Summer is a distant memory, the temps are cooler and the leaves are piling up
in our yard. Sorry to say, I didn't get a lot of personal reading done in
October. Allen and I took off for a week and drove through the Ozarks enjoying
all the beautiful fall colors. Upon returning, I had six big tubs of mail and
deliveries that took me several days to sort through. I love vacations, but
playing catch-up when I get back is taking longer as I get older. Well, enough
of my moaning and groaning. Here's my recommended reading -- COVER OF NIGHT by
Linda Howard.
This was an intense romantic suspense that really kept my interest. The setting
is a small rural community in Idaho, accessible by only one road. This by itself
adds to the atmosphere immensely even before you blend in all the realistic
characters, good and bad. In my estimation, there are several heroes and
heroines in this novel, which added even more enjoyment to this great read.
After last month's "Tanzey Talk" was posted and distributed, I got an e-mail
from Karen
Robards concerning her Regency romance, SHAMELESS, that I told you would
be released the end of December 2006. Karen had this to say, "Unfortunately,
SHAMELESS has been postponed until later in 2007 -- no exact date has been
chosen yet. The fault is mine -- I haven't yet finished the book. I had to take
a break to write OBSESSION, my latest romantic suspense, which will be out in
hardcover in April 2007. As soon as Karen lets me know when it's on the
schedule, I'll pass the word along to you.
After almost three years since her
last book, Catherine
Spangler returns January 2007 with TOUCHED BY DARKNESS from Berkley
Sensation. During her hiatus from the writing scene, Cathy made the decision to
write something different after five futuristic romances. She says it took her
awhile to "reinvent" herself, create a new type of paranormal series (this one
about Sentinels and set on current-day Earth) and to find a new publisher. Her
idea for the Sentinels came from her life-long fascination with Atlantis. The
Sentinels are reincarnated Atlantians, the same souls who were priests and high
priests serving in the temple on Atlantis. The Sentinels have returned to Earth,
taking on human bodies and superhuman abilities, in order to track down Belians,
also reincarnated Atlantians, who worshiped dark forces and destroyed Atlantis.
Sentinels have a slight edge over the Belians because they can use human
conductors to enhance their psychic tracking abilities. And a human conductor
who psychically matches a Sentinel is always the opposite sex (of course!).
Sounds like an intriguing concept. Book two in the series, titled TOUCHED BY
FIRE, is scheduled for release in October 2007.
When I heard that Alesia Holliday
sold a humorous paranormal series to Berkley about Suzi Stiletto, the demon
slayer from the anthology BEWITCHED, BOTHERED & BEVAMPYRED, I had to find
out more. This is what Alesia told me, "I'm excited about it - I loved
writing Suzi and am looking forward to writing a series about her. Her first
book, tentatively titled VAMPS GONE WILD, will be out in early 2008. Her friend
Jimmy the cricket and the hottie ex-demon who wants to be Suzi's eternal love
slave are on board for the wild adventure! Suzi travels to her new territory in
Florida and her first task is to deal with a group of 200-year-old vampires who
don't understand the Civil War is over." Coming up sooner for Alesia is a
new paranormal romance series about Atlantis called the Warriors of Poseidon.
Written under her pseudonym, Alyssa Day, the
first book is titled ATLANTIS RISING and is set for release in March 2007, also
from Berkley.
Barbara
Freethy recently signed a new contract with NAL/Penguin for two more
contemporary romantic suspense novels that will be coming out in early 2008.
Susan Krinard
has turned in her first vampire/werewolf romance, CHASING MIDNIGHT. She says
it's set during the Roaring Twenties and will be the first of several vampire
and werewolf stories during the period. It should be released in the fall of
2007. From that point on, Susan hopes to have a book out every six months or so.
Linnea
Sinclair has informed me that the final edits on her long-awaited sci-fi
romance, GAMES OF COMMAND (Bantam Spectra), are done, and the release date is
set for February 27, 2007. For those of you familiar with her out-of-print
Alliance Command series, GAMES OF COMMAND begins in a similar fashion to her
earlier book, COMMAND PERFORMANCE, but she says most of it is new. Finally,
readers will have answers to their questions concerning Sass and the admiral
(and the furzels!). Linnea is also delighted that her cat, Daiquiri, is featured
on both the front and back cover art.
Christine
Feehan's newest GhostWalker book -- CONSPIRACY GAME (Jove) -- went on
sale October 31, 2006. I just found out that the fifth book in this exciting
paranormal series will be titled DEADLY GAME (Jove) and is set for release
February 2007.
Marjorie M.
