Sandi Shilhanek | Is It JUST About The Decorations?

Wednesday night the DFWTeaReaders met at my house for our annual Halloween dinner.

I know that I’ve blogged about the group and the fun we’ve had before, but I thought it was time to do it again.

The dish (and I just don’t mean the edible kind) is almost always delicious, and I use that qualifier because as my friends know I’m far from a cook, so I question when I host the dinner whether or not the food is good, but I think that this was the third year of my hosting and cooking and I’ve yet to kill anyone.

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.
While I’ve yet to scare any one off with my culinary skills my husband does his best to scare people with his decorations. This year he had to scale back, because as hard and fast as he was decorating our puppy, Travis decided things needed to be undecorated. Unfortunately, a few items were lost, but fortunately nothing of a real monetary value.

This year we didn’t have a phone in author and one of our members did try her best to get us to discuss books, but it seemed to me at least that every time she opened her mouth to say something about a book, we in the way that I like to think is unique to our group had to interrupt with a random thought that while the one speaking might have thought was about the book, was really something of a double entendre and led to gales of laughter.

When the members of the group had left and I had managed to load the dishwasher with the first load of dishes, and my older dog, Sally had been properly medicated for the night I laid down thinking I could gloat over the success of my new Halloween plates, my husband had other ideas…how did the book club go he wanted to know. I just laid there silent. His response…if the laughter was any indication a good time was had by all.

That’s what I think…if the members left with laughter on their brains and no aches in their tummies (well maybe from over eating the desserts but not caused by my cooking) then a good time was had by all, and my husband and I can move on to planning next year’s bash.

So you see what happens when we all get together. Do you have friends you can "dish" with not necessarily about books, but about anything and everything. Have a fun story about what happens when you get together that you're willing to share? If the answer is no or you prefer to keep it a secret tell us do you decorate for Halloween? If so do you put the same things out year after year, or are you like my husband who has to do a new theme each year?

Until next week happy page turning. Sandi ShilhanekSandi Shilhanek

Sandi, we had a great time as usual. LOVE LOVE the new plates, you manage to pull it ALL together with aplomb and style.

And the gales of laughter meant we had a terrific time! It's always great to meet together even if we go off tangent.

Can't wait for next year, and let me say, even your toned down decorations put the rest of us to shame!

I wasn't expecting to be the first to
comment. I think everyone is busy
decorating their houses for Halloween
since it is a week away. We don't
decorate so I have lots of time to
spend here.
(Sue Ahn 11:08pm October 24)

We always put up a few halloween decorations, mostly pumpkins and fun stuff. We're no too into the rally scary stuff. We always look forward to seeing all the kids in their costumes. That's the really fun part.
(Carol Woodruff 11:58pm October 24)

I don't decorate as much as I used to due to time. I don't mind using the same old decorations.
(Jane Cheung 4:49am October 25)

Wish I were part of your group, Sandi! It just sounds delightful, and I would love to have been there.
(Louise Pledge 6:37am October 25)

Any time that a group can get together and just have a good time, what does it matter if you end up talking about a book or anything else? When my mother, my sister & I get together, we talk about books, and everything else in life that is happening. We so change from one subject to the next and have such a great time.
(Joanne Reynolds 7:41am October 25)

We don't do Halloween here in France. I love group gathering though. I plan to pick one particular theme and have one myself, sounds really funny ;-).
(Emmanuelle Jappont 8:01am October 25)

We live in a retirement area & don't get to see the children in costumes.
(Pat Wilson 8:50am October 25)

I'm not a decorator at all so my house is plain jane around the holidays. I do enjoy seeing how other people decorate and amazed at how much effort they put into it. I get tired just looking at them! :)
(Michelle K 9:28am October 25)

I love Halloween, but I've
always had more fun getting my
girls the perfect costumes and
taking them out trick or
treating than decorating.
(Margay Roberge 10:00am October 25)

Wow what a great Halloween dinner I never been to one like that. I love the plates! People around here just don't do it. I have some fun here with my teenage girls every year.
Thanks for sharing,
Penney

Halloween is my favorite holiday. i go all out every year. I start decorating the beginning of October. I hang up my witches and skeletons first and then I do the windows. We have a big party on halloween night and the girls friendss come over and we make popcorn balls and cany apples and sit around and watch old Vincent Price and other old classsic movies. Then the next day its time to take everything away till next year, sigh. But I can shop all the after halloween sales and buy lots of stuff for the next year.
(Peggy Bragg 11:15am October 25)

It sounds like lots of fun. We used to gather like that before our kids were born - now it's hard to find a convenient date with all their activities!
(Lisa Freeman 11:24am October 25)

