Sara Reyes | Giving Thanks...

I'd like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all our US readers. It's one of the national holidays much loved in our home. And as in many homes, I imagine it follows a set tradition. I must admit I never had the problem of deciding which family to go to for Thanksgiving as neither my husband's or my family were options for the holidays and so we decided with our very first married Thanksgiving to do it "our" way. It's evolved over the years as our children aged to delightful adults until it's a very comfortable day, full of our little traditions. In other words, I get to supervise now and they do most of the heavy lifting and cooking, although I still get up at dawn to supervise the muffins being made and the turkey stuffed into the roasting pan.

Then we settle down with coffee / tea and warm muffins to enjoy the Macy parade on television. I discovered the parade when I was in college and it's been one of my favorites over the years. My children are accustomed to watching the elaborate balloons and the marching bands while the house fills up with the smells of baking and roasting. Since the advent of video recorders and DVRs it's been possible to take pauses for cooking and still enjoy the festivities around the nation. We also invite friends who may not be able to go home to help celebrate with us. Of course, in our house, everyone has to help cook, even if you don't know "how" there is some type of prep or clean-up that can be performed. Plus we send them home with a big bag of leftovers!

When we have our meal it's knowing that everyone in the house helped prepare it and great pride is taken in the presentation of each dish. Even if the dish doesn't look exactly as advertised, it's knowing that the "chef" tried their very best. And sometimes a meal, like life, is just that, showing we do our very best.

This year I'm very thankful for my family and friends. I'm very fortunate as I have many many friends, near and far, so although the year has been tough financially it's been rich in friends which is much more important than anything else. So, here's a toast to you, may you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, enjoy the food, friends, and all the new books you can get your hands on...

Sara Reyes Until next time...

I too, remember past Thanksgivings with family and friends, and look forward to spending this day with my family. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
(Linda Riffe 12:33pm November 26, 2009)

This year, it's just my father and me, going out somewhere (I still don't know where!). Normally, we spend it with friends, but they went away for this one to celebrate a house finally being finished.

I'm thankful he's still alive and fairly independent, although there are signs of impending loss. I'm thankful for my friends who let me dump on their shoulders when things aren't going so well, and who then celebrate with me when things go great.

I'm thankful for all the people I've met in book groups online, and look forward to the chance of meeting them in person next year at conferences like RT.

I'm thankful for all the books I have yet to read, and for all of those I have read.

I'm thankful for my music (I'm a professional musician), for without it, I literally would have died years ago. I'm thankful for my ability to take wonderful pictures of my friends that give me the chance to express just how much they mean to me.

I guess that I'm just thankful, period.

Later,

Lynn

I'm so thankful to have so many wonderful family members that I actually do have to decide whom to join for the holiday celebrations.
As a military brat, my family is spread around the country, and even into Canada. For the last 20+ years my siblings have all lived hundreds and thousands of hours away from me, but recently a miracla has happened... they're all moving back. My older sister just moved from Texas to Delaware - where I and my parents live - and bought a house (so I know she's staying). My older brother is selling his house in Colorado and moving here before the end of the year. My younger sister's husband is retiring from the Air Force and moving to within 2.5 hours from here...LIFE IS GOOD!
As for what else I'm thankful for, I'm thankful that my Dad's newly diagnosed Prostate Cancer is only Stage 2 and his survival prognosis is excellent. I'm thankful that my son is graduating from college this year and is moving along to grad school (I'm so proud of him). I'm thankful that my daughter, who graduates high school this year, has picked such a noble career as nursing as her plan for her future. I'm thankful that I have a job (even though they keep cutting my pay), because my husband will be out of a job on 1/22/2010 because the company he has been working with for 20 years now is shutting down for good. I'm thankful that my husband is a wonderful, dedicated man who will work any job it takes to help our family survive.
I'm thankful that I have such wonderful book as yours to use to temporarily remove my stress from life by immersing myself into other worlds within those pages - it's the best stress relief activity in the world.

(Jane Cheung 2:59pm November 26, 2009)

Sara,
I'm so very thankful for my family, friends, and associates in book groups, reviewing, etc. My life underwent a drastic change 3 years ago, and without the above mentioned, I would not have had the strength to keep on keepin' on!

