Ann B. Harrison | Plotter Verses Pantster

I envy people that can plot every chapter of their book before they start, seriously I do. My best writing buddy does this and I have to say I'm in awe of her skills. RED
HOT I've tried to do the character wheel, goal motivation and conflict to help me out but it doesn't work for me.

I tend to go for walks in the early morning with a germ of an idea rolling around in my brain. If I'm lucky it will simmer away nicely until there is something to work with. It might be one sentence or a name. I wrote my first rural romance from seeing a sign on a fence naming the station if surrounded.

That is when I sit down and my fingers start racing over the keys. If I'm lucky it will flow nicely. Some days I have to literally pull the words out as I go, some days the words pour out.

With RED HOT, it was the location that first struck me. I had a trip to San Francisco and fell in love with the coast road. It took my breath away. I knew I had to write a story set in that area. I let it sit for a while and before I knew it, Red was knocking at the inside of my head. Once I started writing it came together quite fast and I didn't see the outcome of the romance until it was almost at the end of the story.

Total pantser through and through. Even my characters tell me what to say.

If you've thought about writing do you think you'd plot and plan or would you do it by the seat of your pants? One commenter will win their choice of Ann's books

Re: Ann B. Harrison | Plotter Verses Pantster

I am in awe of J K Rowling' s Harry Potter books. It's obvious that she
plotted out all the books.

I have no creativity, so I haven't thought much about writing. Remembering my school days, I'm sure I'd do some sort of outline at the start and have points that I would definitely want to include. I think that there would be elements that come up naturally in the process so some of it would be pantser type stuff.

Red sounds like an interesting hero. First the name red and he drives a motorcycle, yet he's a shy scientist.

It wonders around in my head then it's write and rewrite, write an rewrite, delete, write and rewrite.

delete wonders insert wanders

...looks good.

I like to plan things out normally... so I guess if I tried to write a book... it would be planned out...

I have never thought of writing a book, but if I did I would be the type to plot it out. I used to be a programmer and I always flowed large projects out before I started programming!

I think I would write by the seat of my pants because if I would think about it
I would be changing it every minute or so
(Ava Curtis 3:17pm February 15, 2013)

Would write by the seat of my pants. Just get it out there, can always change things as needed later on.

Thank you for the giveaway this books sounds fun to read!

I think I am a planner, but that can get to be ocd - looking for perfection, going back and editing which would only end up with very little to show for all the work that went into it.

For normal day to day life, I have to plan and plot everything but if I were writing
a story I really have to just go with the flow of inspiration. I can never write
something thats planned out. I write a lot of poetry and thats usually how it goes.
And currently I am having the hugest writers block right now. LOL! Thank you for the
giveaway!

I'd probably plot and plan the story all out. Probably because I tend to like to be organized. I know it would all flow easily after I had the setting, basic story idea for inspiration, etc. I've always enjoyed news, trivia, and reading. The only writing I've done are long letters to friends and relatives, poetry, and essays done years ago in high school. I think it would be enjoyable to be a writer, and I know a lot of time, effort and work goes into a book.
(Linda Luinstra 4:44pm February 15, 2013)

I like to be organized so I would plan the story all out and then would probably write and rewrite until I was satisfied.
(Joanne Balinski 4:52pm February 15, 2013)

I think I'd start out with a plan. I'm not sure how long that would last.
(Cheryl McEwen 7:46pm February 15, 2013)

I would definitely plot and plan. I like to keep things organized.
(Bonnie H 9:03pm February 15, 2013)

I think I would plot each chapter. I don't anything without making a list first.
(Beth Melito 10:03pm February 15, 2013)

I would be a fly by the seat of my pants writer for sure. Then I would go
crazy trying to get it all straight later. Thanks for sharing and for the chance
to win.
(Patti Paonessa 11:16pm February 15, 2013)

I am kind of half and half. I need kind of a general direction to keep on
track. Otherwise, the pacing goes to heck and they meander along. It also
leaves room for the characters to take the reins and rush off where they
want. Can you tell I'm a wishy washy, both ways are good Libra? :)
(Penny Mettert 3:02am February 16, 2013)

I'd have to plot like crazy or I'd just ramble on.
(Mary Preston 5:01am February 16, 2013)

iam not sure-i have always wanted to write-its been so long-raising family-other emergency situations no time for myself-i envy persons with a great gift of writing.
(Jackie Morris 11:52am February 16, 2013)

I'd never beable to write a book. I just can't write. I seldom even write letters. I do love to read a good romance though.
(Carol Woodruff 12:45pm February 16, 2013)

I start with the germ of an idea and if it's a very good idea and the characters come to life, they they take over and tell me what happens. But I do need a general outline of where my story is going. That helps me steer matters and drop hints or decide which character is best to end up with whom.
(Clare O'Beara 1:24pm February 16, 2013)

I have to plot and plan but from time to time, I sometimes goes with the seat of my pants and then go backward to make sure that the plot and plan makes sense.
(Kai Wong 2:39pm February 16, 2013)

I've tried both methods, and only a mix of the two works for me. I plot out the characters and set up the basic storyline, but then all bets are off and I simply let it rip. Of course, short stories are the best I've been able to author, so maybe I need some changes to my style.
(Donna Holmberg 8:23pm February 16, 2013)

I'm a big list maker so it would be plot and plan!
(Susan Dyer 8:41am February 17, 2013)

Planning ahead except for food isn't really in my nature.
I'm more of a seat of the pants person who leaves get lost
time and doesn't mind if I'm late, which often happens. I
don't wear a watch so I am less attached to the clock. I
write down phrases and interesting words and then go back
and find ways to incorporate them into my poems, journals
and ever present starts to new stories.
(Alyson Widen 2:21pm February 17, 2013)

I do everything "by the seat of my pants". I positively hate plans and schedules.
