Native Americans' Day began in 1989 when South Dakota unanimously passed
legislation to proclaim 1990 "The Year of Reconciliation" for Native
Americans.
Columbus Day was officially changed to Native Americans' Day and has been
celebrated on the second Monday in October in South Dakota and Berkeley,
California every year. In 1998, California recognized Native Americans' Day
and
designated the fourth Friday in September as a statewide observance of
Native
American history, culture, and traditions.
Native Americans' Day is observed in parts of Washington and Minnesota, and
Tennessee has a similar statewide observance. To learn more about Native
Americans' Day and the Nation's efforts to recognize American Indians and
Alaskan
Natives, please visit www.IndianAffairs.gov, and contact your state to learn
what
you can do to help make Native Americans' Day a statewide observance.

Long before the arrival of Columbus to the new world, a magnificent and
brave
people flourished in a verdant tropical land. Their culture, steeped in
spiritual
life and tradition, provided them sacred wisdom and strength that survived
generations.
In this land of abundance, a young a woman, Teeka, surrendered her heart to
the
shaman's son, Auro. But when a raiding rival tribe invaded their peaceful
village
and she was stolen away by their leader, her life changed forever.
