Susan Meier | Why I Write About Christmas…
October 3, 2013
Those of you who regularly read my books have probably noticed that I've had a
Christmas story out nearly every year. I love to write Christmas stories. The
entire time I'm working on the book, I'm immersed in a winter wonderland filled
with the scents of pine trees and baking cookies. Tinsel twinkles around me. I
get to choose imaginary trees. Decorate imaginary houses. See the red cheeks and
smiling faces of kids eager for Santa's arrival.
And I'm usually doing it in July!
But there are more than externals that happen around Christmas. There really is
more peace on earth and good will to men. People let down their guards a bit and
open doors for package-laden strangers. Others notice bigger needs and become
secret Santas. And still others need for someone to notice their struggle and
just reach out a hand.
That's what happens in Clark and Althea's story, SINGLE DAD'S CHRISTMAS MIRACLE.
Dreading going home to make peace with her past and her abusive father, Althea
takes the job as Clark Beaumont's son's tutor, fifty miles short of her
destination to earn a little extra cash, but also to get her bearings. She
quickly sees that the little family is struggling. Clark's wife was killed in an
automobile accident and his kids are lonely, longing for motherly love. When she
provides it and Clark's life begins to right again, he finally sees what's been
obvious all along. He likes her. Oh, heck, he more than likes her.
But even though he allowed her to help him, her shame of her past keeps her from
allowing him to return the favor.
Against a backdrop of snow twinkling in moonlight, gaudy wreaths chosen by
Clark's kids and a dog who is too excited to behave, these two don't just have
wounds to be healed. They have choices make and lots of them aren't as easy as
explaining to a four-year-old how Santa gets into your house when you have no
fireplace.
Christmas books are a chance to blend inexhaustible happiness with unbearable
pain and have characters come out on the other side whole, happy, rid of the old
hurts and ready to face the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
THAT'S why I write Christmas stories. There is no season, no holiday, brimming
with such wonderful promise. A chance to warm hearts for sure. But also a chance
to remind us all to count our blessings.
And speaking of blessings we're giving away a few copies of KISSES ON HER CHRISTMAS LIST
, a book that was a 4-1/2 star, top pick from RT magazine the year it was
released!
Just comment below to be entered!
Shannon's Christmas Wish List 1. A gorgeous billionaire to buy her store...enter Rory Wallace—swoon! 2. The magic of Christmas...Rory and his little girl need to know that it still
exists. 3. Willpower...because kissing Rory under the mistletoe would be a Very Bad Idea. Shannon Raleigh can't believe that both Rory Wallace and his little girl dislike
Christmas so much and she's determined to make her favorite season as magical as
possible! But working with handsome Rory every day proves challenging, because
Shannon finds herself longing for Christmas kisses with the man she can never
have.... Happy Reading

Christmas stories bring joy and hope to those who need an exta dose to those who are low on Christmas spirit. I suppose I fall into that category this morning. Without going into detail, this is going to be a pretty bleak Christmas for us. I just had a bombshell dropped on me while I was trying to read and enjoy your posting, and it's pretty hard to stay upbeat and write something positive. As hard as I've tried to do things for others this year, I'm going to have to step it up a notch, and find every Christmas book I can to boost my spirits and push the negativitity to a back burner, where it can sit and stew!! I'm really tired of it!! Have a wonderful Holiday, and I'm looking forward to reading your book!! It sounds like a sweet story that will lift anyone's spirits, including mine!! How I wish the holiday feelings could be sustained the whole year through! I do my best to retain the spirit of the holidays and maintain goodwill toward my fellow human beings. Wow, Congrats on your new book: KISSES ON HER CHRISTMAS LIST. Yes, I love to read Christmas stories. Sometimes it is hard for me because my Mother and Sister both passed away a month before Christmas in 1995. Since then, I am trying to cope and my Dad passed away in 2007. It is only me and my husband so it is mostly just another day for me. I am thankful to GOD and Jesus Christ for saving all of us and that is my main thought around the Holidays. I would love to win and read your new book this Fall before the Holidays! Thank You very much. Cecilia CECE (Cecilia Dunbar Hernandez 8:46pm October 3, 2013)
