Sandi Shilhanek | September...read A New Book Month

A discussion in one of my yahoo groups brought up special holidays in September. I’m sure if we all took a moment and stopped we could think of the more "traditional" holidays that September holds, but I wanted to think of something different. That sent me to Google and what I found was that September is Read A New Book Month.

Naturally I did a laugh in my head...read a new book month? How many new books would I be reading in a month? How many would my friends be reading in a month? Why when I went to Barnes and Noble did I not see huge signs advertising September as Read A New Book Month?

The next thought means I have to find someone who doesn’t read and introduce them to a book. Hmmm...what book do I recommend? Something I’ve read? Something my friends are raving about, but isn’t necessarily what I would read? Or do I just willy nilly hand them a gift card, and hope they use it to buy a book?

How would you handle this obvious dilemma? Do you have something new that you recently bought, and now are inspired to read because it’s Read A New Book Month? Will you use the basic idea of Read A New Book Month to try a new author? Spill all because I really don’t know what to do!

Until next week happy page turning!

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | September...read A New Book Month

Sandi: I'd probably take into account that person's interests, beliefs, and values. Also, I'd ask myself: What are his/her tastes in other media, such as TV and movies? Which websites does s/he visit often? Which current issues interest this person?

Which crowd does s/he run with? Which books are they into?

I'd then give this info to a trusted bookseller or librarian, and ask for recommended titles, authors, and genres.

I wonder whether such services already exist on the Web. If someone knows of any, please share this info with us.

I guess I'd take it to mean try a new author you've never read before, either myself or a gift to someone else to encourage them to try someone new to them. Or, maybe you could take it to mean buy a new release instead of going to the library or your UBS?

I've just picked up Deanna Raybourn's books finally to try this month, new to me, and liked the premise. Then I'm going to see if I can get my mother to try them as she likes mysteries but doesn't normally read that genre.
(Pamela Pellini 4:20am September 13, 2009)

I think I would choose to read a new author because it's always easier to pick up an author I know.

Personally, I will be reading
a few new books this month
because I won some in contests
or picked some up on
recommendation of others (via
book blogs). As for your
question, I think you need to
take into consideration their
likes and dislikes and then
choose from something you've
read or intend to read,
preferably the first option. I
think it is a little sketchy
to recommend a book you
haven't read or don't intend
to read. Unless, of course,
you've read some good press
about it and it doesn't fall
into your list of favorites.
Personally, I'd still shy away
from recommending a book I
wouldn't read. I'd only go
with ones I have or are in the
process of reading. But if I
don't like it, I probably
won't pass it on.

I knew there was a reason I was looking at new authors this month! I have been going back to read some of the many books I had recieved over the past couple of years but left sitting unread on my book shelf. For me, reading a new book would be reading an author I hadn't read before, or perhaps (if one is adventurous) reading something in a new genre.
I am constatnly hoping to get my nephew to read anything, just read- so for me I wouldn't care the form of the book just that he finds something he likes and get him to take time away enough to finish it.
(Sara Edmonds 10:31am September 13, 2009)

I'll definitely be reading some new books and new to me authors this month. Finishing up a good one now, a new debut historical author from last fall Mary Blayney "Traitor's Kiss/Lover's Kiss" its a 2 books in 1 book. Really enjoying discovering this new to me author and book.
I'd like to find someone who doesn't read and give them a book, but I honestly cannot think of any of my friends that don't read.
(Shauna George 10:35am September 13, 2009)

If I were the one trying to get books for someone I would first try to figure out what they liked, what kind of books they already own, that kind of thing. You have to be sneaky about it.

Since many of the TV shows that are out now (Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, etc.) are based on some type of book or other, you can find out what they like.

If your not good at subterfuge, then do this, come up with a list of questions that a librarian or book seller would ask to help someone choose a book. Then, tell the person in question it's a poll you're doing for and article and you wanted their input (all anonymous of course - nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

You might find that they do read, but they rent from the library because it's cheaper... You never know.

I read on the average about a dozen books that are new to me and "new" a month these days.
(Carrie Hinkel-Gill 11:30am September 13, 2009)

Oh yeah, I forgot. September 19th is National Talk Like a Pirate Day!
(Carrie Hinkel-Gill 11:30am September 13, 2009)

For my friends I think I will lend them my library(I have a lot of books) I would help them select a book or new author to read. For myself I read new authors all the time and I'm never without a book in my hand. Maybe I'll try picking something I might not of thought of reading. I laugh at read a new BOOK month, it should be BOOKS.
(Theresa Buckholtz 11:35am September 13, 2009)

I did not know it was read a book month. I am always reading. In getting something for someone else I might be tempted to by them a gift card from one of the bookstores. Just depends on how well I know the person. Happy reading everyone!!
(Julie Harper 11:39am September 13, 2009)

I'm counting this holiday a success as my newly reading son had gotten "stuck" in a book he'd picked up....It took me two or three days, but I've convinced him to put a sticky note in the book he was stuck on and pick another book. I see the "new" choice lying here on the coffee table with a bookmark about a third of the way in.....so I'm good.

