As part of our countdown to Readers & ‘ritas 2017, our
Meet the
Author interview series helps you get to know the authors joining us in
Texas on November 10-12. Read on to get acquainted with USA Today
bestselling author Kathy Lyons, and purchase your tickets to meet her in person at Readers &
‘ritas!
What book made you fall in love with the genre you write?
This is a good question because paranormal romance is a large field. But if
I had to go back to the beginning, it would be A Knight in Shining
Armor. Time travel struck me as wonderful, mixing my Kathy Lyons
paranormal love with my Jade Lee historical leaning. I even wrote a time
travel, ALMOST AN ANGEL (writing
as Jade Lee/Katherine Greyle), soon after reading it. But I’m so into
shifters right now, I’m trying to think of one shifter book that really
sparked the others. I can’t. I just love them all!
If a movie were made of your most recent book, who would you cast in
the lead and why?
I’d pick Benedict Cumberbatch to play Alan in FOR THE BEAR'S EYES ONLY because he’s
lanky, a little bit creepy, and so hot I even watched the Star Trek
outtake of him taking an evil shower a dozen times. The hero of this third
book in my grizzly bear trilogy is Alan, a great guy who was tortured and
changed into a half shifter by the villain. He’s angry, expects to die soon,
and is bent on taking out the villainess before the end. Benedict has just
enough creepy factor to play a guy who believes he’s a monster. And enough
sex appeal that when our heroine redeems him, would be swoonworthy hot on
the screen.
What was the first story you ever wrote?
All Gentlemen Gamble, a traditional regency with head hopping and
scenes that read like a screenplay. Scene setting first, then all dialogue
without tags. I was a bad screenwriter before I was a novelist, so all that
lack of skill went into my first book. Thankfully, the manuscript is gone.
Thrown out when our basement flooded. PHEW!
If you could change the ending to any famous book, TV show, or
movie, what would it be and how would you rewrite it? (Spoiler alert!)
I loved The Good Wife TV show until the end. OMG, that was a horrible
ending, with Alicia becoming as bad as her husband. She betrayed her best
friend for power and completely betrayed the audience who had stuck by her
through the whole series. AWFUL! By contrast, the ending
of Justified was PERFECT!
What is your favorite part of meeting your readers (and new
readers)?
I love meeting people in general. There’s always something we can talk
about, share, and enjoy. But if they’re readers, well then I love the book
talk. Just love it! I always get something new to read or think about, and
hopefully they enjoy hanging out with me, too!
