Do I prefer writing Alpha or Beta heroes and why? Oh gosh...I think all my guys
are a little of both. I like a strong man that isn't afraid to be soft and
gentle. What I like comes out in my heroes, of course. I mean...I have to hang
out with them non-stop for months...I better love them! Where do I find the inspirations for my heroes? Some are simply favorite traits
from men I know. Some from well-known entertainers that we all know. The
inspiration for Cody Tuggle in OUT OF FOCUS and PECAN PIE AND DEADLY LIES
was Bret Michaels. From a looks perspective he was kind of a Toby Keith/Bret
Michaels combo, but what struck me as I watched Celebrity Apprentice was
that Bret Michaels was so much more than what he came off as on Rock of Love and
in the tabloids. I was so impressed with how kind-hearted and sincere he was and
his daddy/daughter moments absolutely melted my heart. My husband just passed away last week. He was a man's man. Very rugged.
Handsome. There wasn't anything he couldn't do. He had an amazing quick wit and
there are lots of little pieces of Mr. Mike in all of my heroes. If my hero was a famous actor, who would it be and why? Depends on which one
we're talking about. I can tell you that Derek is the hero of the next Adams
Grove novel. You'll meet him for the first time in the Valentine's Day short
story collection titled WRAPPED AROUND YOUR HEART. I picture Kevin
Costner as I'm writing that one. Not a bad way to spend your day. MINT JULEPS AND

So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. You can keep his memories alive
through the strong romantic male heroes in your novels. I prefer the strong
alpha hero with a romantic streak.

I'm so sorry for your loss... I bet he's smiling at the
characters you're making him into in your books!
I like alpha heroes with a good heart, which is sometimes
buried until the heroine unearths it...

I enjoyed reading your posting today, and when I got to the part about your Husband, my heart just dropped!! Saying how sorry I am for your loss are only words, but they come from deep in my heart. It takes a strong Woman to go on and continue with your post, in the face of adversity, and I commend you for it. I don't know if I could do so so soon. As for your Hero, I agree with you that I prefer one who is a little of both. He should be strong, but know when to back down and be on the soft side. The cover to your latest book is so enchanting, and I'm sure what's on the inside will be even more wonderful!! Congratulations!!

I am so terribly sorry about your husband's death, and can
only wish you a good mourning, with the right companionship
on it. Mourning being one of the best and hardest gifts we
have, as humans.
As for heroes, what I really like are complex but
straightforward-- or wanting to be straightforward-- people
with interests in life.

Nancy, I want to hug you during your grief and let you know that my mother also passed away last week (on Feb. 16) from cancer, and I know it's hard to lose a loved one, even more so, your companion in life. I hope your writing and contact with people gets you through this by keeping busy.
I enjoy both types of heroes in books I read, and just the mention of pecan pie...is making me very hungry (esp. since I never ate today--to go get my taxes done)! I want to read all your books, and they do sound like great stories worth reading!!

I prefer Alpha but at the same time Beta also have those qualities like the alpha. The way I look at it is that beta are like alpha's right hand man.

Thank you, Nancy. No contest here; I prefer beta heroes. I go
for good guys in both real life and fiction. And they're much
harder to find in the latter than in the former.

I'll always go for an Alpha man, but, he really needs to have more brain than brawn. :) It's always a shame when they look so wonderful and then they can't string 5 words together to make an intelligent statement. But, in romance novels all the Alpha men have a lot to offer and that's what I like about daydreaming about the hero as I read.
