Rachel Firasek | Trick or Treat

goodreads

...stroking and rumbling for her. "Come here, trick, I have a treat for you. It is our first Halloween after all."

That's a line from my recent Halloween Short, MASTER ME, and will be included in the Halloween Heat II Ménage short story collection coming out Oct 5th from Etopia Press. Now, if that's all you go to see of my story, depending on the type of books you read, this would either rev your engines, or really turn you off. No, my heroine is not named Trick. And, no my hero is not a total Neanderthal.

It's been about ten years since I've been to a Halloween Party, but the last one I went to inspired me with plenty of one liners like the one above. When I was young, Halloween meant long walks down darkened streets with my parents—who absolutely had to visit at about every house we stopped at. And, as I grew older, a group of my friends would dress up and we'd pass out candy at my house, scaring the bejeezus out of toddlers. I know, we're a sick bunch.

But, as an adult, I can't remember a Halloween Party that didn't have at least half-dozen half-naked women, at least one man in a penis—or some other apparatus—costume, and more booze than humanly possible to consume. What? You don't have parties like these? LOL!

So, as I'm reminiscing, I began to wonder how we went from sweet candies to sweet Candies. And, why did Halloween become such a darn popular holiday? I see more lights decorating houses than at Christmas—which is either a tell for our culture or just how pop culture is influencing our world today.

I personally think, that the reason Halloween has become such a sexy holiday for adults is that it's the one night that you can be a little weird—and for some their true self—without others judging. Those parties that get out of hand when bobbing for apples takes on a new meaning, and don't seem so bad the next day when you can blame it on the moon or the spirits. Men let down their rigid control to get into the mood of role playing. Women show more skin than normal and don't mind, because they are the Doctor's nurse and looking for wayward patients. It's all in good fun. And as long as everyone's consensual, everyone has a good time.

Hmmm....I miss those parties, lol.

So, today, I want to talk about the parties you've been too lately or will go to this month. Do you find them to be stuffy—like the office Christmas parties—or do you find that people will surprise you? Please share!! And, don't forget to check out my story on Friday! Love to all!!!

One commenter will win a $25 Gift Certificate, don't miss Rachel's short!

About Rachel

Rachel's writing career began at the impressionable age of twelve with a poem dedicated to the soldiers of Desert Storm. A dark macabre affair that earned her a publication in an anthology and many raised eyebrows from family and friends, she hid her poetry and artistic style for years...

Tucked away in the heart of Central Texas, with the loving support of her husband and three children, she dusted the cobwebs from her craft. Returning to those twisted regions of her mind, she creates dark urban fantasies and soul-searching paranormal romance. Re: Rachel Firasek | Trick or Treat

love the books.
(Julio Herrera 12:54pm October 3, 2012)

The party I'm going to this month will be hosted by friends, so it won't be an interminable bore like the ones at work with the forced humor and speeches...gah! I don't expect anything out of the ordinary (you're right about the penis or siimilar costumes (male flasher)), but it should be fun.
(Anne Muller 12:54pm October 3, 2012)

Julio, thank you!

Anne, that non-office sounds like a fun one. Will there be incriminating photos? :)
(Rachel Firasek 1:13pm October 3, 2012)

I love Halloween parties. Yes, I am that girl that must dress up, the one that finds this holiday a very close second to Christmas, the one that feels the energy, the mystery, and the fun on Halloween.
Anything goes as far as costume, yes, there are tasteless ones, but then there are the ones that work on their costumes all year round - waiting for the night to unveil.
I never grew out of dress up, the ability to dress and become someone else.
As far as Christmas parties - between family and work parties, alcohol is a necessity and watching the fireworks.
Oh, FYI - when it comes to holiday parties, no pictures they can always crop up later and a lot of explaining must be done when you have kids.
(Carla Carlson 1:34pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't been to a Halloween party recently. But when I do everyone keeps it pretty tasteful.
(Pam Howell 2:13pm October 3, 2012)

Carla, I love that you still dress up! :) ME too. My last costume was a sexy Medusa. :)

Pam, oh no! You're missing out. *snickers*
(Rachel Firasek 2:28pm October 3, 2012)

