Sandi Shilhanek | Great Technological Advances for This Reader

This week I conquered one of the technological challenges that has had me frustrated for months. I couldn’t be more proud of myself, and thought what better way to celebrate than to share that achievement with those of you who read my blog.

In case you don’t know I’m a bookaholic! It’s an addiction that I really don’t want to find a recovery program for. I always have a book going that is either print or on my Kindle, plus an audio book either on my IPOD or my MP3 player.

Why you might ask do you need both an IPOD and an MP3 player? The answer is somewhat simple. When I got introduced to audio books I thought I could put everything on my IPOD, then I discovered downloading books from my local library, and discovered they weren’t compatible with the IPOD. Therefore I had to find an inexpensive MP3 player.

I did that quite well, and was happy until I ran out of memory. Was discussing that with my husband, and he showed me that my MP3 player had a memory card slot. So I gladly inserted said memory card into said slot, but have been unable to figure out how to put the audios onto the memory card.

This week I was given a great gift…a memory card reader. I stuck my MP3 memory card into it, and voila discovered I could download the library books straight onto the memory card. Insert the memory card back into the player and listen! If overjoyed was a crayon in the box that’s the color I would be now!

So I happily downloaded not one, not two, but the maximum number of books my library allows checked out at once in the download side of things, which is ten! What that means is that my audio TBL (to be listened) pile is growing, and I couldn’t be happier.

Have you recently discovered yourself able to do something that you had previously found frustrating? Want to share your thrill of discovery with me and anyone who might be reading this week's contribution?

Until next week...

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | Great Technological Advances for This Reader

That is still too complicated and frustrating for me - I'll stick to reading the actual book!

I haven't tried using an MP3 player yet. Glad to hear it works for you. There is hope for me yet..
(Marilyn Warner 11:08am February 22, 2009)

I enjoy the feel and touch of a printed book. There is nothing that can replace that reality.
(Sharon Berger 11:14am February 22, 2009)

I will look into this eventually. Probably once I figure out how to put music on the Ipod I got a year ago for Xmas . . .

Glad you figured it out. Its so tough for us technology challenged people. Sometimes, its just easier to find a teenager. They all seem to know how to work this stuff!
(Amanda Reeder-erdly 11:20am February 22, 2009)

Congrats on the major accomplishment Sandi!

Today I will be trying to conquer a backup drive. The thing is a major memory hog, but I'm sure that can be fixed! Wish me luck!
(Tina Sporer 11:29am February 22, 2009)

I haven't touched the whole IPOD vs MP3 player issue yet. But I did at least get a CD player that was MP3 compatible... I'm just starting to venture into this area so maybe I'll have some accomplishments soon!
(Debbie Wiley 11:39am February 22, 2009)

Sandi you are amazing! I'm still trying to learn to use my new phone. I do however jump up and down and scream when I bowl well lol.
(Ilene Pedersen 11:49am February 22, 2009)

Sandi, you just amaze me! I have an Ipod Touch but can't figure out how to work the e-reader app. Maybe you can do a blog about this? Please? LOL
This week I learned how to put a background and html code on my blog.
(Sari Nichols 12:02pm February 22, 2009)

I belong to the Harlequin book Challenge and was delighted when Katherine T. explained how to show a book cover. So now when I talk about a book I can show it too.
(Joyce Mandle 12:56pm February 22, 2009)

I've just been impressed with myself that I've got an MP3 player! A book friend commented on how she will go on walks either listening to an audio book or a podcast of a health show. I'd like to do the same thing on the elliptical. Maybe that will accutally be an incentive to excercise! My sister does audiobooks for her work commute.

So for I've gone on to the library website and found the books online (print not audio) but I didn't figure out how to download it. At work I have access to a different library system. It sounded as if their audiobooks come on an MP3 player unique to that book.

How does your library set a limit on the time? Does the book just lock up when it's expired?

I've been looking into the e-readers. Right now I'm thinking I may just keep an eye on small laptop computers. They keep getting smaller and soon I should be able to get one that's book size.

