Charlotte Stein | Control
January 30, 2014
When I’m writing, I love nothing more than putting together a playlist based on
the various themes and emotions and character beats I intend on putting into the
book. So I thought I’d share a little about the kinds of songs that inspired my
book Control.
1. I Like You So Much Better Than You’re Naked, Ida Maria
I think this song is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a very erotic book, and one
of the scenes involves someone getting comfortable with their nakedness! 2. Halo, Beyonce
I just love the line “remember those walls I built, well baby they’re tumbling
down”. It’s a cheesy song, but that line rings so true for the majority of my
work that I usually end up listening to it while writing. My characters have
walls, and boy does someone come along and smash them up. 3. Armour Love, La Roux
This is another song I listen to often while writing. The yearning in her voice
is very powerful, and pushes me to write more intensely. Control was the first
book that benefited from its impact, however. 4. Cannonball, Damien Rice
Again, it’s a line in this one that really worked for the book. It goes “come on
courage, teach me to be shy” and I find that concept so beautiful and so perfect
for Control. The hero is shy and gentle and I wanted to show how amazing those
qualities can be – and this line seems to embody that sentiment. Being a kind
and gentle man takes far more courage in our society than being strong and
aggressive. Or at least, it appears that way to me! Thanks for letting me ramble about my book, Fresh Fiction! It was fun.
Will she choose control or just let go? When Madison Morris decides to hire an
assistant to help run her naughty bookshop, she gets a lot more than she
bargained for. Two very different men are vying for the position...and a whole
lot more. Andy excites her into grasping control, while Gabriel shows her how
freeing it can be to just let go. Soon the lines are blurring and Madison is no
longer sure who's leading and who's following. In the midst of kinky threesomes
and power plays, she'll have to finally decide what-and who-she really wants.

This book is normally not my genre of reading, but it does sound interesting. It would be perfect for this time of year, to help warm up the final chill of Winter. I love to read about the Authors' insight into writing their books, and to have an opportunity to win one as well. It makes the book a little more special that way. Congratulations on your book!! I'm sure it will do well. (Peggy Roberson 9:13am January 30, 2014)

It is always fun to here about how a book came to be or what things inspired. Was aware that sometimes authors associated specific songs to the writing of their characters and books. (G. Bisbjerg 12:45pm January 30, 2014)