I love getting dressed up. It's been a while but the last time was as PollyAnna. Nobody knew who I was! The fun starts after about half the crowd gets tanked.
(Jerrie Alexander 2:32pm October 3, 2012)

I love Halloween parties--decorating an old house for Halloween is so much fun, spookier the better.
(Kathy Fowler 2:33pm October 3, 2012)

thanks for a fun post and congrats on the release! I don't
really go to halloween parties cuz i don't like to dress up :)
(Erin Fender 2:42pm October 3, 2012)

Rachel, I remember a Halloween party where a very straight-laced couple came dressed in a business suit and a cocktail dress. When they turned around the back of the garments were all shredded and they were naked underneath. Nobody ever looked at them the same again! ;-)
(Patty Campbell 2:50pm October 3, 2012)

The party that i going to this month will be fantastic. It has many different games that you can win prizes at. Plus after i will enjoy some great food that will be catered by a great eatery. Not to mention i love to decorate my house and give out candy to the little kids. this is by far one of my favorite holidays. Thanks for the contest, and i love your books.
(Anthonia Sharp 2:53pm October 3, 2012)

Have never been to a Halloween party. My favorite holiday
though. :)
(Leslie Davis 3:04pm October 3, 2012)

I love dressing up for parties and I hope whenever I go that
they will be funfilled, unique and interesting food and
people.
(Sharon Berger 3:22pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't gone to a Hallowewen party in years.
(Sandy Giden 4:20pm October 3, 2012)

I don't think I can remember the last Halloween party I went to.
(Cheryl McEwen 4:28pm October 3, 2012)

Most of the "parties" I go to nowadays are baby showers! I did go to a friend's Halloween party about 3 years ago. It's fun to see how some folks go all out on their costumes--there were some real winners at the last party.
(G S Moch 4:44pm October 3, 2012)

The parties my friends and I have - are still pretty wild, we like to let loose once in a while :-)
(Stacy Novack 4:54pm October 3, 2012)

It has been awhile since I last went to a party... I am surprised at how rowdy some of them could get... Happy October!
(Colleen Conklin 5:07pm October 3, 2012)

I normally don't go to Halloween parties. I don't know anyone who has them. (shrug) The last one I attended I went as Lady Godiva so that will tell you something. :) I do like to dress up but most of the people we know just don't get into it. I would love to find a group of people to have that kind of fun with though. I am going to go check out this book now and add it to my to read list asap. I liked the tease for sure.
(Patti Paonessa 5:18pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't been to a Halloween party in the last few years. They are always fun! The last one I went to was for all our friends little kiddos. My friend, her sister, and their mother spent two weeks with the decorating...it was awesome. Full-sized witches, coffin with ghoulie, full handpainted graveyard wall mural, ghosts, spookie music and lots of beautiful decorations and food, including a beautifully decorated haunted house cake made by one of the mom's. Then they had a pumpkin decorating contest, pinata, and bonfire with spooky stories. It was one to remember and I enjoyed some of the best carameled apples I've ever had in my life! Kids wore such cute costumes and I still have the memories and a few photos.
I love the cover for your Halloween short stories book...it's just too cool, and I'm guessing because you're listed as the second author on the cover Rachel, that yours is the 2nd sexy picture of the embracing couple (that ought to grab some readers)! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
(Linda Luinstra 5:23pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't been to many Halloween parties. The last one was a few years ago at my college when I was a freshman. It was alright. I prefer watching the local elementary school costume parades. The kids are cute in their costumes.
(Chelsea Knestrick 5:42pm October 3, 2012)

I'm not going to any parties this month but it sounds like everyone is going to have good times!
(Elizabeth Haney 5:56pm October 3, 2012)

I have not attended many parties as of late, although there was a time when we dressed up and danced until our feet felt like they wanted to fall off LOL Now my parties tend to be on FB and living vicariously watching my son have the fun out,but hey I am still getting to giggle. Hope you ahve some spooky fun!
(Denise Zaky 6:03pm October 3, 2012)

i love this time of year , colors outside , decorating and the chance you can be whatever you want to be..not to mention the sweets..i would really love to win...thanks a bunch
(Kimberly Hoefs 6:34pm October 3, 2012)

