SANDI SHILHANEK | Werewolves, Vampires, Shapeshifters Oh My!

facebook

With Halloween right around the corner I thought it would be time to discuss some authors who write paranormal romance. I know that there are tons of them out there, but I have to admit that I am not really a big paranormal reader….bad right? I am surely missing some really terrific stuff.

I have read and really enjoyed Dakota Cassidy. I’ve had the chance to meet her personally and have to say that she writes just like she talks! I’ve been collecting Michele Bardsley and Jaye Wells because both these lovely ladies are authors who live in my area, and along with Dakota Cassidy are going to be appearing at Readers 'n 'Ritas in November.

I’ve also read Dark Lover by J. R. Ward because my friends insisted I was going to love it. I have to admit that I was hesitant, but did enjoy every page, and someday will move on to the rest of the series.

I know that there aren’t many books dedicated to Halloween like there are books dedicated to Christmas, but with the vast array of paranormal romances available there surely has to be something to please everyone. What do you recommend for someone like me who is fairly new to paranormals, but has read one here or there?

Re: SANDI SHILHANEK | Werewolves, Vampires, Shapeshifters Oh My!

I can't think of any books I have read that focus on Halloween, thought many important events happened on Halloween in the Harry Potter series. I like the young adult books for paranormal, as they are less scary (and Stephen King books scared me too much as a kid). But I really like Skulduggery Pleasant books and the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

A few of my favorite paranormal romance series that are highly popular and are on autobuy which you may enjoy are:

Kresley Cole, Immortals After Dark Series
Shayla Black, Doomsday Brethren Series
Larissa Ione, Demonica Series

Of course, it goes without saying, you must continue on with the BDB series!
(Cynthia Netherton 10:43am October 30, 2010)

I just getting into paranormals too but I read Alexandra Ivy's Darkness series and Loved them I read them back to back they were so good. I haven't read the most recent because she changed from all Vampire hero's to a were hero and I'm just not into that they are to much animal for me. lol

But I highly reccommend that series, it's amazing!!

Oh, there are so many that you could start with. I'll try to limit them othewise I'd probably end up naming every paranormal author I can think of!

There are so many types of paranormal books out there. And some people have specific tastes for each type. After reading a few you tend to get a feel for what you like. But since you really liked Dakota Cassidy(so do I!), then I'd probaly suggest:

Molly Harper, The Nice Girls Series (Jane Jameson Series)
Gerry Bartlett, The Real Vampires Series
Maryjanice Davidson, The Undead Series or Fred the Mermaid
Nicole Peeler, Jane True Series

A couple others that are really good are:
Ilona Andrews, The Edge Series or Kate Daniels Series
Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thompson Series
Linda Robertson
Eileen Wilks
Other than those, I'd definitely try to finish the J.R. Ward series. Certainly one of my favorites.

I still mentioned more than I meant to and I could keep going too. I'll do just about anything to bring more people over to the paranormal fold!
(Rae M. 11:45am October 30, 2010)

You just can't leave out Christine Feehan's series of books about the Carpathians. I was absolutely rivited and couldn't stop unti I'd read all of them. Of course I have to admit to being pretty focused when reading all books!
(Elizabeth Parzino 12:00pm October 30, 2010)

I am not sure if she is considered paranormal but the Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter are excellent! I also love the Immortal series by Carolyn Jewel - can't wait til the third book is released in January and the fourth in June! Larissa Ione's Demonica series is also excellent! There are so many good ones out there! Paranormal is definitely one of my favorite genres!
(Sharla Long 1:17pm October 30, 2010)

Nice book to highlight for Halloween. Love the vampire and werewolf stuff.
(Vicki Hancock 1:18pm October 30, 2010)

I do not know so much about this, but Rachel Vincent's book, Shift, has a great cover.
(Alyson Widen 1:19pm October 30, 2010)

A great way to end October.
Blessings,
Marjorie
(Marjorie Carmony 1:28pm October 30, 2010)

I am a fan of Kendra Leigh Castle's Highland Werewolves...
(Colleen Conklin 1:36pm October 30, 2010)

As a long time avid reader (as in all my life), I've read a lot of paranormal books plus a lot of everything else. I agree with some of the other posts about authors and I would add the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and the Breeds series by Lora Leigh but there is an older series of vampire books by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro about the Count St. Germain that I loved. I have also read a lot of Stephen King and Anne Rice but sometimes they get too intense for me. The St Germain books are still my all time favorites.
(Vickie McCarter 1:44pm October 30, 2010)

Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Jennifer Estep and Faith Hunter are some of the ones I've gotten into in the last year. Have a fantastic Halloween
(Lena Lee 1:50pm October 30, 2010)

I'd recommend Charlaine Harris's Harper Connelly 4-book series and Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld ongoing series.
(G S Moch 1:58pm October 30, 2010)

All the series I am suggesting have strong-willed, kick butt women, who can hold their own.

