Kari Lee Harmon | A New Series - Coldwater Cove
Giveaway!
March 1, 2022
Hi, everyone, I’m so glad to be here today. It’s March! The month of spring. I don’t know about you all, but I have had enough of being isolated. Between winter and covid, the days seem to drag on endlessly. I, for one, am ready for a fresh start. It’s a new year, full of new possibilities, and brand-new books!
DARK SEAS (Coldwater Cove book 1) comes out on March 8th.
The book takes place in a fictional little fishing village called Coldwater Cove in Maine. I’ve never lived in Maine, but I’m fascinated by the majestic state. I love the rugged coastline and cliffs, the powerful ocean, the quaint towns, the harbors filled with fishing boats, and the lighthouses.
Maine lends itself as the perfect backdrop for a suspenseful book. I set Coldwater Cove to border Canada, with Nova Scotia right across the bay. With so much of Maine being remote, there aren’t enough border patrol agents to plug all the holes. Inspection stations and checkpoints are so spread out that many sections are unmanned for hours. Even with cameras and motion sensors in place, if an illegal immigrant, trafficker, arms dealer, or terrorist slipped through and was seen, he or she would be long gone by the time the agents got there. This opened the door for several book ideas.
In the first book, DARK SEAS, Stacy Buchanan’s mother drowned ten years ago. Stacy moved away to follow her dream of becoming a sports journalist, but when her father’s health declines, she moves back to help him. After she moves back, a key piece of evidence reveals her mother’s death may not have been an accident. The setting plays a big role in adding suspense to the situations Stacy finds herself in. Rugged terrain and unpredictable weather with a killer on the loose who will do anything to keep the past buried made this book exciting and fun to write.
The next book in the series, FROZEN WATERS, will come out July 12th and I am writing that book right now. So, tell me, how important is the setting to you all when you choose a book to read? Does it depend on the genre of book you’re reading? Do you like vivid descriptions with backdrops that make you wish you were there? Or are the characters more important to you, and you don’t really care what setting they are in?
In honor of DARK SEAS coming out on March 8th, I’m holding a giveaway. Leave a comment about what aspects of a book are the most important to you and why. Settings, characters, plot, etc. One winner will receive a signed copy of the book and a basket of goodies :-) Thanks so much for playing along, and happy reading! Good luck!
Coldwater Cove #1
An unsettled past…
Ten years ago Stacy Buchanan’s mother—the mayor—was found dead in Coldwater Cove, Maine. Her death was ruled an accident, but Stacy never got over the feeling that something was off. Her father’s health takes a turn for the worse, and he can no longer live alone. A champion swimmer turned journalist; she is forced to pass up a dream job at ESPN to return to the cove.
Former marine turned FBI agent—Trent West—has thought of nothing for the past ten years except his secret mission. Undercover as Trent Clark—a delivery man for Worldwide Parcel Service—he moves to the cove and befriends the Buchanan’s.
After Stacy finds a key piece of evidence that proves her mother’s death was no accident, the case gets reopened. She can’t move on with her life or find closure until justice is served, but a desperate killer is still out there and will do anything to keep the truth buried in the past. The only person she trusts is Trent, who keeps turning up whenever she needs him. He offers to help her find the killer, but she discovers he has a few secrets of his own. Secrets that link him to her mother’s case, making Stacy doubt everything she thought she knew and threaten her chance at finally being happy.

A mystery with a fishing village as a setting sounds intriguing. Lighthouses and being on the water are atmospheric. It looks like a read that holds the reader in suspense. (Alyson Widen 8:34pm March 2, 2022)
All aspects of the book are important to me. Good character and plot development are crucial. A good description of the setting is also desired. The locale of a story influences so much of what can happen as well as the feel of the work. We lived in Maine for several years and travel back when we can. That atmosphere is important to convey whether you are in the mountains or along the coast. I love both areas. As a reader who has been lucky enough to travel a bit, it is rewarding when I come across a book set where I have been. It adds so much more to my enjoyment of the book. (Patricia Barraclough 12:43pm March 3, 2022)
Characters and plot are essential elements. Kari Harmon is a new-to-me author. Thank you for the chance. (Caryl Kane 10:47am March 3, 2022)

This is my type of book. Thank you for the chance to win it. (Anna Speed 3:20pm March 3, 2022)
I can't wait to read this! (LeAnn Abernathy 8:43pm March 3, 2022)
The setting is important and makes the book more interesting, but the characters are more important. If the characters aren't ones that I can care about, then it doesn't matter what the setting is. (Tanja Dancy 9:20am March 4, 2022)
The characters are important to a story. No matter how good the plot or the setting if a reader can’t like the characters then the book won’t be worth reading. (Jackie Wisherd 3:37pm March 4, 2022)
Characters that are well written and easy to relate to. A plot line or setting are secondaries in details and something I can easily imagine. Your book sounds like something I would enjoy reading. (Sarah DeLong 6:38pm March 4, 2022)
This book sounds like the kind I enjoy reading. I like to read about characters that are believable in the situations they find themselves in (Joy Isley 11:42am March 5, 2022)