I love Halloween... it gives me an excuse to have a horror movie fest & eat LOTS of candy... LOL!!!
(Terri Quick 6:46pm October 3, 2012)

The only parties that I go to are family birthday parties. We
do have one at the end of the month for baby sister, and two
of my great nieces. We have them all at the same time. It
usually gets pretty wild with my little sister but its a fun
time.
(Gail Hurt 7:18pm October 3, 2012)

No parties , I use to dress up and go out with friends . But friends move and things change. Now I watch the kids dress up and have fun, I enjoy that also.
(Deb Pelletier 7:27pm October 3, 2012)

no plans so far this year :(
(Teri Brittin 7:29pm October 3, 2012)

I totally agree that Hallowen has become a sexy holiday for adults. I'll be
going to a friend's Halloween party and there is always someone there
that suprises me.

it's my favorite month!!!can't wait to read!!!
(Jennifer Beck 7:48pm October 3, 2012)

Anything to please my man!
(Sandra Kingsbury 7:50pm October 3, 2012)

I've never had the pleasure of going to a Halloween party. It's not because I didn't want to go or haven't been asked. It's due to the fact that the person I was with at the time was a party-pooper, and didn't enjoy dressing up and going to a party. They just didn't enjoy the idea. I always thought it would be fun, because I felt that this was the one day of the year that a person could dress up any way they wanted to, and pretend to be someone they either always wanted to be, or would like to be, and get away with it. Nobody would pass judgement on them, at least to their face!! lol Now I'm getting to that age where it's getting to be too much trouble to think about getting all dressed up to go to a party, and with health problems to boot, it's almost more trouble than what it's worth!! I also live in a new area now, and all of my friends live over 200 miles away. That's another problem. If you have an invitation this year, I hope you have a great time!! Have a Happy Halloween!!
(Peggy Roberson 8:01pm October 3, 2012)

it's been ages since I've been to a halloween party. once I got out of the child years, dressing up became more of a pain than not (though wasn't so bad during college). nowdays I'm content handing out candy to the little ones & enjoying them being dressed up.
(d Kenney 8:24pm October 3, 2012)

I miss Halloween parties! Since the twins were born, Halloween consists of trick-or-treating or a bonfire. But, I wouldn't change it for anything! I just live vicariously threw my books.
(Karen Prentice 8:31pm October 3, 2012)

huh. I'd say that I never known when someone might surprise me, party or no party! But I do think many people feel freer at Halloween or other costume parties. I don't know whether that's more glorious (free there) or more sad
9freedom rare).
(Mary Ann Dimand 8:45pm October 3, 2012)

I generally host the parties. You'd be amazed how well food
and people work for a successful party.
(Karin Anderson 8:52pm October 3, 2012)

We celebrated last Halloween with a group of friends in Salem, MA. No plans for this year.
(Mary C 8:52pm October 3, 2012)

Looks and sounds great..
(Holly Vanderhule 8:54pm October 3, 2012)

My halloween party consists of answering the door for 30 kids that we usually get Halloween night. I just love the younger kiddies and toddlers. My grandson (2 1/2 and lives with me) has made these last 2 very fun...Think this year will be even better...

Thanks for the giveaway..I have added this book to my To Read list!
(Kimberley Coover 9:03pm October 3, 2012)

I just returned from the most magnificent wedding I have ever attended. My son is 27 and its that time where many of his friends are choosing marriage. He, himself, is engaged and hopes to marry next year. Two more weddings to go this year...and then his next year! OMG!
(Susan Coster 9:36pm October 3, 2012)

I will be attending my cousin's bridal shower. I know no one there. The theme for the bridal shower is Tea Time. I don't even know what to buy for the shower. I have less than 25 days to get something and I have nothing to wear. Stressing Here!!!