Liu's latest e-newsletter included her 2007 schedule, which thus far
includes three anthologies, as well as the sixth installment in her Dirk &
Steele paranormal romance series -- SOUL SONG (Leisure) -- set for release in
July 2007. Marjorie says there might be one more book in the line-up, but that's
not definite yet.
Fans of Roxanne St.
Claire's will be happy to know that she's signed a new deal with Pocket
to write a trilogy connected to her popular bodyguard series, the Bullet
Catchers. Roxanne tells me, "This time all three will be linked by more than
just the high-end security and investigation firm. All three books, which will
all be released in 2008, will share a connected story arc. Although they will
each stand alone, the stories will include an overarching mystery that deepens
with every book and is solved at the very end."
In February 2007, Berkley Sensation will release in trade format a collection
of previously published novellas by Maggie Shayne into
one volume titled SHEER PLEASURE. Included will be Leather and Lace (from
SINFUL, Jove, 1/00), Awaiting Moonrise (from HOT BLOODED, Jove, 12/04)
and Daydream Believer (from MAN OF MY DREAMS, Jove, 11/04).
In December 2006, the fifth book in Cindy Gerard's The
Bodyguards series goes on sale. Titled UNDER THE WIRE, it tells the story of
Manny, former SF soldier who served alongside Ethan in South America. He joins
E.D.E.N. Inc. after a career crisis and runs into a woman from his past who
needs his help. Then in June 2007, the sixth Bodyguards installment is set for
release. INTO THE DARK will be Dallas and Amy's story. Dallas rescued Amy from
the jungles of Jolo Island, and then she vanished from his life. Now she's back,
asking more of him than may be possible to do.
Catherine Mulvany
has turned in the manuscript for her next novel, SOMETHING WICKED, which
is due to be released next summer by Pocket. She laughingly calls it her
"vampire biker dudes book." Her 2005 book, SHADOWS ALL AROUND HER, is set to be
reissued by Pocket Star on December 26, 2006. The new edition will include an
excerpt from SOMETHING WICKED, so if you're wondering why she refers to it as a
"vampire biker dudes book," you can find out then.
After hearing that Christina Dodd was
writing a paranormal series, in addition to her other books, I contacted her for
the scoop. Here's what she told me, "I'm writing four books a year, which is
ridiculous, but I wanted to write a paranormal series and the only way I could
figure out to do it in a decent time was to take a break from the historicals
and add an extra book. The first two books are scheduled for July and August
2007." She's just finished the first one, and claims she's having way too
much fun writing them. "Mine are very hot, fun romances set in the modern
world, except the heroes have a tendency to shapeshift. Because of a deal with
the devil. And they, unfortunately, are the ones chosen to break it." It's a
four-book series dubbed Darkness Chosen, and the first title is SCENT OF
DARKNESS. In the meantime, the second book in Christina's contemporary Fortune
Hunter romantic intrigue series, TONGUE IN CHIC (Signet), is scheduled for
release February 2007. The first book was TROUBLE IN HIGH HEELS (Signet, 8/06).
For those of you who were wondering why you couldn't find a copy of WICKED
PLEASURE (Berkley Sensation) by Nina Bangs in June
2006 (when it was to be originally released in trade paper format), I'm pleased
to tell you that it will finally go on sale February 6, 2007, as a mass-market
paperback with a newly designed cover. This is the second book in Nina's Castle
of Dark Dreams trilogy, with the final book, titled WICKED FANTASY, scheduled
for release in May 2007.
December 26, 2006, is the on-sale date for Julie Garwood's
newest hardcover suspense, SHADOW DANCE (Ballantine). This time fan favorites
Jordan Buchanan and Noah Clayborne finally star in a book of their very own.
January 2007 will
bring several new hardcover releases from favorite authors. January
2nd will be THE HUNTERS (Putnam) when W.E.B. Griffin
brings back Delta Force Major Charley Castillo for a third adventure. Slated to
go on sale January 16 is DEEP STORM (Doubleday), a stand-alone novel for Lincoln Child,
(known for his bestselling collaborations with Douglas Preston),
which is set 12,000 feet below the North Atlantic ocean. It's about an
archeological discovery that could prove to be one of the most terrifying in
history. Also set for release on January 16 is Jayne Anne Krentz's
newest Arcane Society novel, WHITE LIES (Putnam). The heroine is a Level Ten
para-sensitive and considered a human lie detector, which gives her problems
when it comes to any types of relationships, especially when she finds herself
in an investigation with an unusual man.
There are a lot more great books to come in 2007, so stayed tuned...