Kresley Cole-Immortals After Dark Series: If you want a world where humans are unaware of paranormals. A world of werewolves, vampires, witches, Valkyries, Demons etc with steamy monogumous romance, action, and a bit of adventure. All the stories coincide with each other as in each character/s have their own story but may share some of the same scenes and events from previous stories, just in their perspective. All the stories lead to an eventual paranormal war on Earth.

Laurell K Hamilton-Anita Blake Series: A very dark world where paranormals have intergrated with the human one. Lots of death, blood, gore, and graphic sex for the heroine and her men. Anita is a necromancer, Federal Marshal(who helps solve supernatual crimes), Vampire Executioner, and a human servant to a vampire. There are zombies, ghosts, vampires, all sorts of were animals, faeries, and mer-people.
(Cindy Gilles 2:33pm October 30, 2010)

Add to those listed above:

S.J.Day's Marked series; Shayla Black's Doomsday Brethren series; Sylvia Day's Dream Guardians; Karin Tabke's Blood Moon Trilogy (coming in 2011), and her Blood Sword series; Karin Harlow's L.O.S.T. series; Nikki Duncan's Sensory Ops series; Shiloh Walker's Hunters series (actually just about ANYTHING Shiloh writes!); Cathryn Fox's Eternal Pleasure and Pleasure Inn series; Taylor Keatings' Guardian Series.

I could go on and on, but I'm running out of time on my parking meter, so check all of these ladies out. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 2:59pm October 30, 2010)

*Adrian Phoenix The Makers song series
*Sherrilyn Kenyon's The League series
*Janet Chapman's Moonlight Warrior
*Karin Harlow's Enemy Lover

Feehan also has a Ghost Walker series that I love.
(Sarah Ulfers 3:18pm October 30, 2010)

No Halloween ones that I can think of but some good paranormal books: Nalini Singh's Psy series, Lara Adrian's series very similar to JR Ward's, Kresley Cole's, a mixture of paranormals, Shelly Laurenston's, great reads.
(Diane Sadler 3:22pm October 30, 2010)

so many great books to read and sometimes it definitely seems as though there is not enough time. I see so many favourite authors listed, but I also love Susan Squires' Companion Series, and her time travel series. And we can't forget Susan Sizemore's Primes or Shelley Laurenston's beasts either! I just love the wild dogs...they are always a hoot!!!
(Rosemarie Brungard 3:25pm October 30, 2010)

Want to win
(Catherine Myers 4:00pm October 30, 2010)

Don't limit yourself to adult
books - some YA authors are
writing terrific paranormal
romances. Try Shiver by Maggie
Stiefvater, for a start.
(Margay Roberge 4:28pm October 30, 2010)

I can't think of a book off hand and I am just going into the paranormal books and not that familiar with any writers. Maybe I will win some and get to explore the paranormal world.
(Brenda Hill 4:38pm October 30, 2010)

Rachel Caine
Kim Harrison
Laurell K Hamilton
(G. Bisbjerg 4:41pm October 30, 2010)

I love Kresley Cole's Immortals after Dark series, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-hunters series, Meljean Brook's Guardian series, and Nalini Singh's Psy/changeling series.
(Marlene Breakfield 4:46pm October 30, 2010)

(Vikki Parman 5:47pm October 30, 2010)

If you are looking for darker than dark you can't go past Stephen King.
(Mary Preston 5:47pm October 30, 2010)

I'm not really into reading paranormals either, but isn't v c andrews a popular paranormal author, or am I completely out of the loop? I know that when I'm at the library, I see a ton of her books on the shelves!! I know there are a lot of them who are at Fresh Fiction as well, but I'm still pretty new around here, and just learning about all of the authors and their works.
(Peggy Roberson 5:48pm October 30, 2010)

I am a BIG paranormal romance fan and read all I can get my hands on. One who wrights great paranormal and I enjoy her a ton is Kate Douglas, also Cheryl Brooks Cat Star Books are GREAT.
(Vickie Hightower 5:52pm October 30, 2010)

(Pamela Pellini 6:32pm October 30, 2010)

Read Beautiful Creatures!
(Cathie Veres 7:02pm October 30, 2010)

I enjoy Karen Kelley. The stories are dramatic, sexy ,and have humor that isn't snarky, but will have you laughing out loud.
(Leni Kaye 7:09pm October 30, 2010)

Some more that I forgot earlier: Christine Feehan's Drake Sisters, and her new Sea Haven series, set in the same home town as the Drake Sisters, and I'm willing to bet that they will have some interaction (haven't had a chance to read my copy of the first one yet!).

