Sara Reyes | 5 Reasons to Get Out Of Town

Peaches and I enjoying a cup of coffee

One thing I learned at South By Southwest (SXSW) is to occasionally have blog posts with a number in the title. So, being I finally got home after an event-filled eight days, yes, I counted them, and thought, why there is my blog title! Woo Hoo! I originally wanted "Dead To Me" but thought definitely too negative. I'd really rather concentrate on the positive this morning. So here goes: Five Reasons to Get Out of Town.

  • 1. Anticipation is to be savored
It's exciting to anticipate the journey. Sometimes the thought of leaving is so thrilling and adrenaline pumping it makes or breaks the entire trip. Be wise and temper the enthusiasm if you're emotional, otherwise let 'er rip!
  • 2. Make New Friends
Don't be afraid to talk to strangers. If you need to give yourself an out, take a page out of Gwen's playbook and "be the hostess" the one who performs the introductions, makes sure no one is standing alone, put out your hand, shake and introduce yourself. Ask about the other person. It works, trust me!
  • 3. Be Flexible
Rigid is not a good thing. So if the panel is full, or you meet someone who wants to keep talking, let it flow! If your companions insist on going to a restaurant you don't like, be gracious. New experiences will lead to unanticipated results. Sometimes just trusting fate works out very well. You never know who you'll meet at that restaurant you can't stand and if you'd thrown a fit, it would never have occurred! How tragic!
  • 4. Expect the Unexpected
Know that something not just good but great is going to happen! Every SINGLE day! Go at it from the minute you leave the door of your room to getting on the elevator to the last minute of a long night that something wonderful is happening and you're living the experience. If you combine expectation with being flexible you will have a series of "perfect" days. Think of Ferris Bueller. Even though his day had ups and downs it was a "perfect" day. It really works!
  • 5. Review Your Experiences
Take the time to internally review every thing that occurred or you learned. Do follow up immediately, send a thank you email while it's fresh, write up your thoughts in a note book or your computer, where ever it's practical for you. If you can, talk about the trip with others. The writing and speaking help solidify your experience.

Home is a sweet place to be
After all the traveling, snafus, strange coffees and stranger beds, it's always good to come home to where your pets and family love you, you know how to work the shower (or bath for those who are addicted to bathing) and you don't have to worry about running out of anything! Being greeted at the door by an excited canine is always gratifying. The dogs are usually more demonstrative than the husband, but hey, you get it where you can! And waking up to a your own coffee is heavenly for this coffee addict!

So, I'm home and back to work after a night's sleep on my own bed with its wonderful sheets and a dog sprawled across my legs. Bliss!

Re: Sara Reyes | 5 Reasons to Get Out Of Town

Great post! There is nothing like being home and sleeping in your own bed! I never sleep well when I am away form home. I miss my bed to much!
(Gail Hurt 1:29pm March 20, 2010)

I know what you mean. Trips are
fun, but it does feel nice to
come home to your own bed - and
the four-legged pals that like
to share it with you!
(Margay Roberge 1:52pm March 20, 2010)

Great post! I know what you mean about. My husband and I find ourselves getting up one morning and just setting the car in a direction. We get to see new places and meet wonderful people but...after all is said and done there is no place like home.
(Cindy Olp 2:36pm March 20, 2010)

I surely do miss the days when I could travel and meet interesting people at seminars, conventions, etc. I have found that your life can change in the blink of an eye, so get out and do things now -- don't think about it, just do it.

As usual, greatly enjoyed your post Sara. Thanks for sharing.

We got home last Sunday night and I am still unpacking, doing laundry, and putting things away. Could we find a magic button that would do this for us?
(Karin Tillotson 3:31pm March 20, 2010)

Welcome back. I hope I'll be able to get out of town this summer.
(Jane Cheung 3:45pm March 20, 2010)

Travel is fun. The joy of new people and experience and when our time comes to go home the anticipation of being with family and friends. You get the best of both worlds.
(Rosemary Krejsa 4:07pm March 20, 2010)

As much fun as traveling is and sharing the stories of your trip, it is always great to go home. Thanks for the contest. I love a surprise pkg. of books.
(Joanne Vitale 4:10pm March 20, 2010)

I love to go places! BUT, I like coming home just as much..
(Martha Lawson 4:10pm March 20, 2010)

I love to travel, too. Seeing and doing new things - it's great! Even if it's just driving around a new city to see what's going on - love it! But I do agree with the others - finally coming home is nice, too!
(Julie Reuter 4:49pm March 20, 2010)