It's a beautiful day today here in the Hill Country of Texas. We are awaiting the turkey dinner and the Cowboys football game. Wow! Life is good.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day with friends and family and lots of good food!
(Betty Cox 3:13pm November 26, 2009)

We're giving the turkey thing a whirl at out house today. It's a bit late, but he's in the oven now, and
we'll hopefully have turkey for halftime! We did go earlier and celebrate with my boss and her family.

I am thankful for my family and friends, and that when I post my weekly blog you all respond!
(Sandi Shilhanek 3:56pm November 26, 2009)

Even though its just the two of us (my husband and myself), I am thankful for the family holiday and good food. I enjoy his company so much that I hardly miss the big family celebrations that were a part of growing up.
(Susan Driskill 4:36pm November 26, 2009)

I am thankful that my parents are well and healthy. I am home, now, after spending an enjoyable day with them. There were lots of laughter in the house today.

Happy Thanksgiving to all posters and staffers of Fresh Fiction.
(Tracey Dent 5:51pm November 26, 2009)

Thank you for your post, Sara.

I'm grateful that I once had a family. My loved ones have gone to their rewards, but allow me to express my thanks to the three to whom I owe so much: my mother, Mary Lucille McCarley Landers; my maternal grandfather, Cecil McCarley; and my maternal grandmother, Lena Smith McCarley.

I'm grateful that I live in a country that grants its citizens so many freedoms and so much opportunity---and, at its best, stands for so many noble principles.

I'm grateful for my three furry children, aka cats, who live with me in my home: Spartacus, Lucretia, and Archimedes. I'm grateful for the eight who live in my heart.

I'm grateful that I'm still alive and healthy. Quite a feat considering all I've been through.

I'm grateful that my employment situation is starting to look better. I'm even more grateful that the whole economy of my country and others is turning around for the the better.

I've grateful that I can read, write, and connect with all sorts of interesting people and groups on the Internet.

And of course, I'm grateful for Fresh Fiction and its staff. As always, keep up the good work!
(Mary Anne Landers 6:40pm November 26, 2009)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful
Thanksgiving. we have spent the day
working. Our house is torn up due to
a friends (we have half her stuff piled
in our house) move, our oldest
daughter is living in a camper while
they (her dad and brother) remodel
their house and our other daughter's
house is too small to do dinner for
everyone. I'm hoping I'll have things
squared away by this weekend so we
can try to have dinner on Sunday. It
has been the least holiday like
Thanksgiving we have ever spent. My
husband and son went to NC to work
on our daughter's house and I have
spent the day sorting through my
friends stuff boxing it for different
charities.
(Patricia Barraclough 6:52pm November 26, 2009)

I'm very grateful for the men
and women who sacrifice so
much all year long to protect
our rights and freedom. I'm
also grateful for my family
who are always there when I
need them most and for every
high and low point in between.
(Margay Roberge 7:56pm November 26, 2009)

I'm grateful my family members are safe and healthy, and that my Mother In Law is moving down to live by us, so no more travely 100 miles to see her every other week.
(Brenda Rupp 8:14pm November 26, 2009)

Spent the holiday with family. Good food, good conversation and time spent enjoying my granddaughter.
(Paul Lieberman 8:58pm November 26, 2009)

I'm thankful that my mother is in good
health and has been with me and
generous with her support. I'm
thankful for my own health that has
allowed me to be there to support my
brother through his health issues.
(Sue Ahn 8:59pm November 26, 2009)

I'm thankful for my friends and family, my health and for having a job in this economy. Last but not least I'm thankful for all the talented authors who have wonderful books to keep me happy.
(Sherry Strode 9:43pm November 26, 2009)

We have lost so many family and friends in the past couple of years, but when we get together at Thanksgiving those who are left enjoy each other more. The food may be great, but the company is what makes the day and I am glad that we are here for each other!
(Karin Tillotson 10:15pm November 26, 2009)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I am thankful that I have my family around me and that I can enjoy my grandchildren. I love being part of their lives.
