Sandi Shilhanek | Household Chores Or Reading?

pinterestgoodreadstwitterfacebook

When I sat down to write this blog I really had no idea what to write about! All I could think of was the zillion and one things I had on my to do list. There were the normal household chores that tend to get put off until the weekend, and I had to remember to hit the vet’s office for my older dog’s medicine so she could jump on the bed more easily, and perhaps not have those nighttime potty accidents as she sleeps.

Of course what I really wanted to do was read. I had started the final book in Carly Phillips Corwin Course trilogy, Lucky Break, and was desperate to find out how the series ended. What to do?

Ahh….do a chore read a chapter. Do another chore read another chapter. Do another chore read another chapter. See the pattern? Would it work I wondered? Would I get in a cleaning frenzy and clean more than I read? Would I hit a good part and read more than I cleaned? Was a balance possible?

Quite happy to report that while I still have to clean bathrooms, the majority of the other chores are done. The laundry is washed and put away, and the socks even matched! Lucky Break is finished, and I’m staring at my shelves pondering the next choice.

Do you reward yourself for getting a chore accomplished? If so how? Are you a better domestic diva than I am, and do the chores during the week so they don’t pile up for the weekend? If you do how do you manage your time? Last but not least are you ignoring the domestic things in favor of a great book? If so which book?

Until next week happy page turning!

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | Household Chores Or Reading?

Sandi, I prefer the "do a chore, read a chapter" routine and it does produce results! :D
Have a great week!

In theory it's a great idea but I find myself getting lost in the story and forget about the chores.

Sandi...great topic!!
I'm a HUGE fan of delayed gratification. I can't settle into my book until I am finished with ALL the chores, I'm afraid. I was forced into a schedule of chores and other things several years ago and that schedule helps me slot the reading time in that keeps me happy!!!

I agree with Cindy. I have everything done during the day then in the evening I curl up with a good book and read until I either fall asleep or remember to go to bed.

Do a chore or read a book? Are you serious? Reading a book wins hands down! However, I only have myself to worry about and live in a condo so I no longer have the chores to do that most of you have. But I am like Theresa, my days are for things needing done and my nights are for reading!

Oh, I'm definitely a "read my book first" person! lol I've found Stephanie Laurens...not sure HOW I have missed her over the years...and have all of the Cynster series...that being said...I feel like I don't have to and can't do anything BUT read until I'm completely through! Love your blogs!
(Tammy Faris 8:45pm October 4, 2009)

Tammy, thanks for the pick me up regarding my blogs.

I'm so jealous of all of you who can put the chores first! That's way too hard, and not fun!
(Sandi Shilhanek 9:07pm October 4, 2009)

Since I live alone and don't have to worry about what my place looks like until I get tired of it, I just read until I'm ready to do something with my house. I might clean a room up (sort of ) in between books.
(Debbie Beverley 9:39pm October 4, 2009)

Don't worry Sandi - I'm with you! Of course, any reading I do is almost always at night, after the kids and David are asleep (or sometimes lunch at work). I very rarely read during the day with them home - they are too distracting. And who wants that while reading a good book?

On the other hand, I don't get much cleaning done. Living with 3 slobs just doesn't rev me up to clean, when I'm the only one doing it. I get most of the basics done (sort of) and the rest gets left until I feel like doing it (which doesn't seem to be often). I'll be on vacation in 2 weeks and plan on doing some major clean up in here, since the girls will be in school and David at work. Wish me luck, because a book just might call to me more . . . .
(Amanda Reeder-erdly 11:27pm October 4, 2009)

Reading usually wins over cleaning for me.
(Pam Nolan 8:29am October 5, 2009)

No choice here; reading will win always; chores will still be there tomorrow. Kidding of course, laundry meals lunches they all have to be done but I always find some time to read each day
(Diane Sadler 10:57am October 5, 2009)

Reading always comes first. I live with my son and his family, so my chores are few.
(Patsy Hagen 12:08pm October 5, 2009)

I love to read but cleaning takes precedence since I have allergies. I sneeze at everything so I am constantly vacuuming, dusting, picking up clutter, etc. It helps to keep the house clean so my allergies aren't so bad.

I usually read at night in bed before I go to sleep.
(Michele Rioli 1:22pm October 5, 2009)

Reading wins, hands down, but of course, there always comes the time when my hubby won't wait any longer for supper, so I must put my book down. . .

I have been known to cook and clean while reading at the same time. The kids are gone, it's just the two of us now, so once I do get some cleaning done it usually stays that way, at least for a while.

I have allergies, too, but I figure if I stir the dust up, it will only bother me more. . .
(Donna Breitkreuz 1:53pm October 5, 2009)

That sounds like a good idea but, like many, I end up getting lost in the book. I've come to accept the fact that I can only do so many chores before I need to stop & read for my sanity! Of course, even that is easier said than done with a two year old in the house! Good thing for me that when mommy reads Alyssa likes to grab one of her books and "read" too. Yay for reading!!!
(Dawn Detkowski 2:24pm October 5, 2009)

Hmmmmmmm, good question. I like to put some laundry in the washer and then sit down to read. At least I'm accomplishing one of the things that needs to be done!! But sometimes my conscience will bother me and I have to put the book down and go do something else that REALLY needs to be done. But I'm either at the computer and reading a book many times during the day and squeeze in some cleaning when I can. But don't plan on being able to eat off of my floors!!!
(Carol Norton 4:00pm October 5, 2009)

Carol, I like your attitude. . .
(Donna Breitkreuz 6:32pm October 5, 2009)

Hi Sandi! Better late than never, right? I typically spread my time between reading and household chores, but this past weekend ended up sneaking in more reading time to finish UNLEASHED, the third book in Jami Alden's "Gemini Men" series. Heavens, did I ever love this series. Sadly, now that I've rushed to finish it, there's a bit of a letdown going on.

Now I have some housework to make up for as the week goes on!
(Laurie Damron 9:08am October 7, 2009)

Well my PC is in my greatroom which is near the kitchen and the laundry. I try to do a little fun or work on PC and mix it with TV. Chores and
reading during commercial breaks usually get done or during David Letterman's monologue....lol If I am home alone less chores get done and more reading gets done. :)
(Joy Hoormann 10:44am October 7, 2009)

If the book is good, nothin will shake me not tornado, earthquake or fire, only "Mom!" That is why I don't start a book until most of my chores are under control.
(Judy Hendrix 10:10pm October 10, 2009)

Hi Sandi!
Was wonderful to have a few minutes with you in Orlando!
If I'm reading or writing the whole house can fall in around me and I wouldn't even smell the mold and dust! LOL
Thank goodness for an understanding husband who knows how to use a dust mop and do laundry!