I'm still a little leery of ebooks. Years ago I was buying up ebooks like there was no tomorrow. I tried being a good girl and having a back-up incase of computer problems. But a couple of the books I bought from Amazon didn't let me make a back-up. Then my computer crashed. The books I had a CD backup of could be reloaded. Not the amazon books. Do any of you run into that problem? I mean eventually all technological things will go kaput.
(Lynda Smith 1:05pm February 22, 2009)

I do all my ebooks on my laptop. I am a big NPR listener so I don't do books in my car. I do download podcasts onto my computer. I downloaded a CD to my cell phone and I just started using my GPS that I got for my birthday January 7 this week. It was easy to use, but I didn't try because I thought it wouldn't be easy. I am a very recent convert to ebooks. I like print better, but there are so many books that don't make it into print that are every bit as good.
It must be one of those senior things.

Your blog is food for thought as it is every week.

I am still into print books. Maybe if I had an e-reader it would be different. I don't like to set at t he computer to read, so I alway grab my print books, so I can relax on the couch to read.
(Gail Hurt 1:26pm February 22, 2009)

I find most things more difficult then reading a book, even iwth a magnifier.
(Lindy Smth 1:52pm February 22, 2009)

Trying to figure out my Ebookwise Reader was a lesson in frustration, I am so not a tech girl, but I hung in there and finally the whole concept just clicked. Now I always have new books to add and carry it with me when ever I leave the house.
(Cathy MacDonald 2:00pm February 22, 2009)

I used to listen to a ton of audio books when I commuted. I have noticed that our library too allows you to download books, but I am not sure yet how this works.

Thanks for the great info!
(Natalie Wyant 3:31pm February 22, 2009)

my technologie learn this year have been through shelfari. I learned I can create a book there, I can create a cover so I can change some of my blank covers to the book cover. I also learned to make a widget that I have the I'm reading shelf selected then put it on display under what I'm reading on my profile page at eharlequin. So now it doesn't matter if I have 1 or 10 books there it takes up the same amount of room.
(Christa Runge 3:50pm February 22, 2009)

no I haven't done anything that frustating as you. Congratulations Sandi.
(Maggie Roso 4:07pm February 22, 2009)

I like the feel and heft of my books too
much.
(Beatrice Chan 4:56pm February 22, 2009)

Hi Sandi,
I haven't learned any new technology recently! Must be what happens when you retire! When I was working you just pick up new things at work because you either have to or someone shows you something! I miss that! Most of technology is just sitting down looking at the instructions, then trying to follow said instructions & eventually it works!! How is that for a learning curve!

Due partly to income I have not explored any type of ereader. I love holding a book! If I did a lot of traveling an ereader would be a big bonus instead of carrying books with me!! When I am driving wether long or short trips I prefer to listen to music rather than listen to a book. I'm afraid I might get so caught up in the book I might do something stupid!!! Again, I love holding the book & hearing it my way. Old-fashioned works best at times, for me anyway.

Everyone enjoy the rest of Sunday!

Good subject that gives all readers something to think about.
(Donna McClure 5:19pm February 22, 2009)

I want everyone to know that I'm very not techie! If I can overcome some of these challenges I think everyone can. When I got my IPOD it took me 2 hours to figure
out how to get it set up so that it would flow from one item to the next! Like Amanda said I was doing the snoopy dance over it, and my young teen came in and
said what are you doing? I explained this story to him, and he was like you should have just asked me! He so didn't revel in my joy!

Lynda, my library does a 3 week check out for audio books that you download. At the end of that time, the license expires, and they no longer work on your
computer. However, if you have transferred them to a MP3 player they will continue to play past the checkout time. I did learn today that there are 2 different
types of audio downloads that libraries use. My library uses Overdrive, and as long as I have either burned to CD(if the license permits that) or transferred to my
MP3 player it continues to be good after the license on the computer expires. However, if your library uses NetLibrary once, the license expires it doesn't allow you
to continue to play even if you have transferred to a different device.

Christa, I want to know about the Widgets. You're going to have to give a lesson or tell me where you found the info at Harelquin! I saw that on your blog and was
totally jealous!

Cynthya, I hear that the Sony can be hard to tackle. It took my techie son 2 hours to figure out his, but now he loves it! He says it's really easy to use.

Donna, and others who hopefully forgive me for not mentioning you by name...not everyone is ready for technology, and that's fine. I just want everyone to know
that I really don't get technology, and if I can make it work, then the chances are high that all of you can too, and you shouldn't be afraid of it.

