Like many of us, I take my caffeine very seriously.

I had my first cup of coffee when I was twelve. I don't remember if I liked it but I guess I must have. I haven't been able to function without it since. Seven years ago I quit smoking with little difficulty. My longest run without coffee? About two weeks during college, and I'm pretty sure I cheated during that stint with the occasional Red Bull and vodka.

While editing KING OF DARKNESS, my favorite coffee flavor was Caramel Vanilla Cream. While finishing the sequel, Golden French Toast.

If I don't have my daily jolt, I can't really make with that whole stringing words together business that I rely on for my livelihood.  I probably wouldn't pass a field sobriety test. Next to getting dressed, it's the most important part of my day.  Sometimes there's growling and biting, and I don't mean from my vampire characters.

So as I am writing this post from my favorite local Starbucks and hugging my beloved Blonde roast while I type, I thought I'd do something a little lighthearted. Today I bring you coffee trivia:

  • Coffee, as a world commodity, is second only to oil.
  • An ordinary cup of coffee contains about 150 milligrams of caffeine - what most physicians call a "therapeutic dose."
  • On average, men drink more coffee than women (1.7 cups per day vs 1.5 cups) – I can tell you in my house this is total BS. My husband hates coffee, whereas I would readily sign up for one of those IV drip things if I could.
  • The average annual coffee consumption of the American adult is 26.7 gallons, or over 400 cups.
  • The Arabica is the original coffee plant. It still grows wild in Ethiopia.
  • Turkish bridegrooms were once required to make a promise during their wedding ceremonies to always provide their new wives with coffee. If they failed to do so, it was grounds for divorce.
  • Espresso has 1/3 of the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee.
  • All coffee is grown within 1,000 miles of the equator, from the Tropic of Cancer in the north, to the Tropic of Capricorn in the south.
  • The French philosopher, Voltaire, reportedly drank fifty cups of coffee a day. Yowzers!
  • (and this is an important one folks!) Studies tell us the human body will absorb only 300 milligrams of caffeine at a given time. Additional amounts are cast off and will provide no additional stimulation. The human body dissipates 20% of the caffeine in the system each hour.

In KING OF DARKNESS, my vampires enjoy the lovey-dovey buzz of wine (in addition to their all-important blood, of course) and yes, also the occasional cup of Joe. One writer friend I know can't start her day without a cup of Earl Grey Tea. What about you, what beverage can you not live without?

About KING OF DARKNESS:

ETERNAL COMMITMENT IS NOT ON HER AGENDA...

Scorned by the vampire community for her lack of power, Isabel Anthony lives a carefree existence masquerading as human--although drifting through the debauched human nightlife, she prefers the patrons' blood to other indulgences. But when she meets the sexy, arrogant king of the vampires, this party-girl's life turns dark and dangerous.

BUT TIME'S RUNNING OUT FOR THE KING OF THE VAMPIRES...

Dead-set on finding the prophesied mate who will unlock his fiery powers, Thad Morgan must find his queen before their race is destroyed. Their enemies are gaining ground, and Thad needs his powers to unite his subjects. But when his search leads him to the defiant Isabel, he wonders if fate had gotten it seriously wrong...

KING OF DARKNESS is available at:  Amazon : Barnes and Noble : IndieBound

Elisabeth Staab lives in Northern Virginia with her hero and soul mate. She has been a telemarketer, a web page editor, a software developer, a reader for the blind, a technical trainer, a coffee shop barista, a tutor, a homemaker, a government project manager, a graphic designer, and a professional ebayer. Finally, she's landed on being a writer - which is what her high school guidance counselor originally suggested anyway.

Elisabeth believes that all kinds of safe, sane, and consensual love should be celebrated--but she loves the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. Find out more at ElisabethStaab.com.

Re: Coffee Trivia by Elisabeth Staab

I love vampire books. This sounds like a terrific book that will keep me turning the pages. I find the description of this book truly engrossing and would love to read this book. Actually everyone in my house would love to read it.

