Matthew Peterson | FROM ANNE RICE TO DEAN KOONTZ
December 21, 2009
I really should be writing the next book in my best-selling and award-winning
Parallel Worlds series, but a little thing like a fire destroying my
house has put a kink in my plans. My new online radio show, The Author Hour: Your
Guide to Fantastic
Fiction, has also consumed most of my time. Soon after the fire, a
representative from VoiceAmerica invited me to be the host of the new
show. Little did I know that when I said yes I would be interviewing the top
fiction authors in the world. In the past two months I've interviewed international best-selling authors like
Anne RiceDean Koontz, Meg Cabot, Terry Pratchett, Diana Gabaldon, Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Terry Brooks, Christopher Paolini, and
Kate DiCamillo. The
list goes on and on. Several of my guests have sold over 100 million books. The
authors on just one of my up-coming episodes have sold a combined total of 3/4
of a billion books. Yeah, just crazy!
One thing I've discovered that has been quite a surprise is that these authors
are extremely humble and pleasant to speak with. Most of them started out as a
nobody, just like most authors who hope that someone will pay attention to
their writing. Some of my guests were living in poverty before they caught
their big break. Most got rejection after rejection. This should bring hope to most new authors who are struggling to make it in the
publishing world. When it all comes down to it, you have to write something
amazing... but a little luck doesn't hurt. Well, to be completely honest, in
this day and age with the deluge of manuscript submissions, luck is almost a
requirement. Perseverance is also a requirement. Knowing the right people who
also know the right people can be helpful too. You can listen to the show anytime at www.TheAuthorHour.com
(my site also includes the transcribed interviews and extra material that
didn't air on the live show). Also, make sure you visit www.ParaWorlds.com to listen
to or read a
sample of my YA fantasy novel, Paraworld Zero. The audio book is a great Christmas gift for
families. Happy holidays everyone, and have a great new year with lots of fun
books!

My dad was a fireman and I know how you feel about your life up in flames. I love reading about interview and the preparation beforehand so you can ask intelligent questions and also the ones no one else will ask, but people want to know anyways. (Alyson Widen 2:58pm December 21, 2009)
I'm a regular reader of your newsletter, so I know of the fire you talk about. I was always very impressed with the way you and your family handled that situation. (LuAnn Morgan 3:27pm December 21, 2009)
Thanks for putting the website up. I'll check it out. (Leni Kaye 4:08pm December 21, 2009)

Fantasy fiction is a great read and a fun way to leave our world behind. Have a great holiday and an even better new year! (Rosemary Krejsa 8:34pm December 21, 2009)
I hope this holiday season is an opportunity for you and your family to heal. As a survivor of Ike; I was deeply disturbed by what a lifechanging event such things turn out to be. There is literally no way for anyone else to even comprehend such shocks. At least with a hurricane, we had some advance warning; there are no warnings or predictions that can prepare anyone for the devastation of a house fire. I was grateful to read that your family was safe. When you can get back to writing again, know that your loyal readers are waiting. (Susan Driskill 9:32pm December 21, 2009)
I nearly lost my home to fire about 10 years ago and even though it didn't burn down, the smoke damage had us living with family for 3 months until all was replaced. I hope you get your home back soon and wish you the best of luck with your writing. Looking forward to reading your novel.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! (Mitzi Hinkey 12:25pm December 22, 2009)
Book sound interesting. Will give it a try. (Kai Wong 2:25am December 22, 2009)
Hope this is a time for healing for you. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! (Joanne Reynolds 6:23am December 22, 2009)
Thanks everyone. It's been almost 6 months since the fire and we're still fighting the insurance company. Since it'll take 6 months to repair the house, we're looking at at least 1 year in a rental home. At least we're all safe. Happy holidays everyone and I hope you enjoy my radio show and book!
