Sandi Shilhanek | Tech Lust and a Case of Author Fandom

So yesterday Sara talked about the birthday party she attended. I was lucky enough to attend the same party, and while we didn't talk books we did discuss our phones. We talked about the pros and cons of the latest ones available, and some nice man let me touch his Iphone4. (In case you don't know I usually have a case of new tech gadget lust.)

I did share with a group of my friends that for my birthday last month I bought a new generation Kindle. It arrived yesterday, but due to a Dr. appointment, the party, and my early to bed tendencies I could only get it unpacked and charging. I did manage to also sneak in some time to buy one book. I bought Just One Taste by Louisa Edwards because she's going to be the guest at our book club dinner this week. Unfortunately I won't get it read in time, but I did read and enjoy her debut book, Can't Stand The Heat.

Speaking of Louisa...did you realize you could meet her in person (along with me, and I just know that you're dying to meet me!) at readers'n'ritas being held in the Dallas Ft. Worth area November 12-14?

The readers'n'rita committee has been working hard to bring a conference to attendees that focuses on readers, and allows plenty of time to get intimate with not only Louisa but many other authors. I personally am looking forward to the opportunity to meet Julie Kenner, spend some more time with authors I've previously met like Lauren Willig, Tara Taylor Quinn, and many others!

Are you planning on attending a conference in the near future? If so which one? If not then you really need to think about the awesome deal that readers'n'ritas is. We're going to have so much fun! We'd love to see you there. Oh...besides meeting me who else would you like to meet?

Until next time happy page turning!

I got the New Generation Kindle for my birthday too and it arrived on Tuesday. I'm already loving it!!

Birthdays are fun, no matter how many!
Blessings,

Would love to come to Rita's and Readers, but TX is a bit far for me to come. Let us know how it goes. The need to have a weekend on the east coast:)

I'd like to know how you like your new Kindle. I'm thinking of buying an ereader for my mom, so I'll be asking everyone I know with one what they like/don't like about them.
(Amanda Reeder-erdly 1:25pm September 12, 2010)

B-days still enjoy them! Conferences sound like so much fun... maybe one day I will go to one!

We used to have a little romance conference here in Germany, but it stopped...boohoo. If I were to try and get over to America for a conference, I'd need to win the lottery...hehe!!!

I still love holding a book in my hand. Call me old-fashioned! Have a fun time at the conference! I have never been to one but sure would love to sometime!

I'm thinking of attending the RT in Los Angeles. Don't know when it's going to be since this is my first conference. I'm looking forward to it.

I never see any conferences in Michigan. I don't have a kindle, I like my books, I can read books on my net book but it isn't as much fun. Happy Birthday! Thanks for the contest!

I don't think that I will be able to try to attend one of the conferences until at least year after next. Both due to lack of time and saving for other goals at the moment. I get to live the excitement vicariously though through the descriptions from others.

I hope you enjoy your e-reader as much as I do mine.
Congrats
(Vickie Hightower 3:47pm September 12, 2010)

Love my books,hope I win.

I would love to go to a conference but none of them are held anywhere within a decent driving distance. My hubbie calls me a techie but you wouldn't know it because I don't have any of the latest gadgets. I am the one in the household that hooks everything up and gets it running and keeps it running!

My cell phone is just that: a phone. No flashy extras, just to make a call. I wouldn't have that if it weren't for DH. Everyone else has one now; if I have an emergency, I'll use there's. No e-reader either. I love my books! Give me books! I want to SEE and FEEL my books!
(Cynthia Netherton 5:35pm September 12, 2010)

sounds fun!
(Raelena Pavey 5:59pm September 12, 2010)

I would be very happy to meet any or ALL of my favorite authors. No such luck though.
(Mary Preston 6:02pm September 12, 2010)

I love books but I want a Kindle too.
(Cheryl Lynne 6:38pm September 12, 2010)

I don't have any plans to attend any upcoming conferences, but I would like to someday.
(Jane Cheung 6:51pm September 12, 2010)

Mmm... Beside you I would love to meet Nalini Singh, I love her books.
(Diane Sadler 7:52pm September 12, 2010)

I like the new technology. But, my husband calls it a Barbie Doll. You buy the doll on sale and then you have to buy every thing that goes with it. Our old wireless router is now out of warrenty and doesn't work with the new computer he just bought!
(Karin Tillotson 10:43pm September 12, 2010)

It would be so much fun to
attend a readers conference!
I enjoy work conferences, but
sometimes the workshops can
make you wish you were back at
the office. How exciting it
would be to attend a
conference for fun!
(Jessie OLeary 11:04pm September 12, 2010)

The conferences sound like a lot of fun, but they're not even close to my area. There are too many authors to list here that I'd love to meet. Their writing intrigue me. As for technical gadgets, although they peak my interest, I prefer my good old laptop and my land line. They've been pretty reliable up to now, and I know how to work them, without having too much added information.
(Peggy Roberson 7:36am September 13, 2010)

I would love to attend a readers
conference, but no luck yet. There are
some 5 to 7 hours away, but no luck
getting to one yet. Maybe some day
soon.
(Patricia Barraclough 2:47pm September 13, 2010)

I would love to attend readers
(and writers) conferences. Is
there a way to find out which
are most (handicap)accessible?
When we win the lottery I plan
to travel a LOT. I am lucky in
that we live in an area that
has many fascinating
conventions (a Steam Punk Con
is only one town away from
home) but no local
readers/writers cons I have
been able to discover.
(Diana Troldahl 7:59am September 15, 2010)

Congratulations on making friends with your e-reader. I tend to go to events in town like booksignings put on by indie bookstore or the library. Listening to the authors read their own print and tell about how they chose that direction helps me understand more about the craft and art of writing.