Hope everyone has a great week!
(Sandi Shilhanek 5:50pm February 22, 2009)

I burn all my audio books from the library.I have a CD player that is MP3/WMA compatible, and I also transfer my books to my MP3 player so I can listen at work.I back up everything.
(Jackie Jones 6:17pm February 22, 2009)

Sandi
Do you want the lesson here or through email?
(Christa Runge 6:35pm February 22, 2009)

I think I need to check into the audio books at my library. I have a MP3 with a card and I never thought of that- You're a genius:-) thanks for the idea!
(Gail Siuba 6:45pm February 22, 2009)

Congratulations, Sandi! Your library sounds awesome.
(Mary Matthews 6:59pm February 22, 2009)

I am glad to hear that... wish I knew how to do things like that. Just recently someone gave me a IPOD... I so am not that advanced... They had to load the songs for me and I still dont know how to work it myself.
Cindy Mac
(Cynthia Mclelland 7:10pm February 22, 2009)

Christa, I'll email you!

Gail, thanks for calling me a genius! Makes my day!

Cindy Mac, I be if you sat down and did it you'd be surprised how easy your IPOD is to load. Itunes can be a dangerous place!

Sandi
(Sandi Shilhanek 7:56pm February 22, 2009)

Just had to take a moment and say that thanks to Christa I have a widget on my Harlequin Challenge page! Her directions were spot on, and while it took
me a moment to fully understand them I did get it done! Technology better beware I might be on a roll!
(Sandi Shilhanek 8:51pm February 22, 2009)

i am lucky to answer my email, me and techy stuff just dont get along. i dont even carry a cell phone! have fun with your new toy!
(Becky Kinkead 9:03pm February 22, 2009)

I haven't tried the MP3 Player yet. Just about 3 months ago, I figured out how to download music to my husband's Ipod for him. I will only sit for so long in front of the computer to read some e-books, I still like the printed format better.
(Becky Ward 9:40pm February 22, 2009)

Congratulations, Sandi! Given how technologically challenged I am, I'm seriously impressed!

I have a Palm that I love for ebooks, but there are some books that I just prefer to hold in my hands! I am very intrigued by the Kindle2, however, and might consider putting it on my Christmas list sometime if the cost goes down.
(Laurie Damron 10:47pm February 22, 2009)

I know how you feel , I was totally frustrated and keep going on line to learn more about the ipod and mp3 but now I have mp3 and new bigger 16G on the way , can't get enough to read and I can do mp3 at desk. Technology got to love it ...or not
(Cheri Holt 11:01pm February 22, 2009)

I am sooo not technologically inclined. I'm always afraid I'm going to mess something up on my computer, and can't get it back how it's supposed to be. I also get frustrated very easily and give up. It drives my daughter nuts. She tells me "Mom, you're a smart woman, but when you sit down at the computer you let yourself get stupid". And she's right.
Last week my monitor went dead. No power at all. I tried everything I could think of, including checking the connections, to no avail. I couldn't get ahold of my computer guy, so I had no choice. I went to Best Buy, got a new one, and..ta dah!...HOOKED IT UP MYSELF! And even better, IT WORKS! I know it's a simple thing for some people, but I was so proud I called everyone I knew to brag. LOL
(Janet Lewis 12:48pm February 23, 2009)

I recently bought a Sony E-Reader and I am both happy n Frustrated with it. I figured out how to get the e-books that were on my computer to load on to my reader and that makes me happy. However, I can't get my computer to connect with Sony's e-book store so I can get my free book. I have Norton 360 on my computer and I can't get the program to recognise the e-book software program as something that is allowed to interact with the internet. That makes me fruatrated to no end. *Sigh*
(Marcia Lunsford 1:19pm February 23, 2009)

Wow I am immpressed with all the tec you all have conquered!

I was immpressed when I figured out how to import my shelfari shelf to goodreads without having to do each book seperate! I uploaded all my books.
(Linda Elliott 3:46pm February 23, 2009)

I am not very technological, I always have to ask my son how to work something. He can figure anything out that technological.
(Gail Hurt 4:06pm February 23, 2009)

I'd rather read a book. I guess I like to
stick with what I already know.
(Bridget Hopper 5:05pm February 23, 2009)

Janet, going and picking out a monitor is a big deal! Congrats on getting it set up! Marcia, I wish I could help you with the Sony, but I have a
Kindle, and my son hasn't even let me see his Sony since he unpacked it! Linda, I didn't know I could import my Shelfari to my good reads.
Hmmm...going to have to check into that! Bridget, I still love my real books too!
