Favorites Movies and Favorites Books: a Love Story

A lot of times people ask me where I find inspiration to write my books. Of
course it comes from many places, but a couple of times I have ended up writing
about a trope of a movie I really love.
Want to know a secret? Tie
Me Up! Tie Me Down! indirectly inspired me to write BRAZILIAN CAPTURE. I love
books where either the heroine or hero is kidnapped. It gives us a lot to work
with as authors, like how the relationship between captor and captive change and
grow.
In case you havenโt seen, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! features a young Antonio
Banderas. Heโs just released from a mental institution and kidnaps the woman
heโs obsessed withโa jaded porn starโbecause he wants to convince her to marry
him. Before you throw tomatoes at me, understand this movie was written and
directed by Pedro Almodรณvar, therefore political correctness is not an
option. Controversial or not, itโs a movie about two lost souls who end up
finding and choosing each other.
So as you see, when you take the general ideaโfinding love despite the
circumstancesโ itโs easy to relate it to romance books. In BRAZILIAN CAPTURE,
passionate activist Emanuel kidnaps Erika because sheโs valuable for her father,
whoโs also his sworn enemy. He wants to destroy her father and bring down his
embezzlement operation and more. Erika canโt believe some of his accusations.
Despite her instant attraction to the sexy, dangerous Brazilian hottie, she fights.
She fights to escape. She fights her pull toward him. And ultimately, she fights
to learn the truth about her father and herself.
So here you have an example about how a movie trope can be used in a book with
completely different characters and plot, but with a similar message.

My fav Almodovar film is Flower of My Secret. I liked the
adaptation from a billion years ago of the Anne of Green
Gables series. I loved the book version of The Shining
more than the film. I love just about any of the Jane
Eyre adaptations but the Fassbender version with it's
switched around format gets the mood exactly right.

This is so sad. I rarely watch movies. Especially movies that began as a book. The closest I can think of would be Frankenstein, simply because I had to read that one in high school. I will confess though, I never finished the book; I skimmed throughout and still managed an 83% on my essay about it. And the movie? I've never watched the whole thing through, no matter what adaptation. Me bad.

How fun!! I used to enjoy the Pedro Almodovar movies a
lot. Many times if I've read the book, the adaptation
just doesn't live up to it. BUT, most of the Harry
Potters did a decent job, Pride and Prejudice with Colin
Firth, Outlander has been superb, American Gods...still
forming an opinion. I guess in the long run, you just
can't cram an great book into a two hour movie. A mini
series gives you the option of building detail.

I thought that "To Kill a Mockingbird" was done well.Gone
with the wind was good too but was just too long for one

The whole series of Harry Potter movies, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
trilogies are my favorite movie adaptations. I guess when it came for motion
pictures I prefer actions, fantasy and visual effects.