Paranormal Romance is a very interesting genre because it alows us to explore new realms and use our imaginations.
(Chelsea Knestrick 5:45am February 22, 2012)

Yes! Bring on the coffee! My first cup was Sanka (remember
that?!) with my Grandma. I had my own tiny version of a coffee
cup and I know Grandma pretty much gave me some coffee with my
milk and sugar:-) It was a special time and thus...began my
love for coffee.
(Patti DelValle 5:46am February 22, 2012)

Coffee, YES!! I didn't start drinking coffee until I was 25, and I haven't stopped since. Fortunately I can have the caffeine.
Blessings,
Marjorie

I love coffee and vampires!!! Hope I win. Thanks!
(Sally Hannoush 7:32am February 22, 2012)

I'm drinking my morning coffee as I write this! I wish you much success!
(Renee Pajda 8:02am February 22, 2012)

I like the smell of coffee brewing, but I hate the taste. I get my caffeine in the form of Diet Coke, but I try to limit the "hard stuff" to two cans a day then switch to caffeine free.
(Anne Muller 9:00am February 22, 2012)

(Mal Kaplan 9:04am February 22, 2012)

vampires are the big stories now days and have held a warm spot for many, many years now, only difference these days is some vampires are held in a good light and people root for them to continue to their undead lives.
(Michael Cuchinelli 9:45am February 22, 2012)

Coffee and vampires... my 2 favorite things! :) Love coffee but can't take the caffeine so it has to be decaf for me...
(May Pau 10:24am February 22, 2012)

HI ELISABETH, I TOO LOVE MY FLAVORED COFFEE AS MUCH AS
PARANORMAL READS!
(Linda Bass 10:53am February 22, 2012)

Coffee..yes..hot or iced..either way..love it!! Thanks for sharing!!
(Dawn Staniszeski 10:54am February 22, 2012)

I'm really glad I stumbled accross this...looks like a great read. Not really a fan of coffee but I love different kinds of tea?
(Alyssa m 11:34am February 22, 2012)

I am reading the 'Harry Dresden' books which touch on all things paranormal. They are a great read. And coffee isn't bad either :). I need my morning cup to get me going.
(Robin McKay 12:00pm February 22, 2012)

Not a coffee or tea drinker... but I gotta have my flavored diet sodas.
(Colleen Conklin 12:05pm February 22, 2012)

I absolutely love vampire books. I'm actually writing one now. I hope I get to read this one. Have a great day :)
(Meghan Anderson 12:26pm February 22, 2012)

I love a cup of coffee in the morning, but if I could choose only one beverage that I could not do without it would be jasmine tea.
(G. Bisbjerg 1:19pm February 22, 2012)

I love vampire books but it's tea for me not coffee.
(Barbara Hanson 1:45pm February 22, 2012)

I've got to have my morning coffee! The day just doesn't start off as well without
it.
Your book looks interesting, Elisabeth!
(Debbie Burdeen 2:14pm February 22, 2012)

I have never been a coffee drinker but at one time I was severely addicted to caffeine through Pepsi. I finally went through all the withdrawals and have been Pepsi free for 5 years now. I drank clear sodas for awhile then decided it was too many wasted calories so I primarily drink water now.
Good luck and happy writing!
(Tracie Travis 2:16pm February 22, 2012)

Coffee all day long! All the way up til bedtime - I think we
are immune to caffeine! All I can say is that if vampires look
like the guy on the cover, he can bite my neck anytime!
(Karen Gonzalez 2:17pm February 22, 2012)

Wow, thanks so much everyone! I appreciate the support and the
interest in King of Darkness! LOVING all the caffeine
comments! omg, Sanka. I remember Sanka. Thank you so much,
everyone!
(Elisabeth Staab 2:22pm February 22, 2012)

Hi Elisabeth! I have your book on my wishlist. I read about it a few months ago and was intrigued! Can't wait to read it!

