Unlike Kate Douglass, my heroine in REVENGE BEST SERVED
HOT, I’m not much of car
enthusiast, classic or otherwise. I see the vehicle I drive as a means of
transportation, a way to get my kids and all their stuff from Point A to Point
B.
Don’t get me wrong. I like a nice ride. (And who doesn’t like that new-car
smell?)
But you’re not likely to find me at a local car cruise or one of the big annual
auto shows. What’s under the hood of a classic muscle car simply doesn’t excite
me.
My husband, on the other hand, has a far greater appreciation for anything that
comes with four wheels and an engine. Maybe it’s because he grew up in Flint,
Michigan, also known as Vehicle City and the birthplace of General Motors. Or
maybe
it’s because he’s an engineer who has worked in the auto industry his entire
adult
life. Either way, he knows his cars. And he likes them.
When we met, in addition to the manly pickup truck he drove daily, he owned a
sleek
and sexy, cherry red Corvette. I didn’t know about “her” until he and I had
been
dating for a while, though. Apparently, he didn’t want me to use him for his
hot
ride. As if. Anyway, he loved that car. He babied her. He kept “her” covered
when
“she” wasn’t on the road. “She” was spotless inside and out. And under “her”
hood?
Nary a spot of grease or grime.
But as happens in any love triangle, one of us had to go. My husband is, at
heart,
a practical man. He knew which one of us was going to keep him warm on cold
winter
nights. So, “she” was sold and the money from the sale was used as a down
payment
on our first house.
That was more than 20 years ago. My husband and I have long since moved to
another
house and adopted two wonderful boys. But to this day he recalls that car with
great affection and, yes, longing. In fact, he still has a framed photograph of
“her”—which I removed from his bedside table and relegated to a shelf in our
walk-
in closet a while back.
Am I jealous? Nah. “She” may hold a special place in his heart, but in the end
I
got the guy!
