Thank you so much for inviting me to guest blog today at Fresh Fiction. St. Patrick’s Day has always been a special day in our family. My grandfather was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. His father came over from Dublin, Ireland June 19, 1871 when he was 8 years old. I recently discovered the passenger’s list on Ancestry.com and found out that he was a passenger on the ship Calabria.

I wanted to add a special twist to the characters in all of my books, by using family names and my Irish heritage. The heroine in my first book, THE MARSHAL’S DESTINY, was named after my great-grandmother, Margaret Mary Flaherty. Three generations of the feisty Irish-American women in our family: Garahan, Flaherty, Daly and Purcell, with their sharp tongues, hard heads and big hearts have kept our family strong and definitely helped influence the creation of the fictional Margaret Mary Flaherty.

My latest trilogy from Sourcebooks: The Secret Life of Cowboys begins with TYLER, the oldest brother’s story. I love writing trilogies and series, that way I don’t have to suffer through withdrawal when I have to say goodbye to the characters who have kept me company while I’ve woven their story and brought it to life on the page for readers.

The Garahans are dark-haired, dark-eyed, gorgeous Irish Americans who are trying to save their family legacy—the Circle G Ranch—located in Pleasure, Texas. It’s been in the family for over 150 years, but the mortgage is due and the feed bill is overdue, and the ranch is in trouble. I started thinking what would a rancher do if he had to earn extra money? What job would he be qualified for? There aren’t a whole lot of jobs feeding stock and mending fences unless it’s on another ranch. Tyler knows they need money fast. He answers an ad for what he thinks will be a job stocking shelves and hauling kegs for a local bar—but he’s being hired as the Lucky Star’s new headliner for their ladies’ club!

He’s so out of his element standing there, but a distraction in the form of one curvy, bare-footed redhead with a slash of chocolate across her cheekbone and splash of chocolate in the middle of her T-shirt, captures his interest. When he learns she’s the cousin of the club’s owner, he realizes that he’ll have to stick around if he wants to get to know her better. Emily Langley is just as taken with Tyler. From the moment she sees him looking so out of place standing there in the middle of their club, she wants to get to know him. He looks like the real deal, a true cowboy, not a cowboy-dancer-wannabe.

Here’s an excerpt:

Tyler brushed his lips across hers once, then twice, before settling them against her full lips. Her honey-sweet taste shot to his head like three fingers of his grandpa’s favorite Irish whiskey. He struggled against the need to devour and settled for a taste of her creamy skin, pressing his lips against her temple and the tip of her nose, before he finally pressed them to the top of her head.

Holding her against him was pure torture. He didn’t know how long he’d have to wait before convincing her he would be worth the time to get to know. One thing he did know was that he’d be locking lips with Miss Emily again… soon… real soon.

He eased back from their embrace, running his hands from her shoulders, along the surprisingly toned length of her arms, until he had her hands in his. It felt right.

“’Night, Emily.”

She tilted her head up to meet his gaze and softly smiled. “Goodnight, Tyler.”

In honor of my Irish ancestors, I’m continuing my genealogy efforts. I know that my great-great grandmother, Ana Garahan married Patrick Henry Flaherty and lived in Troy, NY, but I don’t know what part of Ireland their ancestors were from.

Hi Pat! I think it was Nora Roberts who first got me hooked reading series. It's so hard to say goodbye to a character; trilogies and series give you just a bit more time to stay, but I agree, it is hard to wait for the next book. ;)

Fun hearing some Irish family facts; my grandmother was Irish and married my grandfather who was British and they moved to Canada. Bt I don't remember much of her talking about her life in Ireland.

My sister-in-law and her family live in Baggs, Wyoming and ever since they got married I've been fascinated by the rough and tumble hardworking cowboys of the west. This story really definately sounds like it will be fun to read!

Hi Marjorie ~ It's been a learning experience so far and I was so excited to start finding concrete facts about my mother's side of the family.