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 7:36pm October 30, 2010)

hope you have great trick or treat and would love to win one of the book bags and goodies never have
(Desiree Reilly 7:48pm October 30, 2010)

I love books, once I read one, it is passed on to my sister, mother and grandmother.
(Linda Skillen 7:59pm October 30, 2010)

What better way than to read Maggie Shayne's Twilight series in the interest of vampires.

Heather Graham covers vampire and ghosts and all things supernatural. There's might have been some moments when the crazies come out.

Enjoy!!!
(Kai Wong 8:14pm October 30, 2010)

I love Stephen King and Heather Graham but was surprised to find I really enjoyed the Laurell Hamilton Anita Blake series. Not usually a fan of vampires but enjoyed reading that series.
(Teresa Ward 8:31pm October 30, 2010)

To dip your toe in a little further into paranormal romance I say go back to JR Ward. I never would have thought I'd get into paranormal, but she's the one that got hooked. I read the whole BDB series and couldn't get enough. Another really good paranormal is Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series.
(Julie Wirth 8:59pm October 30, 2010)

I'm a bit of a voracious reader. For paranormal/urban fantasy I suggest books by Patricia Briggs, Heather Graham, Gena Showalter, Michelle Hauf, and P.C. Cast.
You'll get shifters, vamps, time travel, etc. The genre is wide-reaching.Bon Appetit!
(Debra Mowatt 9:03pm October 30, 2010)

I love paranormal romance books.
Dakota is also one of my favorite
authors.
(Gayle Oreluk 11:06pm October 30, 2010)

It isn't about Halloween, but one of my favorite vampire novels is "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova.
(Ginger Hinson 11:53pm October 30, 2010)

Hey guys don't forget The Legend of Sleepy Hollow! Can just imagine the discussion when that book came out, yesss?!My daughter love's the vampires, etc. guess I started her with 'Dark Shadows" on TV years ago. :)

I have been sampling the many variations in the paranormal fiction world and have been pleasantly surprised. I just found 3 of Ward's series, DARK LOVER included, and look forward to reading them.
(Patricia Barraclough 9:11am October 31, 2010)

I am in love with The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan.
(Jessica Badeaux 9:29am October 31, 2010)

What a super way to end October. Treats for the kids and adults
(Sandi Denmark 10:08am October 31, 2010)

Love Shelly Laurenston and Richelle Meade.
(Maria Munoz 1:57pm October 31, 2010)

(Robin Blankenship 2:52pm October 31, 2010)

Tanya Huff's The Blood Book series.
(Sue Ahn 3:38pm October 31, 2010)

To the many authors already named, I'd add Lori Handeland's Nightcreature series. Also, in a lighter vein, I like Katie MacAlister's dragon series. Who can resist a friendly demon that looks like a Newfoundland and has to wear a bib to catch all the slobbering?
(r w 4:23pm October 31, 2010)

You can never go wrong with the queen of paranormal romance, MaryJanice Davidson.
I just read The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston and I LOVED it!
My newest favorite is J.K. Beck (Julie Kenner's penname). When Blood Calls was so good that I read it again within a month of the first read!
(Jennifer Lee 6:12pm October 31, 2010)

Hi Sandi! Before I read paranormal romance, I didn't care for Halloween, and now I look forward to it because so many awesome reads out there especially in Oct! But they all year round! I so love Judi Fennell's Underwater Kingdom books! Remember Mermaids and Mermens?, well she has a Mer Kingdom. Awesome reads! And she has Genies coming out next!!
(Cathie Morton 6:52pm October 31, 2010)

I enjoy Dakota Cassidy and Christine Feehan. Recently read Waterbound by Christine. Great story.
(Teresa Ward 7:17pm October 31, 2010)

I enjoyed Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thompson Series and Libra Brey's books.
(Michele Powell 12:48pm November 1, 2010)

Hi Sandi,
I've missed stopping by here to see what your subject is. Glad to see you doing the blog.
I'm not a paranormal fan but some of my favorite authors have written books with a paranormal element (to my way of thinking). First is Nora Roberts, right now I'm reading her Donovan Legacy series which is about a family with extra "gifts" handed down through generations. These stories are my favorite Halloween reading. Others that have written paranormal are Julie Leto's Phantom series, Leslie Parrish series of Extrasensory Agents, the first book is Cold Sight, the next is Cold Touch out in April of 2011. That is all I have right off the top of my head! Nora Roberts has actually written a lot of books with a paranormal element and she does them very well. I know Halloween is over but the information is still good!
Take care,