Sounds like a truly ghoulish time. Very nice. :-)

This is a special time of year for the children.
(Victoria Churbuck 11:36am October 25)

Sandi, I am sure your cooking and decorative plates were beautiful and everyone had a good time. When people get together, you can never stick to a schedule -- it's like a free for all! Unfortunately, all my friends live far away, so we never get together; I sure miss that! Seems like I had so many friends from grammar and high school, and no one is around! I love to decorate since I have four grandchildren. I do try and buy new things each year; little knicknacks I can put around or hang up. I did buy a larger tree this year as I realize the grandkids didn't seem to care for the small one I had last year with all the little decorations for their age group! Sure -- they have a huge tree in their own homes! I did buy a few ornaments this year, and have to buy quite a few more. Around here, decorations sell out so very fast, so I couldn't get much for autumn and halloween; just a few. Guess I will try and have better luck next time around!
(Peg Fragale 12:02pm October 25)

My sister and another set of sisters, who we've known since we were pre-school age get together for dinner at least four times a year. It's an opportunity for us to catch up with what is going on in our lives and with our families. We still laugh just as hard about the stupid things we did when we were kids as when we did them. (Peeing in one's go-go boots and losing a falsie in the swimming pool never ceases to be funny). I hope everyone has close friends to grow old with.
(Jill Hayden 12:08pm October 25)

Last time I got together with my friends it was for a birthday and we had a frosting and whipped cream fight! It was fun! I had lots of ideas for decorations for Halloween but I just haven't found the time!
(Tamara Shurling 12:25pm October 25)

Looks like you had a great party Sandi! Wish I lived closer so I could've joined you.

So, with kids, you would think I'd decorate more. i always mean too. But with work, the girls school and activities, it doesn't always happen. I also have limited room to put out and store anything. But I have a few friends who go all out and we always enjoy going to their places.

I don't have any group of friends I get together with often. I have plenty I see (when schedules permit). Usually the group get-togethers are of the "party" variety - i.e. Home Interiors, Simply Tasteful and any and all of the "adult toy" companies out their. Those are usually the best ones. Laughter always reigns!

Tamara, we have friends that have holiday parties, and on a number of occasions, the whip cream fights have been the hightlight of the evening:)

Thanks for the pics Sandi - loved them!
(Amanda Reeder-erdly 12:44pm October 25)

Sounds like y'all had a great time. :)

I don't decorate for Halloween. There's no point in it, since we never get anymore than two doorbell rings that night.
(Janet Lewis 12:50pm October 25)

When my sisters and I get together we have a ball! I put out the same decorations for Halloween every year! I don't decorate a lot but I did when my son was small.
(Gail Hurt 12:57pm October 25)

I love to decorate for Halloween and I save and my decorations and use them year after year. My 22 year old son mentioned the stacked pumpkin candles on my fireplace had been around as long as him. And he's right about that.
(Ellie Wright 1:35pm October 25)

We're going all out this year and decorating plus having a party with people of all ages. I'm going as a biker babe; I couldn't figure out how to go as a "cougar" lol...besides a biker can be pudgy.
(Ilene Pedersen 1:44pm October 25)

In our late 50's, my sister and I dressed up in costumes of M&M's...I was the blue one. My yorkie was costumed as an angel. We trick or treated in the senior complex where Mom lived and handed out treats. It was one of the best Halloween's ever.
(Nancy Bristow 3:01pm October 25)

Wow! Ya'll had some great decorations going on there!! Sounds like everyone had a rocking good time..
(Martha Lawson 4:06pm October 25)

I used to decorate a lot when the kids were smaller. We now live a long way from the grandkids (2 states) and it's just worth the effort to me. Hubby decorates the front porch. We used to go all out and do the yard, house and all. I miss those days.
(Saundra McKenzie 4:16pm October 25)

I have a group of four friends who are also writers, who I cannot get along without. Though we live 60 miles apart from each other, we try to get together at least once a month to laugh, gossip - and even talk about writing once in a while.
(Vicky Burkholder 4:57pm October 25)

I don't do as much as I used to when my children were small, but I still put out a pumpkin and dress in pink sweats, wear rabbit ears and pin a cotton tail to my rear end. The funnest part for me is watching the small children smile when I had them their candy!!!
(Mitzi Hinkey 5:09pm October 25)

Now that I live in a very small apartment with no outside area that is mine I don't do much decorating. I do have my little witch out that blinks green when turned on & a few other "fall" type items. I used to love decorating but since I'm the only one that sees it I don't put forth much effort now!

