This has been a great summer for science fiction and fantasy. My reading
pile is huge, but I can't stop
adding more books. This week, I'm taking a look at three novels that promise
epic-scale action along with
those life and death struggles that make these genres shine.
Here I go again with my post-apocalyptic
recommendations. What
drew my attention here was the fate of the world appears to rest in the
hands of a killer. His companions
include a cop (that alone should make for some interesting conflict) and a
mother. I have a feeling this one
will hit me hard.
About: A meteor strikes the
Earth. Dirt and dust fill the air. Only a few people remain under the
setting skies, and those who still live
find it's not God's England anymore.
It's the Devil's turn.
Lines are drawn between the dark and light. For the darkness, James Finley
and his cult for the end of days.
On the side of light, Paul Deacon, the lost policeman, and Dawn Graves, the
last mother.
To survive, they must put their lives in one man's hands: Frank Liebowicz, a
killer with a soft spot for lost
causes. Because come Armageddon, God won't choose his champions.
Siblings fighting, and a terrible sacrifice?
I'm in! Few things scream
emotional fallout than an epic battle where brothers are at odds. I'm eager
to jump into this story because
that blurb has a heck of a hook.
About: The shadow of war.
A clash of brothers. A terrible sacrifice. In the face of powerful darkness,
who will prevail?
The island of Seare is at war. The Red Druid is gathering strength and power
to stand against Conor,
Eoghan, and the brotherhood. But there is strife within the brotherhood as
well. Eoghan still refuses to
claim his rightful rule, and the resulting conflict creates an uncomfortable
distance between him and
Conor. When Conor leaves to find the key to defeating the Red Druid, Eoghan
and Aine worry he will
succumb to the danger. They set out on their own mission to defeat the Red
Druid through Aine’s magical
gifts.
Bring on the elves! This is a translated
work of a popular German
fantasy author I'm unfamiliar with, but that only ramps up my curiosity.
Humans and elves joining forces
against a demon? Yeah, I'm ready for the cultural clashes and a bit of magic
and mythology.
About: A fierce and
merciless demon has been unleashed on the world, spreading destruction and
bloodshed in both the
human and the elven realms. Northlander Jarl Mandred witnesses the ruthless
attack on his men, and he
seeks vengeance with the help of the elf queen, Emerelle. Despite Mandred’s
barbaric human nature, the
queen orchestrates an elfhunt joined by the two strongest warriors in
Albenmark to pursue the beast.
Farodin, the fiercest fighter in the land, and Nuramon, the healer, seize
the opportunity to make history
alongside Mandred in a life-defining series of battles waged in parallel
universes.
THE ELVEN is an epic tale, bringing heroes together across the boundaries of
their worlds to avenge past
losses and influence fates yet to be decided.
