Natale Stenzel | Between a Rock and a Heart Place
February 24, 2009
First of all, thank you, thank you to Fresh Fiction for hosting me here today.
I love visiting this site for scoop on all the latest romance novels by my
favorite authors, so I'm thrilled to be blogging here on the release day for BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HEART
PLACE, the third book in my series of funny paranormal romances. As you'd guess almost immediately upon reading the back cover blurb for this
story, my heroine Daphne Forbes receives a truly unwelcome gift: renegade puca
powers. Oh. Well, that explains everything. Or maybe not? A puca is actually a
fantastical character derived from Celtic and British mythologies. In some
traditions, the puca is a shape-shifting trickster who preys on travelers; half
faery and half human, the creature has a distinctly mischievous, even malicious
bent. Does my version of the puca accurately reflect all the mythological
accounts? Some of them. Others I cheerfully warped and expanded to suit my own
needs. The pucas in my stories have three specific powers: mindspeak (mind-to-
mind communication), glamour (creating illusion/molding the thoughts of
humans), and shape-shifting. Now those first two abilities unnerve Daphne, mostly because she considers them
an unacceptable invasion of human privacy. In all honesty, though, it's the
shape-shifting power that's giving her fits. You see, she can't control when
she shifts or what creature she becomes when she changes -- and she can't shift
back to human form without help. Kind of dicey, huh? That's where Tremayne
comes in handy. You see, he's something of a power vacuum or a great reset
button. He can undo the effects of magic, which makes him invaluable to a woman
who can't undo her own magic or use magic to return to original form. So, until
she learns to control magic herself, she's utterly dependent on him. If just
the idea of this situation alarms you, imagine what the reality of it would do
to a control-obsessed accountant trying to escape oppressive Druid parents. Key for Daphne in this story is learning to control the effects of her
emotions. Until she masters this, any emotional extreme she experiences results
in a spontaneous shape-shift. Obviously, this puts her in some uncomfortable,
dangerous and often hilarious situations. You might be relieved to know that
Daphne does eventually learn to control which shape she assumes. She also
learns to appreciate some of the advantages of her new powers. At the height of
her lessons in control, Tremayne invites her to imagine the one shape she'd be
if she could choose to be any creature in the whole world. Think of the
freedom . . . the possibilities . . . If you had Daphne's powers and the ability to control them, what would you do?
If you could transform yourself physically (and temporarily) into any creature
at all, what would it be? Leave me a comment on this blog for a chance to win a
copy of either Pandora's
Box (book 1 in this series) or The Druid Made Me Do It (book 2). Winner gets to choose! www.natalestenzel.com/

Re: Natale Stenzel | Between a Rock and a Heart Place
This series sounds really intriguing!
If I could transform? Probably a cat. Sounds weird, but they get attention, they're playful and fur is warm when its 6 degrees out (Virginia Hendricks 8:25am February 24, 2009)
I would have to say a lion - king of the jungle, you know? (Lisa Freeman 9:37am February 24, 2009)
Thanks, Virginia! Weird or not, I have to agree on cat*eg*.
