Vannetta Chapman | Top 5 Ingredients for a Cozy Mystery
June 12, 2015
1. A nosy sleuth. Let’s face it, these people do poke around in other
people’s
business. Yes, there are good reasons (poison pies?). But every cozy has a
super nosy
character who thinks they’d make a good detective. Wouldn’t we all? In this
case it’s a good
thing that Amber Wright sticks her nose where it may not belong.
2. A sidekick. What would a cozy mystery be without a sidekick?
Someone who can
lighten the mood and maybe add a needed different perspective. Sweet Hannah
Troyer fits the
bill, and for the fine folks at the Amish Artisan Village, she might just
save the day.
3. A murder. You can’t have a cozy without a murder. What would our
characters
investigate? In Murder Freshly Baked I decided to start the book with the
dirty deed. “Amber
Bowman was looking directly at Ryan Duvall when he died.” Whoah! Where are
we going to go
from there? I promise you that the tension mounts and the action increases
to the very last
page.
4. A close community. Cozy mysteries work because the sleuth and the
sidekick know
everyone, or at least they think they do. In small towns we’re close to one
another, we know
one another’s faults and strengths, and when danger lurks—we pull together.
Middlebury
Indiana is a place where Amish and Englisch work and live side by side, and
it’s going to
take both groups to solve Ryan’s murder.
5. A dog. Okay, I made that up. Every cozy mystery does not have a
dog, but this one
does, and you are going to fall in love with Mocha who is more than a sweet
canine. She’s a
trained service dog for people with PTSD. Can she also help capture a
killer?

When delicious baked goods become lethal, it’s time to find a killer.
Kindness is a virtue
Meanness is a sin
Better watch your bakery pies
For poison I've slipped in
The Amish Artisan Village in Middlebury, Indiana, has been decorated with
every color of
balloon and flower for the Race for a Cure. As manager of the Village, Amber
Bowman is
thrilled to see the turnout—and relieved to have something to distract her
from the “Poison
Poet”—an individual who has been sending notes containing bad poetry to warn
of poisoned
baked goods.
Then Ryan Duvall crosses the finish line of the race—and falls down dead,
murdered in broad
daylight. But who did it? And why? The police suspect Preston Johnston, but
Amber refuses to
believe her employee could do such a thing.
Amber once again looks to her young Amish friend Hannah Troyer to help her
find the killer—
and to determine if it’s the same person leaving the cryptic poems and pies.
Can they help
the police before the Poison Poet strikes again? Both Amber and Hannah will
need to draw on
their faith as they fight to preserve the peaceful community they’ve built
at the Amish
Artisan Village.
