Jeff Nesbit | What's the Price for Ultimate Power?
October 9, 2013
JUDE (my latest novel,
from David C. Cook) asks a simple, basic question: What happens to a man who
commits himself utterly to achieving ultimate power, fame and money with
absolute control from higher demonic powers? The central character of the novel, Jude Asher, has no ties whatsoever to
anyone, save his twin brother, Thomas. He's an orphan. He moves from one foster
home to another. He's called on principalities and powers from an early age. He
has no one - no parents, no teachers, no mentors, no peers or colleagues -
telling him what might be right or wrong. His only moral compass, if you can call it that, is self-interest. Because he
acts purely out of what might be achieved in his own lifetime, Jude pursues
whatever he wishes with a single-minded and cold-blooded calculation that
becomes increasingly more intricate as the novel progresses. His only check or balance is his identical twin brother, Thomas, the
first-person narrator of Jude's rise to ultimate wealth, fame and power. Jude began to consort with demons, those that convince humans they have no need
for God in their lives, at an early age. He works his way to those at the upper
end of the demonic hierarchy that controls nation-states and determines world
events. Jude quickly learns that these supernatural forces are capable of giving him
what he wants. Ultimately, these forces will offer him the world. Jude accepts,
and becomes someone capable of corrupting, controlling and influencing huge
numbers of people. Thomas is constantly tormented with the notion that he should save his twin
brother, and confronts him at various points in their lives. But is he, in fact,
his brother's keeper? Or is his path simply beyond Thomas' reach? As I was researching and writing JUDE, I kept returning
over and over to the question of whether an emperor god could ever walk the
earth again - whether something like that was even possible in our modern society. Emperor gods have ruled the earth only one time before in modern history -
during the time of Jesus. Roman emperors were also gods to their subjects - and
it's the only time such a combination ruled over all of known human civilization. That concept - of an emperor god who can do whatever he wishes, anywhere on the
earth - was destroyed and seemingly lost for good when Christianity became
Rome's religion. So did Jesus come to earth so that emperor gods would not
become the dominant form of worldly, earthly power? The rise of Christianity ended their reign as earthly deities, and none have
appeared since. Is it even possible for an emperor god to rise again? That's the
question JUDE attempts
to answer. Comment to win a copy of JUDE and a Starbucks Gift
Card.

A scary thought to think of one person owning that much power. I hope we as human race do not let that happen again, though our bible tells us it will some day. I find it hard to believe that we could all agree to let one person rule with that much power, there is so much disagreement, for lack of a better word, in the world today. I don't see how we could ever come together in large enough numbers to allow it. (Rhiannon Rowland 3:56am October 9, 2013)
Spiritual warfare is real. We need to be aware of the tactics of the enemy of our souls. Hopefully, books such as this will help us understand. (Andrea Schultz 9:57am October 9, 2013)
Jude seems like a very exciting book! I know there are such forces in our world, but, I also know that most of humankind can stay true to an honest and good life. Evil is strong, but they say good is stronger. We can always hope it is. In any event, this book sounds like one I will be reading-win or lose this contest. Thank you for the chance to win a copy. Hmmmmm. Has Jude read Macchiavelli's The Prince? And does his borrowed juju exempt him from the self-restraint necessary to keep one's power? (Mary Ann Dimand 12:41pm October 9, 2013)
I heard about this book a few weeks ago and I REALLY want to read it. Compelling plot and brilliant writer! (Dave Wonders 12:48pm October 9, 2013)
I would love to read this book. Stories like this give me chills, because I know one day, everyone is going to want to break that deal. And demons are not good ones to cross. (John Urban 12:51pm October 9, 2013)
This sounds like the coming Antichrist. The book sounds fascinating and I'd love to read it. I volunteer at a Christian Lending library and I would love to donate this book to them. (Linda Browne 1:06pm October 9, 2013)

Your book has an interesting story to tell, and I absolutely believe that perhaps there could be someone who believes that they are an emperor god who will try to reign again, but they will not become one. Somehow, an army of some other entity will have them removed from power before they can completely take reign, or get their plans put into law. These are scary times, and anything is possible. Thank you for writing just not food for thought, but a possible heads' up!! (Peggy Roberson 3:23pm October 9, 2013)
Interesting...power does corrupt (Diane Pollock 3:28pm October 9, 2013)

I don't believe in the supernatural. I know many people do..so good luck with your new release. My son will love the Starbucks card. (Susan Coster 6:08pm October 9, 2013)
"Emperor gods have ruled the earth only one time before in modern history."
I'll go ahead and qualify that this statement would be true only if you're referring to "modern Western history." In other cultures, emperors who rule as gods have continued in China and Japan to the late 19th century and early-mid 20th century. (Frank Tan 6:10pm October 9, 2013)
I enjoy fiction that twists history and religion (to frankly make it more interesting.) I hadn't heard of this book but I'm curious now. Thanks for the blog post and the giveaway. (Jamie Fortney 6:52pm October 9, 2013)
Appears to be a very compelling story, captures my interest! (Barbara Wells 7:21pm October 9, 2013)
This book sounds great! Sounds like there will be a lot of angst for Jude, especially regarding his brother. I may have to read it even if I don't win it, LOL! (Joanne Schultz 8:09pm October 9, 2013)
There are times when I'm tempted to make a deal with the devil. Alright, I do think about it and my conscious won't allow me to sleep. Great story that reflects everyone's desire except we have higher standards to ourselves. (Kai Wong 9:51pm October 9, 2013)
Wow, Congrats on your new book: JUDE. Wow, this sounds like a very interesting and spiritual book to win and read this Fall. Thank You very much. Cecilia CECE (Cecilia Dunbar Hernandez 11:50pm October 9, 2013)

Selling yourself to the devil means a life out of your hands. Saving his brother offers a contrast to the life he chose and a chance to redeem himself and straighten up his ways. (Alyson Widen 6:08pm October 31, 2013)