My favorite Halloween memory is when a friend of mine & I were 21, 22 very young, we went Trick or Treating with glasses in hand for drinks! It was a blast & the reactions were so fun. When we get together that often comes up & we still smile & laugh about all the fun we had back then. We still have fun now when we see each other. We have been friends for almost 50 years.
(Donna McClure 5:22pm October 25)

I live int the woods and no one sees much of my house, so I don't decorate any more. When my children were little, we decorated A LOT. Yard too.

What a fun bunch of people you are!! I love when people enjoy each others company and have something in common. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I love to decorate and get into the festivities. Happy Halloween !!
(Armenia Fox 5:45pm October 25)

I have a great friend & when we catch up we tend to vent. We both have a rant & rave about what ails us - usually the fools of the world - & then we move on having gotten rid of all the negative energy surrounding us. It's cathartic & highly recommended.
(Mary Preston 6:33pm October 25)

Love your decorations, Sandi! I have a few things that I put out for Halloween and fall, but not as much as I used to when my girls were young.
(Laurie Damron 7:21pm October 25)

I'm so busy lately I have very little time to spend with friends :( I do, however, decorate for Halloween. Since we use hay, corn stalks, pumpking etc we have to get fresh every year. It's one of the great benefits of living in a farming community - free decorations!
(Mary Lynn Hayes 8:18pm October 25)

I do the same thing every year. The decorations go up about 2 hours before the kids go out trick or treating and come down around 11:00 pm the same night. I look forward to seeing all the costumes though!
(DeeAnn Szymanski 8:22pm October 25)

I so wish that I had such a gathering of friends. Unfortunately, I've grown apart from my friends or they have moved out of town. I miss those kinds of things. I would love to decorate the whole house for Halloween, but time and money prevent that.
(Deidre Durance 8:35pm October 25)

I enjoy Halloween. I think that we all want to be scared a little by the ghostly tales and the spooky decorations. It sounds like your party was loads of fun. Wish I was there.
(Rosemary Krejsa 9:16pm October 25)

I'm a children's librarian, so I get to
decorate my space there every year.
We have a new room this year and my
husband strung wire so I could hang
things from near the ceiling. I used to
decorate the house a lot, but we are
out in the country now, plus we have
the house torn apart for renovations.
At least I get to use all my cool stuff at
work. The staff all dresses up for
Halloween and we do Trick or Treat for
books.
(Patricia Barraclough 9:46pm October 25)

I have several friends that I treasure and our conversations would sound totally nuts to anyone else because we constantly go off on tangents and start going in entirely different directions with every sentence. We end up laughing at just about everything but we are refreshed when we are done. Sadly, we don't get together often enough but I am reminded by your description of the pre-Halloween get-together that we should make more of an effort to do so.
(E Felder 11:25pm October 25)

Wow the decor is awesome. I wish I had the money to decorate like that. I seldom manage to decorate due to lack of funds.
(Crystal Weems 6:59am October 26)

I have an electric pumpkin that my mother bought for me while I was in college; it's about 45 years old now and still works well. I also have this huge cardboard pumpkin that hangs on my door which I've had for about 18 years. That's about it unless you count my pumpkin tablecloth which stays on the table until after Thanksgiving. I don't live in an area where there are many children and seldom have Trick-or-Treaters plus, my grandchildren live in another state 1000 miles away so Halloween doesn't mean much to me anymore.
(Trudy Miner 1:45pm October 26)

We don't decorate for Halloween, but we go all out for Christmas.
(Donna Breitkreuz 2:20pm October 26)

Oops, I forgot to add. All I got of your decorations picture is a big black square. . .
(Donna Breitkreuz 2:21pm October 26)

We used to go all out when are kids were still at home. Now we decorate like crazy for Christmas when all the kids come home!
(Lisa Glidewell 10:56pm October 26)

I did not decorate this year, because I am rarely home long enough to do or enjoy. I love seeing houses with creative ideas. I have a pal who has an amzing collection of pumkins....all sizes, shapes and materials. The house is filled, top to bottom with her collection. The eleagant ones and the blinking talking pumkins thay are all out in full force. It takes her a day to arrange in every room in the house. She goes all out. We kid her that there must be a support group some where for people that can not stop buying pumpkins.
(Barbara Ryan 11:39pm October 26)

Sandi, wish I lived near you -- your group sounds so much fun!
(Pam Nolan 9:36pm October 27)

Halloween is awesome! I decorate every year! I use my kids as an excuse to go all out! I don't know how I will explain it once they are grown, lol! Aside from the decorations, we make lots of homemade pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread with homemade whipped cream! Yummy! Oh, and don't forget the pumpkin seeds!! Gotta love those!