My mom has the family tree that was created in 1862 for
the Lippincott branch of the family - my father's side. It's huge - 3' wide and on a roller, like the maps they used to have in schools. It's very fragile.

I'm delighted to be uncovering our Irish roots.

Hi Diane ~ it's amazing what you can discover at ancestry dot com, I found the 1900 and the 1930 census that confirmed the date my grandfather came over, which led me to the immigrant records and the name of the ship.

I wish I had stories that had been handed down about every-day life in Ireland. I wish I had written down all of the family stories my grandparents and great grandparents told.

Hi Jeanne ~ Wyoming is one state I'd love to visit and when I'm there, you can bet I'll be visiting a working ranch. ;) There is just something about cowboys: larger-than-life, men of the land who are both physically and emotionally strong to have to face the elements and the challenge of raising steer/cows/horses the type of animal doesn't matter, it's what is at the heart of these heroic figures that does.

Hi *waving from Spartanburg, SC* Although I'm a transplant from Detroit with roots in Hungary. My great grandparents immigrated from Hungary and I still have family there that I was privilege to meet a few years ago. We now communicate via Facebook.

An actual cowboy as a dancer - I like this! I have got to see how Emily and Tyler's story plays out.

What an unusual storyline twist regarding the hero. Love the idea. Am a fan of trilogies and short series since I also love to revisit place/characters that I have grown fond of and miss them after a story ends.

Oh it sounds so good. There's nothing as good/bad as a real cowboy! It is on my list to read that's for sure! As for the Irish heritage, my grandparents on my Da's side left Northern Ireland together in the 1927.

I have to say that your excerpt was so tender and HOT at the same time!! I have never read your books before, but you are definately at the top of my TBR list!! My Grandparents came to Ellis Island in the 1800's, but from Poland. My Grandmother was a little girl, and my Grandfather was a little older. They got together through someone in the community where they lived, and the rest is history!! Genealology is an amazing thing. Hi Sandra ~ OMG ROFL after reading about the death certificate you came across! You're absolutely right about them being viable means of tracing your roots, too. My mom and dad spent some time doing rubbings from gravestones. At first I thought it was odd and then realizes, it really wasn't. It was solid proof with dates.

Hi Peggy~I'm glad you liked the snippet of their first kiss. I'll always remember the first time my husband kissed me...I still sigh when I think of it and I wanted that to come through when Tyler kisses Emily for the first time.

I love your grandparent's story!! Communities were so important to our immigrant ancestors. That's how my great-grandfather met my great-grandmother--she was 1st generation Irish American in NYC.

My father was born in Ireland & came here at the age of 3 in 1921. So I'm always drawn to stories that include the Irish. What can be better than a story of a cowboy of Irish descent?

I'd love to go someday when we pay off all of the college loans for our three children;) I've always loved stories that include our heritage in it. Right now, my daughter's watching the movie Leprechauns, we've already watched Darby O'Gill & the Little People, and The Quiet Man...The Matchmaker's up next!

It was gorgeous here in north Jersey today! I started uncovering our gardens and found Snow Drops and Crocuses in bloom. I really love Spring!

I find it so interesting that you use your own family names in your books. It
adds a personal touch.

Also, it's perfectly natural to feel apprehensive about feelings of
withdrawal. I'm sure readers have the same feelings when their favorite
characters are gone(book ends or the character is written out). I imagine it
would be worse for authors seeing that they created the characters.

That is just so grand that you are naming characters in your book with your ancestors' names. I love it when I know the special meaning behind the names. I look forward to reading it.

I found out from family lore that my mother's family comes from a former shield bearer to a 12th century Irish king but I think that has been the last irish connection as the rest is all Scottish. Thank goodness everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

How wonderful that you can trace your Irish roots back to a shield bearer to a 12th century Irish king and have Scottish roots. Just listening to a Scottish or Irish brogue simply melts me-the speaker could be 100 and I'd still be entranced. ;)
