at the university dorms, especially for over 5000 first-year students, not far from where I live.
(Sigrun Schulz 11:05pm September 6, 2009)

Well my family usually go out for a family dinner on Labour Day as its the day before school starts for the kid. Tomorrow I'm planning to do some more back to school shopping with my sister.
(Jenny Ng 11:50pm September 6, 2009)

Labor Day is a funny name for a day where goofing off is key. However much I want, cleaning will always be there and books have a nightly rendevous with me.
(Alyson Widen 12:44pm September 7, 2009)

I wish we could have gone camping. That is what we would normally do. But my hubby and I are helping a daughter/family to move. Needless to say, my back is killing me tonight. I'll still read a couple chapters before turning off the lights. Just started Sweet Seduction by Maya Banks.
(Mitzi Hinkey 1:09am September 7, 2009)

Hi Sandi - followed your post from DC's Accidental yahoo group. So, hmmm, today has been good. I didn't answer the door or the phone because I was in the "gitter done" mode. Rearranged furniture in three bedrooms, cleaned out two closets, moved two bookcases to my bedroom and have totally filled both with all things Paranormal, cleaned my art room (that's a bigger chore than all the other put together), joined Michelle Bardsley's Minions, got my butt whopped constantly in Pirates cause I was busy doing other stuff, getting ready to take my bath and relax in the spa with a book - Angie Fox's Accidental Demon Slayer.

Gina Growe in Sprinfield, IL where it is 1:15am and three of my four shepherds is sleeping...the other one is being a twit and running up and down the stairs.

My Mom is having surgery Oct. 5th for Breast Cancer. She was 1600 e-mails behind and she didn't know how to organize them into folders, so I am doing it for her. She and my dad are traveling home from MO right now. Two wks ago My Aunt was told she had cancer, colon and maybe liver, so they jumped in the car and drove 1500 miles to help her with some decisions and legal stuff. Dad's 71 and Mom's 68. My oldest niece and I are giving their house a deep cleaning. They should be back Monday or Tuesday. On this Labor Day we are giving a Labor of Love to Mom/Mammaw.
(Jean Merriott 2:52am September 7, 2009)

OOPS. On Mom's computer and we both are registered with you and Jean Merriott's post is actually mine. I'm Daughter laboring and she's the best mom to reap the benefits.
Sorry for the mix-up!
Jill
(Jill Merriott 3:01am September 7, 2009)

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend.
I'm giong to try in catch up on my reading.
(Jeanette Bowman 11:50am September 7, 2009)

Have spent the weekend feeling very sorry for myself as my dh and I have fallen ill with the flu :( I was even too sick to bother reading!!
(Ilona Fenton 1:58pm September 7, 2009)

It's been a rain free weekend so we went for a walk and did some window shopping. I think I'll go watch some tennis on tv. Happy Labor Day.
(Jane Cheung 3:07pm September 7, 2009)

While I was writing my little bit yesterday, I had just woken up. I confused yesterday with today, but what I said still pertains to today. We're supposed to have thunderstorms, but so far we've had none.
(Sigrun Schulz 4:45pm September 7, 2009)

I hope you've enjoyed your Labor Day, Sandi! Our day has been very low-key. Went to the grocery before they closed early and am grilled out for dinner. Sadly, I have to pick out something to wear to work tomorrow. At least it's a short week, right?
(Laurie Damron 5:34pm September 7, 2009)

Sandi--
Normally, I don't have a life but, this weekend I was really busy. Saturday evening I was at a local event where a non-profit organization, which I'm on the task force for, had a booth. We provide free non-perishable food, clothing and rent/utility money to needy people in our area. True to late summer weather in Florida, it was so hot and humid that you could hardly breathe. Although my job was to bring an oscillating fan, you couldn't tell it was there unless you were standing directly in front of it! Then yesterday, I went to a friend's house for a pool party. Most of the time, some people stay inside while others go outside. Not yesterday! Oh no, everyone went outside and, rather than appear to be a party-pooper, I went outside too and sat in the Florida heat again. When I got home, the pool party in my condo association was still going on and I tried to join them but only lasted 15 minutes until the heat got me. So today, Labor Day, I've spent inside, much to my dog's regret, either sleeping or watching TV! That was my holiday weekend and I'm glad that I was this busy!
(Trudy Miner 5:55pm September 7, 2009)

No special plans for the long weekend. Just another weekend for me. Lots of special books I've been wanting to get to but I'm so far behind on my reading!. I just can't catch up.
(Debbie Beverley 7:33pm September 7, 2009)

I have not read anything but the newspaper this weekend. I have been getting ready for a craft fair I'm in, in November. So I just have been working and working :o)
(Lynn McCrea 9:12pm September 7, 2009)

I'll be working in the yard. There is so
much I haven't had time to do. Have
started The Strangely Beautiful Tale of
Miss Percy Parker and am loving it.
(Patricia Barraclough 1:54am September 8, 2009)

Cool topic -- again -- Sandi. Thanks!

I didn't exactly plan anything for the week-end, but it ended up busy anyhow. On Fri. my daughter-in-law's father passed away, so I had their kids all day and most of the evening. Saturday I went to my grandson's very first ever home game football game. They lost, but it was still a good game, and he got his name mentioned a few times. Once he intercepted a pass, and once he tackled someone and stopped them from making a touch-down. Sunday was kind of ho-hum. Went to church in the morning -- oh, I forgot. We had a pancake breakfast at church for the fall kick-off. Had a nap in the afternoon, and watched a movie with my husband in the evening. Today I had two loads of laundry washed, dried, folded and put away plus the dishwasher loaded and we went for a 2 km walk -- all before we left for Regina at 10 a.m. Had a family BBQ to attend there, and got home about 8:30 this evening.

I also read His Baby Bombshell by Jessica Matthews and Twice in a Lifetime by Marta Perry, and I'm half done A Silent Fury by Lynette Eason.

For someone who had no plans at the start of the week-end, I did pretty good, eh?
(Donna Breitkreuz 2:17am September 8, 2009)

Hi Lynn, what kind of crafts do you make? I make just about anything except flower arrangements and glass stuff. . .
(Donna Breitkreuz 2:20am September 8, 2009)

Does reading a cookbook count? I read the new Debbie Macomber cookbook...I loved all the stories. What we did for the weekend? We were in northern Wisconsin up my parent's lake home. We also went 4-wheeling, we put on 50 miles. We love it!
(Margaret Dombrowski 12:39pm September 9, 2009)

Well, I had nothing planned last weekend, and ended up busy. Saturday was mostly housework and the food store, while David was working. Sunday we went to a Labor Day picnic and ended up leaving both girls there overnight (yeah). Sunday my gf, and her dd, came over to do wash (long story). So they were here most of the day. Then we popped in across the street (they were having a LD party, then ran up to the mall. Then it was get the girls in bed and ready myself for the week - ugh. And for a short week, it hasn't moved quick enough!

Good Labor Day subject Sandi! Sorry I popped in late though. Sounds like everyone had a good weekend:)
