I like to believe that the speculative fiction community is a welcoming one.
Every week, there seem to be new storytellers emerging in spec-fic genres,
offering a feast of creative tales to hungry readers like you and me.
Last week’s column focused on fond and familiar authors, so this week, I am
pleased to introduce three debut authors that caught my attention. If you are in
the mood to sample something new, this week’s picks are for you.
Who knows? In the not-so-distant future (cue camera shots of electric hovercars
and Stark-style computing systems), these authors could turn from rising stars
to seasoned moguls, and you have the chance to discover them first. Come on,
slip on your hipster glasses and get ahead of the trends.
LOVE IN THE AGE OF MECHANICAL REPRODUCTION by Judd Trichter
How far would you go to save someone you
love? That is the question asked in Judd
Trichter's debut sci-fi romance, in
which the hero must track down the stolen pieces of his beautiful android lover
to reassemble her. With the flair of a noir and a fantastical futuristic
setting, LOVE IN THE AGE OF MECHANICAL REPRODUCTION questions the
nature of love and offers countless thrills in its pursuit of answers.
About:
Bad luck for Eliot Lazar, he fell in love with an android, a beautiful C-900
named Iris Matsuo. That’s the kind of thing that can get you killed in late 21th
century Los Angeles or anywhere else for that matter – anywhere except the
man-made island of Avernus, far out in the Pacific, which is where Eliot and
Iris are headed once they get their hands on a boat. But then one night Eliot
knocks on Iris’s door only to find she was kidnapped, chopped up, sold for parts.
Unable to move on and unwilling to settle for a woman with a heartbeat, Eliot
vows to find the parts to put Iris back together again—and to find the
sonofabitch who did this to her and get his revenge.
With a determined LAPD detective on his trail and time running out in a city
where machines and men battle for control, Eliot Lazar embarks on a bloody
journey that will take him to the edge of a moral precipice from which he can
never return--from which mankind can never return.
Writers of the Future grand prize winner Randy
Henderson has penned a tale praised for its dark yet quirky qualities. I
think if John Hughes directed a paranormal mystery, FINN FANCY
NECROMANCY would be it. This creepy, quick-paced, and surprisingly charming
debut proves that Henderson is a writer to watch.
About:
Finn Gramaraye was framed for the crime of dark necromancy at the age of 15, and
exiled to the Other Realm for twenty five years. But now that he’s free,
someone—probably the same someone—is trying to get him sent back. Finn has only
a few days to discover who is so desperate to keep him out of the mortal world,
and find evidence to prove it to the Arcane Enforcers. They are going to be very
hard to convince, since he’s already been convicted of trying to kill someone
with dark magic.
But Finn has his family: His brother Mort who is running the family necrotorium
business now, his brother Pete who believes he’s a werewolf, though he is not,
and his sister Samantha who is, unfortunately, allergic to magic. And he’s got
Zeke, a fellow exile and former enforcer, who doesn’t really believe in Finn’s
innocence but is willing to follow along in hopes of getting his old job back.
Viola
Carr's debut novel is a perfect concoction of steampunk fantasy, forensic
mystery, and dark romance. This twisted, gritty retelling of Robert Louis
Stevenson's horror classic captures the unsettling sensation of the original,
while sporting enough edge to keep 21st century readers tearing through its pages.
About:
In an electrified Victorian London, Dr. Eliza Jekyll is a crime scene
investigator, hunting killers with newfangled technological gadgets. She will
need every advantage available to catch a terrifying new psychopath splattering
London with blood. Hidden in the grimy shadows, the fiendish murderer preys on
beautiful women, drugging them before slicing off their limbs. Finding the
“Slicer” can make Eliza’s career . . . or unmask her darkest secret. Like her
father, she has a hidden second self that emerges when she drinks his forbidden
magical elixir. Just a few sips, and a seductive and impulsive Lizzie Hyde is
unleashed.
The members of the Royal Society do not trust Eliza, and they send their
enforcer, the mercurial Captain Lafayette, to prove she’s a dangerous sorceress.
The careful doctor knows that one wrong step can make her prey to the clever
Lafayette, a man who harbors an evil curse of his own. No matter how much she
craves the elixir, she must resist.
But as the Slicer case draws her into London’s luminous magical underworld,
Eliza will need the potion’s power to help her . . . even if it might attract
the attentions of Lafayette. .
Even if it means setting the wild Lizzie free. . . .
