Today's guest is Jenny Colgan, author of Meet Me at the Cupcake Café.

1. Thanks so much for being here today, and congrats on the US release of MEET ME AT THE CUPCAKE CAFÉ! Tell us 3 things US readers might not know about you?

Secondly, I've been publishing romantic comedies in the UK and Europe for fourteen years, but I also have a sideline in writing books for the British science fiction show Doctor Who, which is also immense fun. This is the only thing I do that impresses my children. And thirdly, in my younger days I tried performing stand up comedy. Let me tell you, I was TERRIBLE at it. Stand up is really really hard!

2. I have to admit that while reading this book, I was hungry the whole time! I loved the recipes. Where did you come up with/find the recipes featured in this book? Is there one in particular you love the most?

Jenny: Well, I have my own recipe book in the kitchen so I take recipes and tinker with them till they work best for me. I always always love a lemon drizzle cake, always. Bit squidgy from the oven with plenty of frosting!

3. Issy finds herself in quite the predicament—laid off by her supposed boyfriend, unsure of what to do next... and eventually, owner of a cupcake café. How did you come up with the storyline for this character?

Jenny: I wanted to write about someone boldly stepping out. When I worked in an office I used to dream all the time of setting up on my own but I was far too scared! So Issy is like a brave version of me, but I think a lot of people share Issy's dream of doing something for themselves rather than working for a boss.

4. Friendship plays a big role in Issy's story. What do you and your best girlfriends do when you have a night out together?

Jenny: Ha, oh lord we are terrible, we go out and drink wine and talk very loudly about our lives and pretend we're a lot younger than we are! There are few things I love more than a night out with my girlfriends, in fact I am in London on this week, the weather is going to be hot, we have found a new rooftop bar, and we are all ready to go!

5. Who/what inspired you to become an author?

Jenny: I was an obsessive reader, always. Still am. The writer William Gibson once said that he was a professional reader, and being a writer was just the closest he could get to that and make a living, and that's exactly how I feel about it. It still feels amazingly lucky that I get to do this as a job.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one of the characters from MEET ME AT THE CUPCAKE CAFÉ there with you, who would you choose and why?

Jenny: HA! I would have Pearl. She always knows what to do. She has a calmness about her that would be very useful.

7. If you had the opportunity to open up a shop like Issy, what kind of shop would it be?

Jenny: At the moment I'm completely obsessed with bread; sourdough and bagels and all that good stuff. So a really amazing artisanal bakery.

MEET ME AT THE CUPCAKE CAFÉ BY JENNY COLGAN - IN STORES JULY 2013

A sweet and satisfying novel of how delicious it is to discover your dreams

Issy Randall can bake. No, Issy can create stunning, mouthwateringly divine cakes. After a childhood spent in her beloved Grampa Joe's bakery, she has undoubtedly inherited his talent. She's much better at baking than she is a filing so when she's laid off from her desk job, Issy decides to open her own little café. But she soon learns that her piece-of-cake plan will take all of her courage and confectionary talent to avert disaster.

Funny and sharp, Meet Me at the Cupcake Café is about how life might not always taste like you expect, but there's always room for dessert!

Re: Jenny Colgan | Meet Me At the Cupcake Cafe

This sounds like the type of read where a person will not only have a great time reading the story, but they'll put on a few pounds flipping the pages!! LOL I can't believe that you have 11 novels out there, all of those accolades, and this is the first that I've heard of you!! It sounds like I have some reading to do!! Seriously, I have to find your books, since all of them sound like great reads for this time of year, and I'm so glad that you came to this side of the pond to let us know that you're out there!! Congratulations on your latest book, and I have you down on my TBR list as we speak!!

How ironic that I was just writing down some recipes I found that I want to try, and I come across you with your new book with recipes in it!!! I found a recipe for chocolate chip cream cheese cookie bars that sounded really good and a few Amish recipes, etc. I'm always collecting recipes, so this would be just the book for me to read indeed, as I haven't read any of your great books...yet!