After that I will need to fly up to San Francisco for her wedding in January. I'm prepare for the Wedding just not the Bridal Shower.
(Kai Wong 9:51pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't been to a Halloween Party for about 22 yrs, lol. No parties for
me. Just did a bd party though at Chuck E Cheese for my daughter's 29th
bd. Interesting but we had a good time!!!
(Vicki Hancock 9:55pm October 3, 2012)

I haven't gone to a Halloween party for many years butwhen I did I remember going one year as a witch complete with a greenish face and warts & a built up nose made out of face putty. Soo much fun.
(Christine Schultz 9:57pm October 3, 2012)

I love Halloween and we decorate every year. The neighborhood kids love
it, we are the house to visit every year.
(Ann Sheiring 10:23pm October 3, 2012)

I honestly don't go to many parties. However, I would love to go to a Halloween party where there's a ton of drinking and crazy costumes. It's just hard to make tight nit group of friends when you are constantly moving around in the military.
(Kristin Bingham 11:00pm October 3, 2012)

I have not been to a party since I worked 33 years ago. I have worked from home all these years. So cannot really comment on that but want to be entered to win.
(Jane Squires 1:19am October 4, 2012)

It's been a while but I do remember dressing up as a with (original!!) and having a really great time with my future husband LOL
(Barbara Hanson 8:22am October 4, 2012)

Wow, I'm overwhelmed by all the comments. You guys are great!!! I'm so happy to see so many parties, but it also makes me a little sad that there are so many who've never experienced a crazy one. :) But, hey, as long as there is still breath, there's still time. I hope to get back to each of you before the weekend is over, so please, keep the comments coming!
(Rachel Firasek 9:06am October 4, 2012)

I love surprises!
(Roxana Perez 9:31am October 4, 2012)

Not many formal parties in my life lately.. but my mom and dad onced dressed up as Sonny & Cher in their 60's...
(Cate Sparks 9:33am October 4, 2012)

I've actually never been to a Halloween party---but I do remember one year when I was in my early twenties that I dressed up and went to all my friends houses trick or treating for drinks---what a hoot--I had a great time.
(Sue Farrell 10:14am October 4, 2012)

I don't really attend parties anymore, unless it's to accompany my child to
one. I did enjoy a few when I was in my early twenties, though!
(Debbie Burdeen 10:25am October 4, 2012)

My Halloween is all about my kids. I spend the holiday taking them trick or treating and going to a kids party. :)
(Rhonda Dennis 10:50am October 4, 2012)

Hi Rach,
I don't really party anymore...but I used to:)Just stopped in to show a little support for my author friend...I'm definitely getting Halloween Heat II...sounds like a yummy read.
(Kay Dee Royal 2:02pm October 4, 2012)

I love a good Halloween party! I stopped attending for a while, but now that I have kids, the fun is back on!
(Melissa Maringer 2:58pm October 4, 2012)

Long ago I went to a Halloween party and had a great time. I would love to go to one again.
(Rita Wray 3:20pm October 4, 2012)

The parties that you have been to sound much more fun than the parties I have attended!!
(Christine Mead 3:32pm October 4, 2012)

Love to party. Haven't been to one like that in a long time.
(Marian Lanouette 4:41pm October 4, 2012)

I love all kinds of social parties, but the Halloween ones are special because of the added thrill of putting together something unique!
(Debra Simning-Chapman 4:56pm October 4, 2012)

A fabulous read for Halloween. Most parties I attend tend to be pretty subdued affairs.
(Mary Preston 10:14pm October 4, 2012)

Sure, we enjoy Hallowe'en parties. Some people always dress as spooky characters - vampire, mummy, ghost etc. Others are the sexy nun, the cowgirl or a book character like Brother Cadfael. We've had Miss Haversham from Great Expectations and Dr. Jekkyl and Father Ted. We sit around and chat and enjoy good company and interesting food.
Once I even went as the Stock Market. I wore a blue dress that was high at one side of the hem and low at the other. Sharp drops out of the blue, I said....
(Clare O'Beara 5:15am October 5, 2012)

I am surprised too about how big Halloween has become. That was said, it
always been big in our family. My mom always made our costumes so then
I made my kids'. The year my daughter wanted to be an owl almost
stumped me, but I finally figured it out! I almost miss that stuff. 😏
(Penny Mettert 3:53pm October 6, 2012)

Growing up I thought everyone was celebrating my birthday - yes, I was born on Halloween!
(P Noda 5:22pm October 7, 2012)

Halloween is such a fun holiday.
