David Deutsch sits down with Fresh Fiction to talk about MURDER.COM and the strong mystery solving duo of Max and Imogen (Ginny).

Jen: Thank you so much for joining us on Fresh Fiction.

David: Thank you for having me. I’m excited to be here! Jen: MURDER.COM is the beginning of the Max Slade Thriller series. Max is an interesting character. Intelligent, sarcastic, and determined, and Ginny, his girlfriend, complements him perfectly. They read each other well, and I love how they work together. Even though it’s the Max Slade Thriller series, Ginny really holds her own in this partnership. Did you initially start out with this strong partnership at that the core of MURDER.COM and if so what crime-solving couples inspired you?

David: I actually did go into it with the idea of a strong couple. I wanted the feel of a modern day film noir with quick exchanges, humor and a good mystery to solve. But, more importantly, I wanted the female lead, in this case Ginny, to be Max’s equal. I would argue that at some points in the novel she’s even a little more than his equal.

As a kid I loved the show Moonlighting. I loved the way David and Maddie interacted. The quick wit, the snappy dialogue, the way they complemented each other even though they often exchanged verbal barbs. I think I wanted to capture that spirit in some way.

Jen: Without giving away the plot, I want to say that there are quite a few twists and turns to the story. Do you plot first and then write or just jump into the story and see where it takes you?

David: That’s a great question. I usually have an idea for the general plot of the story but all of the twists and turns come organically. I often find the story leads me into uncharted territory more often than not. And, I like it that way!

Jen: There’s so much to enjoy in MURDER.COM, but what I really like is how quickly I was pulled into the story. You’ve a talent for jumping right into the mystery and keeping the pace lively. Part of this is because of snappy dialog between characters. If you could pick any actor to read Max and Ginny’s dialog, who would they be and why?

David: I think John Slattery, Roger Sterling of Mad Men fame, would be the quintessential voice of Max. He has a certain delivery that is classy, witty, and self deprecating. That’s how I often hear Max’s dialogue in my mind.

For Imogen (Ginny), I think Michelle Dockery, Lady Mary of Downton Abbey, would be fantastic. Her dry delivery would be a perfect complement to John Slattery’s Max and her posh accent is just spot on! Or, as Ginny would say, “Brilliant!”

Jen: What books are on your nightstand right now?

David: I’m a huge Elmore Leonard fan and I thought that I had read them all but the other day I found one that I had somehow managed to overlook. So, I’m in the middle of UNKNOWN MAN #89.

Jen: Can you give us a sneak peek on Max and Ginny’s next case? What can we look forward to with these two?

David: Max and Ginny have tied the knot and have opened their own PI agency. When a dead body shows up at Delmar Country Club they are brought in to solve the case. What they find are a web of lies, deceit, big money and priceless art. They both still love a good scotch and with a little luck they might be able to catch the killer before one or both of the end up in the morgue.

This has been a blast. Thank you again for having me!

Jen: Thank you so much for joining us!

Re: MURDER.COM, Noir, and Perfect Partnerships

Since I'm still in the process of waking up here, the only
character that comes to mind for me is the Janet Evanovich
character, Stephanie Plum. However, she is actually paired
with 2 different male characters. One is named Ranger, and
the cop's name escapes me at the moment. This book sounds
like it should be not only a bit of a fun read, but a bit of
a page-turner, and I'm looking forward to reading it.
Congratulations on your book!!

Currently, my favorite duo is Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller
from Broadchurch.
(Deb Philippon 8:57am July 13, 2015)

First, congrats on the release David! Looking forward to
reading your book!

I was a big fan of Moonlighting as well :) I also
enjoyed Cagney and Lacey (though not really a "couple"
lol) and, along the same lines, Rizzoli and Isles. Of
course, no crime solving duo discussion would be complete
without Sherlock and Watson :) (in the tv series, Watson
is a woman, does that count? LOL)

Again congrats!!

Holmes and Watson
(Marissa Yip-Young 9:51am July 13, 2015)

Lily and Rule from the World of the Lupi Series by Eileen Wilks
Not only do they show that they work well together when solving mysteries/crimes, but even with the opposing circumstances and difference cultures, they work well to show that they're the perfect couple.
(Lisa L. 11:41am July 13, 2015)

I have to agree with Anne Marie on Castle and Beckett, but I love your noir
angle also. Who doesn't love Nick and Nora??