Boy did you hit the nail on the head with this. I love the anticipation of knowing I am going somewhere and all but then the coming home is always a blessing too. Bella, my 4 legged child, seeing me for the first time after I come home is the best. She gets so excited and it makes me feel loved even if only by my dog.
(Vicki Hancock 5:26pm March 20, 2010)

But it's great to be home again.
(Deb Pelletier 5:38pm March 20, 2010)

I want to win something
(Catherine Myers 5:55pm March 20, 2010)

I enjoyed your 5 reasons. I do like to get out & about & see the world but it is always go great to get back home again.
(Mary Preston 7:01pm March 20, 2010)

Sounds like great advice to make the most out of an event and I totally understand the comfort of coming back home after such events. There's so much fun in going somewhere but the coming home part is also such a wonderful treat to look forward to when you're away.
(Anna Hoque 7:44pm March 20, 2010)

I couldn't agree more with your post. Have travelled and loved it. Some moments are uncomfortable but the experience in its entirety has always been positive. But in the end it is great to come home and put up my feet.
(G. Bisbjerg 8:06pm March 20, 2010)

After, I get back home to my bed,
the first thing both me and my
husband will say is "I love MY
bed".
(Lisa Richards 9:13pm March 20, 2010)

Your suggestions are great and since hubby and I are going on two trips in the next two weeks, I will give them a try. I chuckled when you set the dog greets you more than hubby. Our big yellow Lab surely does just that. You have to brace yourself or he just might knock you over. Talk about a welcoming!!!
(Gladys Paradowski 9:32pm March 20, 2010)

I love to go...(hubby is always thinking of another place to explore)...but I love love coming home. I think the best thing about travel is that it makes us realize how much we appreciate what we have.
(Mitzi Hinkey 9:32pm March 20, 2010)

I prefer the coming home to the going away!
(Michelle K 10:05pm March 20, 2010)

It's true that after all that traveling, it is good to be home. I travel about every three years or so. At the beginning of the trip, it is so exciting to see new places and meet the natives of the country and experience their food and culture.

Just toward the middle of the trip, I often miss home and all the different foods like Mexican, Italian, Chinese, and so on and so forth. Where can I ordered different type of food except at home.

Traveling is great but home is where I will always belong and come home to.
(Kai Wong 10:06pm March 20, 2010)

"Home sweet home!" Traveling reinforces
the truth of those words, that's for sure!
(Jung Ja Ahn 11:17pm March 20, 2010)

I like your 5 reasons for getting out of town. But I hear the *Big Sigh* once my head hits my own pillow in my own bed. Its always nice to come home.
(Armenia Fox 11:43pm March 20, 2010)

So, I'm curious - just whom DID you run into at that restaurant you couldn't stand, but were gracious and went to anyway?

And, yes, I also agree with everyone else. Travel is great, but coming back where you belong is the best part of the trip!

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 11:44pm March 20, 2010)

I've always loved traveling and getting out as much as possible. If I'm out with others, I'm able to fit in with the choice of eatery--except for one, which for 2 different reasons left me with a definite aversion, but only if I'm asked. Since I'm always on the quiet side, I search out anyone else that is a little on the fringes. I've met nice people and had some interesting conversations that I'd have missed otherwise--often with people who are from foreign shores. I've lurked on the sidelines too long in my life. And yes, I'm usually happy to get to my home--even empty of both pet and husband.
(Sigrun Schulz 12:42pm March 21, 2010)

I so agree about needing to get out of
town. I had a business trip in Detroit
this week and just took a day off to go
visit an old college friend of mine that
lived nearby. I was so good to forget
about teenagers and all the stress at
home. It was so relaxing!!!
(Molly Wilsbacher 12:36pm March 21, 2010)

Scenery changes almost always get my hopes up and tend to not disappoint. Travel seems exotic when you hardly ever go out of town for more than an hour's drive. I love checking new locales with grat food and natural habitats.
(Alyson Widen 1:58pm March 21, 2010)

Vacations are nice but it always great to get back home and to share the trip with friends and family.
(Pat Lieberman 4:27pm March 21, 2010)

I would so love to be able to get out of town!
(Brenda Rupp 10:50pm March 21, 2010)

Reason #6 - If you're having a bad hair day, there is NOBODY around to remind you of it later (except for whomever you took with you...LOL)
(Donna Holmberg 11:52pm March 21, 2010)

I love to travel, whether it is to an
event or just to tour. The planning is
exciting, finding out what is available
where we plan on going. Even better
some times is the unexpected
treasures you find along the way. We
always savor the people we meet and
the things we see. After carefully
planning a trip, we have been known
to take an exit, turn right and see what
we find. Flexibility is our motto.
And yes, it is always nice to get home.
