Trick-or-Treat: Halloween with Humor

I am a scaredy-cat. I watch scary movies with a pillow over my face and hands clamped over my eyes. I might only actually see about 15 minutes of the movie (no lie). When I’m reading horror, I hold the book so my fingers don’t touch the creepy cover except on the edges and my thumbs never brush against the words. It’s like I have a fear the scary will creep out of the ink and into my hands. Yet another reason to love my Kindle. I no longer have to feel the glossy, embossed monsters on the cover!

This is why the second mask of Halloween is my favorite. From the splendidly campy Army of Darkness to the hilarious Shaun of the Dead, these horror movies know how to blend just the right amount of jump-out-of-your-seat scares with laughter, but this is a book column and I’m looking for the perfect balance of humor and horror that will keep me up all night laughing even as I check the dark corners of the closet!

Get your Trick-or-Treat bags ready because these three titles will make you laugh, jump, and beg for more!

DEAD OVER HEELS by Alison Kemper

DEAD OVER
HEELS DEAD OVER HEELS

Ava Pegg isn’t exactly thrilled to spend her summer in Glenview, North Carolina—Land of Incredibly Boring Vacations. But when the boy next door, Cole, comes running to her place in a panic, things get more interesting than Ava can handle. Flesh-eating zombies are attacking the town. Terrified after a zombie attacks them, Ava and Cole flee into forest. No supplies, no weapons, they have nothing but each other if they want to survive.

Romance, humor, and zombies go hand-in-hand, right? They certainly do in Alison Kemper’s world. DEAD OVER HEELS is just the right combination of zombie horror (which I’m not ashamed to admit terrifies me), finding first love, and snarky humor. What more could you possibly ask for this Halloween?

PSI ANOTHER DAY by D.R. Rosensteel

PSI
ANOTHER DAY PSI ANOTHER DAY

Rinnie is just another high school girl…at least during the day. By night, she’s a Psi Fighter—a secret guardian with a decade of Mental Arts training. After her parents were murdered, Rinnie was sent into hiding, but now she’s back and going to high school. But so is the bad guy. The person who murdered her parents has also sent an apprentice to school to find Rinnie. Everyone is a suspect. No matter how cute they are.

PSI ANOTHER DAY is the first in the Psi Fighter Academy series. Full of sarcastic humor, super-hero powers, and an epic battle between good and evil, PSI ANOTHER DAY gives us a little science-fiction in our Trick-or- Treat bag. I know I’d probably go to the dark side if I had super Mental Arts powers. Just saying…I couldn’t be trusted! I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

EVIL LIBRARIAN by Michelle Knudson

EVIL
LIBRARIAN EVIL LIBRARIAN

“He’s young. He’s hot. He’s also evil. He’s . . . the librarian.”

Back in August, I recommended EVIL LIBRARIAN as a fantastic book to help survive high school. I don’t usually recommend the same book twice, but when I thought about which books combined humor, horror, and fantastic writing EVIL LIBRARIAN was the first that came to mind. With a cheeky protagonist, a demon who sacrifices victims in the school library, and a production of Sweeney Todd in the works, EVIL LIBRARIAN has every single element for a great Halloween read. It’s dramatic, dark, hilarious, romantic, and so much fun to read!

Tell me, dear readers, what books make you laugh late into the night?