And, I'm reading a new-to-me author and enjoying her.
(Cindy Ferrell 1:32pm September 13, 2009)

Read a new book: if it was for me I would have no problem, I'm always open to finding somebody new to read. If I was to make a suggestion to someone I would want to know their tastes & reccomend something I have previously read.
(Pam Nolan 2:30pm September 13, 2009)

My initial thought was that it would be a newly released book, but a new author for me or a book I hadn't read before are just as likely. This month I've read "A Dark Love" by Margaret Carroll and "Can't Stand the Heat" by Louisa Edwards. Both are new books and both new authors to me. I enjoyed both and will read them again, so the new book month is a success, at least for me!
(Jill Hayden 2:41pm September 13, 2009)

My thoughts are that it would be a new book to stimulate the economy..but I have also been trying many new authors and just getting them from the library too. Interesting ideas though..
(Joy Hoormann 3:47pm September 13, 2009)

I love new authors to me, so I read a new book a month all the time. I have been for a while.
(Gail Hurt 5:25pm September 13, 2009)

I thought I was reading a new to me author last month, and then realized I had read that author before.
However, this is a new genre for me to read of that author...not a new genre for me to read. I'm reading
Laura Caldwell, and read her chick lit. Now I'm reading her mysteries.

A new author I've read recently is Tracy Wolff. I also recently read Elizabeth Berg who while not new to me is
someone I haven't read in a long time, so I'm wondering if I can count her as new!

Thanks for the comments.
(Sandi Shilhanek 6:05pm September 13, 2009)

Like all of us here, I'm constantly reading new books, so I'd have to go with new authors and or genres.

One month I did a challenge to read only authors I'd never read before. It was an amazing month! I found a number of authors I hadn't taken the time to read before and found out what I was missing! Since I read over 80 series, it's all too easy to pick up one of them in my quest to keep current, but reading new authors as a challenge for an entire month kept my reading palette fresh and got me out of a slump.
(Janet Beckley 8:26pm September 13, 2009)

I'm not sure how I would do this because the majority of the people I know,,,,,,,,not online,,,,,,,don't read. And the two people I know who do read, read the exact same things I do since we share our books with each other.
(Debbie Beverley 11:06pm September 13, 2009)

So many people say to me "Oh, I don't have time to read." That always amazes me, how can you not have time to read? I can't figure out why a person can't take 15 minutes or so a day to read!! I've been reading since I was a child. What does this have to do with the topic? Not much I guess. Most of the books I read are new wether they have been recent buys or they have been on the TBR shelf for awhile. I do reread and I do try new authors so I'm good!! Recently I have heard about a couple of authors that would be new to me. I'll get to them I just don't know when.
(Donna McClure 11:51pm September 13, 2009)

Hi Pamela, would that have been "Silent In The Grave"? I downloaded that one yesterday to read as an ebook, which is a new method for me.

Maybe Read a New Book Month means to try a new-to-you author or line, or even reading method. It doesn't say "Get Someone to Read Month" so I'm assuming it means to read it yourself. I read new books all the time, like most of the rest of you, I have Read a New Book every month.

Hi Donna, my husband can say he has no time to read when all he's doing is sitting in front of the boob-tube and clicking the remote from channel to channel, not even watching anything. My opinion is if you really want to do something, it doesn't matter how busy you are, you WILL find time to do it.

Great topic, as usual, Sandi.
(Donna Breitkreuz 12:09pm September 14, 2009)

when ever i talk books, which is often, i usually reccomend my favs, funny? go with janet evanovich or sandra hill's cajun series, cia/black ops? brad thor or vince flynn. romanic western? jodi thomas. then of course there is robynn carr, she is just fantastic, and you can never go wrong with julie garwood. i could go on and on.lol but thats how it goes when i start talking about books.
(Becky Kinkead 6:42pm September 14, 2009)

Currently I am reading a "New To Me Author".....Curtiss Ann Matlock newest, "Chin Up, Honey". The one person that I know that reads like I do, reads the same genre. If I do purchase a book as a gift, its usually a special interest or a cookbook.
