Hello, all y'all at Fresh Fiction. I'm honored that you've asked me to come back
to your site and visit a spell about the newest book in the Spikes & Spurs
series, JUST A COWBOY AND
HIS BABY! It's not exactly a Christmas book but since it ends on a Christmas note, it's
perfect for the holidays. Gemma O'Donnell always wanted to be the first woman to
win the ProRodeo buckle for saddle bronc riding but Kaila Mussell beat her to
the punch on that one. However, she's darn sure got her mind set on being the
second woman to win it so the sexy cowboys on the rodeo circuit can just move
over because a cowgirl has come to town. Trace Coleman doesn't care a lot about the title. He wants the prize money to
buy his dream ranch. But one sexy, determined cowgirl gets in his way every time
he turns around. Since the only way most of you folks know Trace and Gemma might be by their
pictures on the cover of the book (Isn't it just gorgeous with the stars
twinkling in the background? And you did notice that she's wearing red boots,
didn't you?), I thought we'd interview them today. Anyone got questions? Okay, the lady in the Stetson hat on the back row, what's your question darlin'? "Why on earth would someone as petite and cute as Gemma want to ride
bronc's? She could settle down right around Ringgold with her choice of
cowboys." Gemma: First of all thank you for the compliment. I come from a long line of
ranchers and horse trainers. I have three older brothers who can ride anything
with four legs, play anything that has strings on it and I've always been
determined not to let them do something better than I can. And I was not looking
for a cowboy and I dang sure did not have thoughts of settling down when I
hitched my trailer to my truck and left Ringgold. Next question from the fellow over there with the spurs on his boots. Yes, you,
honey. I can see a question in your eyes. "How did you feel, Trace, those times when Gemma got a higher score than
you did and took home the purse? It couldn't be easy losing to a woman." Trace (with a smile on his face): No, it wasn't. And the ribbing I took from the
other cowboys on the circuit wasn't easy either, but she won fair and square.
There wasn't no doubt about it after the first couple of rides that she had
determination and fire. And believe me she could hang on for eight seconds
better than a lot of men. And the pretty little teenage girl with her hair in dog ears right there in the
middle of the room? What's your question and who is it for? "I just want to ask Trace if he's got any brothers or cousins who are
under the age of twenty?" Trace: No, darlin', I do not. My three cousins, Lester, Hill and Harper are all
about thirty. But I bet if you look hard enough right here in Texas, you'll find
a cowboy just waitin' to dance with you or take you to the rodeo. Anyone else? Yes, ma'am, the lady who just arrived and poured a cup of coffee
has a question. "Gemma, what did you think the first time that you and Trace were
introduced? Did you think he was sexy or did he kind of grow on you?" Gemma (with a slight giggle): Oh, honey, I knew he was sexy from the first time
he put his hands on my waist and helped me climb the chute to settle my butt
down on Smokin' Joe's back. But I sure wasn't going to let him in on the secret.
Lord, it was difficult enough keeping him on his toes without him knowing how he
affected me. It took all my determination and will power just to stay on that
bronc's back for eight seconds after Trace winked at me. Now it's time for us to ask you a question! Do you like a good rousting bit of
arguing in your books or do you like a sweet love story where there is little
conflict between the hero and heroine? Trace, Gemma and I intend to be in and
out of Fresh Fiction all day so if you've got more questions, please leave us a
comment and we'll be glad to answer them.

This is the great debate for women - they have to give up their career, put their own lives on hold, and raise a baby or more. Then by the time they can breathe again, they're too tired to achieve at the same level as before, so they wait until the kids are at secondary level school or college. Then, of course, their skills and employment history are so out of date that they can't get hired at anything like the same level as previously. Hence the male bronc rider in your tale can keep riding all he wants, but the female is doomed to a very hard choice.
I think that's plenty of scope for conflict right there!

Judith: Gemma is excited about this book. She had begun to think her turn to tell her story was never coming. Happy Reading when you get it in your hands.
Irene: Trace has a big smile on his face. He really did make a wonderful hero and Gemma turned out to be a solid heroine with a heart of gold...even if it was covered with a layer of sass.
Allie: Gemma says that it takes a strong woman to tame a cowboy but Trace swears it took a stronger cowboy to keep Gemma on her toes. Good luck with on the drawing!
Carla: There is lots of pulse risin' and eyes flashin' in Just a Cowboy and His Baby! With all those older brothers, Gemma is pretty darn competitive.
Clare: You got out the hammer early this morning and hit the nail on the head. Gemma figured it was her last chance at a rodeo tour if she wanted to settle down and have a family, which was important to her and which is something she really wanted. It does make for a lot of conflict and a heavy determination to be a winner at the Las Vegas rodeo!

