The pulse-pounding galactic world of Extraction returns with EVOLUTION, the
final series installment, with more twists and turns than ever before. Author Stephanie Diaz is here to share
her thoughts on the new release and her own fangirl life.
Patricia: In EVOLUTION, our beloved Clementine and Logan must look beyond old
wounds and team up with their enemy to defeat a newly invading threat. For a teaser, can
you give readers a hint at which character is the most resistant to this temporary
truce?
Stephanie: I will say that of the two of them, the character who has a harder
time with the truce is not the one who has lost the most because of him. Instead, it’s
the character who has seen the other suffer at their enemy’s hands relentlessly, and
will not trust him even for a moment.
Patricia: Clementine and Logan are a strong couple that have been risking their
lives for each other since book one. (Swoon all around). What are some of your favorite
aspects of their relationship?
Stephanie: I love how their relationship grew out of a solid friendship before
anything else, and that the connection between them only deepens during trials and
separation. Both Clementine and Logan see the other as strong, capable individuals who
don’t necessarily need saving, though of course that doesn’t stop them from worrying
when the other ends up in danger.
Patricia: Since EVOLUTION is the series finale, has it been hard to bid farewell to
the
Extraction world and its characters? Do you have any new projects that are
helping you cope?
It has been somewhat hard to part with the world of Extraction,
but I’m really happy with how I ended Clementine and Logan’s story and I’m eager to dive
into new worlds and characters. In fact, I’m well underway drafting another project
right now—a YA fantasy. The most I can say is it is a blend of A Song of Ice and
Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean. :)
Patricia: Our sci-fi/fantasy lovers want to nerd out with you, so let’s play a
quick game of Would You Rather:
Be sorted into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw?
Stephanie: Gryffindor all the way.
Patricia: Pilot a Firefly ship or a TARDIS?
Stephanie: So hard! D: But Firefly ship.
Patricia: Live in Westeros or Middle Earth?
Stephanie: Middle Earth.
Patricia: Date Spike or Angel? (Buffy throwback!)
Stephanie: I actually haven’t seen Buffy (don’t hate
me please)…so…Angel?
Patricia: Rep Star Wars or Star Trek?
Stephanie: Star Wars.
Patricia: Thanks so much for being our guest, Stephanie. We have one more
question for you: What’s on your to-read list these days?
Stephanie: Up next on my list is QUEEN OF SHADOWS by Sarah J. Maas. After that, ILLUMINAE by Amie
Kaufman and Jay Kristoff!
Stephanie Diaz first knew she wanted to be an author when she was in second
grade, sitting in a book club drinking tea and reading books like The Egypt Game. She
dreamed someday people might drink tea while devouring books she had written. She wrote
her first book soon after, a 30-page fantasy story--complete with a hand-drawn map--
stapled together and presented to her younger sister for a birthday present.
Now twenty-two years old, she lives in San Diego with her family. She graduated from San
Diego State University with a degree in film production and a publishing deal for a
young adult sci-fi trilogy. She is the author of Extraction and the forthcoming
Rebellion and Evolution.
When she isn't lost in other worlds, she can be found singing, marveling at the night
sky, or fangirling over TV shows.

Clementine's world is on the brink of destruction. An army of aliens from the
distant planet Marden has arrived with a massive fleet of battleships, intent on finally
putting an end to the war Kiel's old rulers initiated.
With the Alliance headquarters reduced to rubble and one of the rebel leaders close to
death, Clementine and her friends have no choice but to retreat to the Core to escape
the alien ships attacking the Surface.
But safety in the Core means forming a temporary alliance with their sworn enemy,
Commander Charlie. He's a ruthless man and a liar, but striking a bargain with him--his
pardon in exchange for their help defeating the Mardenites--is the only way the rebels
might survive the war.
And Charlie needs their help too, for Marden's force is more powerful than anyone
anticipated, with weapons and technologies never before seen on Kiel. Unless old feuds
can be set aside long enough for a diplomatic solution to be found, all of Kiel's people
will be destroyed, and everything Clementine and her friends have sacrificed in their
fight for peace will have been for nothing.