Oh, and coffee is the essence of life and I can't imagine a world with out it...LOL
(Susan Galley 2:31pm February 22, 2012)

I love unexpected heroines!
(Lisa Elwood 3:00pm February 22, 2012)

I start my day with a cup of tea. I stopped drinking coffee when I stopped smoking since the two were linked together in my mind.
(Maureen Emmons 3:58pm February 22, 2012)

I don't drink coffee. I do love a nice cup of Earl Grey. Coffee is just too strong for me. :)
(Stacie Deramo 4:21pm February 22, 2012)

Congrats on the release Elisabeth. I go through stages where coffee tastes great and then I switch to tea. I like having a cup of something hot in the morning while I am getting the kids ready for school, whether coffee or tea, sometimes cocoa.
(Christine Arcidiacono 4:29pm February 22, 2012)

I am a candy coffee person only. Lattes. But they are teats. I get my caffeine fix from Pepsi every morning. The book sounds super delish.
(Patricia Reed 4:37pm February 22, 2012)

I have never drunk coffee. I tend to get my caffeine fix for
soft drinks.
Your book sounds great. I love a good vampire book.
(June A, Manning 5:10pm February 22, 2012)

I love coffee,I starting drinking it when I was 12.I also love reading vampire books. Thanks for giving me a chance to win your book.
(Linda Hall 6:08pm February 22, 2012)

I am not a morning person but I'm a teacher so I'm at work early. I take a
bottle of green tea and on hard days I drink a big cup of coffee then the
tea
(Tabitha Monroe 6:18pm February 22, 2012)

Coffee...hot, iced or flavored....Mmmmm. When I'm not drinking my coffee it's tea or water but with Starbucks around the corner what can I say. My sun tea at home but on the road my jeep has a mind of it's own I think. Oh, what a tantalizing King he looks like. The little taste you gave leaves the hunger to find out how he's going to work his magic. Keep them coming!
(Margie Gagarin 6:34pm February 22, 2012)

I love paranormal reads and would love to read your book which sounds great! I love to drink cranberry juice, apple juice, orange juice, grape juice and lemon soda. I do drink coffee but not everyday and can live without it. Gotta have my juice, as I feel it's a healthier choice, and I love combinations in my juices...cranberry-pomegranate is very good! Thanks for the chance to win "King of Darkness".
(Linda Luinstra 6:36pm February 22, 2012)

Vampire books, movies and TV shows are awfully popular nowadays. I prefer caffeine of the green tea sort or chocolate.
(Alyson Widen 6:52pm February 22, 2012)

thanks for the chance to snaging your interesting sounding
book. WTG on your writing skills.
Just love a hot, strong, cup of Joe.
(Dayle Butler 7:32pm February 22, 2012)

I am a tea drinker, decaf but in the late afternoon around 3:00 I need some
coffee and need it bad then it sort of get me going again
(Shelly Itkin 7:47pm February 22, 2012)

I love having my coffee first thing in the morning, but I must have my Coke the rest of the day - otherwise I just can't function!! There's a cold glass of it always sitting near me, or a bottle of it with me in our vehicle when we have to go somewhere. Sometimes I'll take a coffee diversion in the afternoon, but that's in the Winter, when it's cold out. Love the title of your book, and I'm anxious to read it!!
(Peggy Roberson 8:09pm February 22, 2012)

Love my coffee. Did not start until I was about 18; mom made me drink my milk until then. Now it's all coffee and no milk
(Shirley Younger 8:30pm February 22, 2012)

Such a cool variety of answers, I appreciate all of you for
stopping by. Thanks so much, everyone! :)
(Elisabeth Staab 8:55pm February 22, 2012)

While I love the aroma of coffee, I don't care for the taste. Tea is my favored drink.
(Mary C 9:52pm February 22, 2012)

No coffee for me. I love tea and one Pepsi One daily.
(Molly Wilsbacher 10:47pm February 22, 2012)

2 cups every morning!! and i love reading paranormal books and this one sounds great!! thanks
(Jennifer Beck 11:15pm February 22, 2012)

I usually only drink coffee when I'm cold. I'm a Mountain Dew person. Thanks for the trivia!
(Lisa Kendall 1:15am February 23, 2012)

I love tea & coffee, in equal amounts. Both part of my daily routine.
(Mary Preston 3:40am February 23, 2012)

I can't remember my first cup. I was raised in a
Sicilian household. Coffee is what you poured
cereal in to eat in the morning with another cup
to drink. Espresso was what you drank after
dinner. My favorite ice cream flavor is coffee. I
know the love and I also wonder if my 5'2"
frame isn't because of my consumption of the
black gold.