Lisa, a lion would be cool. Really. (Making a note.) (Natale Stenzel 11:24am February 24, 2009)
I would transform into a dolphin, I love the water and swimming! (Teresa Warner 11:35am February 24, 2009)
If I could transform, I would like to transform into a big cat like a tiger or a jaguar. (Crystal Broyles 12:25pm February 24, 2009)
I not sure what I would to transform into, but there has been a time or two that I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall so I would know what was being said in a few meetings. It would be nice to be a cat and get loved on all the time. (Gail Hurt 12:41pm February 24, 2009)
I think I would like to be a dragon...it would certainly get attention:). (Robin McKay 1:30pm February 24, 2009)
I would transform into a bird, a very large bird. Then I would have the freedom to travel all over and poop on bad people... (Susan Galley 1:43pm February 24, 2009)
A dolphin! What a great idea. Another vote for big cat . . . fly on the wall sounds really great*g* . . . dragon would be so cool . . . and lol, Susan! These are great! (Natale Stenzel 5:18pm February 24, 2009)
I would be a wolf. (Stacey Smith 6:13pm February 24, 2009)
Well, you didn't say I was limited to one so....I would transform into any animal I needed! :) (Michelle K 6:49pm February 24, 2009)
A tiger or a wolf. (R. Billingsley 7:00pm February 24, 2009)
Decisions, decisions...I too like the fly on the wall idea. Eagles hold a special place in my heart, so either an eagle or a chihuahua. My chihuahua is so loyal and faithful. (Kay Martinez 8:30pm February 24, 2009)
I'd have to go with a tiger. (Stacy Schooler 9:07pm February 24, 2009)
Hi Natale - Your books sound fun! Hard decision but for a temporary shift I think I would go with a hawk so I could fly!! (Martha Eskuchen 9:43pm February 24, 2009)
Ooh, a wolf is always good -- canine family and yet undomesticated. Michelle, I'm with you; flexibility is so useful*eg*. Loving the tiger still and the fly on the wall . . . eagle is impressive*g*. Chihuahua could actually be downright hilarious (had a visual of the Taco Bell dog for a minute) . . . and very resourceful, actually. Hawk would also be intimidatiating -- predatory and yet aristocratic. Great choices. (Natale Stenzel 9:54pm February 24, 2009)
A dolphin. They move with such ease and joy. (Sue Ahn 10:20pm February 24, 2009)
A wolf...have always loved them. (G. Bisbjerg 11:21pm February 24, 2009)
I would be a cat....simply because I love cats...they are playful and loving with a dash of arrogance. (Rowena Huser 8:25am February 25, 2009)
I think I'd like to be an Eagle. I'll get to fly and I wouldn't really be a weak bird after all;-) (Mona Hassan 12:23pm February 25, 2009)
I would want to be invisable, I can just THINK of all the mischief I could get into...Payback on troublemakers? Oh Yeah ;) Animal? definitly a cat because they're sooo cute & non threatening (Mwahahaha) Mindy :) [email protected] (Mina Gerhart 3:10pm February 25, 2009)
I'm thinking that there are so many things to transform into depending on the who, what, when and where. (Laurie Peterson 6:26pm February 25, 2009)
I would want to be a tiger..wild and free (as long as it was temporary)..I would like to be able to try a lot of different animals...just to see the world through their eyes. (Kimberley Coover 8:47pm February 25, 2009)
I think I'd like to be a mule. They are well fed, get by with being stubborn and they quit when they get tired. (Mary Falls 9:03pm February 25, 2009)
I agree with the cat. Our cat can get into places that we never thought it could. (Karin Tillotson 10:03pm February 25, 2009)
I'd go with a feline also but probably a jaguar or panther. So much sleek power! (Lynda Smith 11:41pm February 25, 2009)
Too hard to choose just one...an Eagle for flying....a Dolphin or an Otter for water and a Cheetah for running. Can you just imagine the fun until it was time to eat.*g* (Ruby Davis 1:21am February 26, 2009)
I would pick a panda bear because they are so cute. (Katy Yule 11:02am February 26, 2009)
A dragon, the ability to fly and create fire. Can you imagine the damage I would cause ;) (Ann Marie Brown 11:34am February 26, 2009)
You all are giving me the itch to write another shape-shifter*g*. Thank you so much, everyone, for participating. And thank you again to Fresh Fiction for having me here! (Natale Stenzel 3:49pm February 26, 2009)
A black panther would be cool. (Halona Skaggs 7:42pm February 26, 2009)
Me if I truly had a choice It would be an Elephant, or a Panther. (Ann w 10:12pm February 26, 2009)
I think I'd have to go with the tiger (Karen Haas 9:03am February 27, 2009)