There are many traits that make for a strong women - especially motherhood. When you throw in love, well the career conflict can be a very real roadblock. A slight change in career path could make a big difference. Why not be able to do both? Instead of rodeo, how about raising broncs for the rodeos?

Conflict with people you have a close relationship with is something that just happens. As long as the conflict is not overly contrived it adds to a novel.

Peg: That is the sweetest comment. Every author prays that she/he can connect with their readers liek that and make their characters into real people. Dewar's story is scheduled to come out next year and that will be the last Spikes & Spurs but a brand new series is in the works...Cowboys & Brides! So don't put your spurs away!

Ann: Not realistically they can't and they have to be real for readers to connect with them. My first editor told me that I could not put my hero and heroine on a picnic blanket and let them fall in love. I had to put them on a shaky limb in a tree and throw rocks at them. It works! LOL

Thank you for your post and question, Carolyn. My answer: I'm somewhere in-between. Some conflict is necessary; without it there's no plot. But---just my opinion---too often authors, especially romance authors, overdo it.
It's easy to generate a story when the hero and heroine hate each other but are forced to interact closely, then discover they have the hots for each other. But to me that's sheer contrivance. I just don't buy it. How often does this happen in the real world?
Far more credible, and (more to the point) more romantic, when both characters love each other, or (at first) one does. But they live in the real world, so there are always other demands that conflict with love. This creates complications, including a clash of egos.
But the romantic connection is still there. It's all about real love, not just lust or the drive for power over the other person. And it resolves the conflict in a natural manner, without contrivance.
To me this is romance fiction at its best. If only it were more common!

I like a bit of conflict in the story to learn more about what makes the characters tick, but too much can take away from the story and get in the way.

I love the Spikes and Spurs series. Sometimes you have to to
have some good arguments and some good banter to make a story
believable and Carolyn does that in her books. This book
sounds fantastic. Can't wait to read it.

I'm really a sucker for a good old-fashioned love story, but I know that there's times when couples do have their moments!! As long as a spat doesn't get carried away with cussing, or gets violent, or goes on forever, it's fine with me. If I had a choice, though, I'd rather not have it at all. I'm really a lover, not a fighter!! Your book sounds like uplifting reading for the Christmas Holiday. I'm anxious to read it. I hope you have a Merry Christmas, and a terrific New Year!!

Hello, all y'all who've commented since I last checked in. And thank you so much for your comments. I was off to a school Christmas concert tonight where two of my many granddaughters were singing so I got a bit behind.
I'm glad to know that so many of you are familiar with my books and have enjoyed them. And to get your honest opinions on conflict, lack of it or maybe just enough to keep the book interesting and moving. Diane Sallans, I love small towns so that's why I write about them. They have a heart beat and pulse of their own and are so much fun. Renee, hope that you like my cowboys when you get around to reading one. And Kimberly, Sourcebooks does a bang up job on my covers. I usually squeal when I get to see one for the first time!

I love your books. They always have the right subject and humor when my life hits a rough spot such as having lousy day at work or having a disagreement with my family. Some of the arguments in your books do put my problems in a different perspective spin on how to look at things.

Theresa, so glad that you stopped by today. Bless your heart for giving my books to your friends. That is the sweetest thing! The next cowboy is Billion Dollar Cowboy and kicks off a four book series that is brand new. He's a billionaire and is tired of running from women who only want his money! She could care less about money and wants his heart but that requires a lot of trust on his side and even more on hers after her upbringing. Dewar's story will be out in August and will finish the Spikes & Spurs but...one never knows when one of the O'Donnell's or Rileys will pop up in a cameo appearance in another series! Those cowboys along the Texas border do tend to know one another! Great meeting you, too! And I understand there is an RWA planned out that way again in a few years so look for the sassy gray haired lady having a good time!

I love reading all your great cowboy books. I'm never disappointed and love them and will hate to see the Spikes & Spurs series end. I know you will keep coming up with new stories (maybe more with two gals in competition for the hot cowboy's attention...did I say, "cat fight?" I will keep reading every book you write!!

Anyone that hasn't read Carolyn's, "Red's Hot Cowboy" is missing one good book...one of my very favorites! Amazon rated it 4-1/2* but I'd give it 5* and that's no lie!!! Keep going with writing those fantastic books, Carolyn.

Theresa, I was raised on country music. It was considered a good Saturday night when Momma could pick up the Grand Ole Opry on her red radio that she set in the bedroom window to get better reception. And don't put your boots up, dawlin', because I'm going to be writing cowboys for a while yet.
