Daily Dose Holiday Blog Giveaway: 13 to XMas

Today, I would like to introduce you to a new author who's novel is coming out next summer. Author Shannon Delany of the upcoming 13 TO LIFE (YA paranormal series from St. Martin's Griffin, June 22) created this bookmark for our Daily Dose Holiday Blog Giveaway. The bookmark features hematite (the small silvery beads), pietersite (the larger lozenge-shaped blue bead) and two sparkly beads (because if it's YA and paranormal it has to sparkle. The gemstone beads are significant; the blue pietersite is specifically tied in to part of Shannon's debut novel and specifically symbolic.

To quote from the book, Jess Gillmansen (Shannon's narrator) says:

"It's also called Tempest Stone. People say it's good for a lot of stuff, like dealing with change and transformation. Oh. And your gall bladder, I think. Or spleen." I shrugged, slipping it back into my pocket. He definitely looked interested now. Maybe he had spleen issues.

Since writing her novel, blue pietersite has become increasingly difficult (and expensive) for Shannon to get, so this book mark is one of a very limited quantity that Shannon will be gifting.

About Shannon Delany

She began writing in earnest when her grandmother fell unexpectedly ill during a family vacation. In 2008 her greatly abbreviated version of 13 to Life (written in just five weeks) won the grand prize in the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world through Textnovel.com .

Shannon was thrilled when St. Martin’s Press offered her a contract for a series about her 13 to Life characters. She expanded on the cell phone novel version, adding the subplots and characters she didn’t have time to during the contest. As paranormal as werewolves seem, the grief Shannon used to build Jess’s character is something she personally experienced with the loss of her own mother. Focusing on Jess and Pietr’s story of loss, love and dramatic and dangerous changes, Shannon came to better grips with her own struggle. The resulting novel has earned her blurbs from authors she respects most.

Previously a teacher and now a farmer raising heritage livestock, Shannon lives and writes in Upstate New York and enjoys traveling to talk to people about most anything.

13 to Life

Something strange is stalking the small town of Junction…

When junior Jess Gillmansen gets called out of class by Guidance, she can only presume it’s for one of two reasons. Either they’ve finally figured out who wrote the scathing anti-jock editorial in the school newspaper or they’re hosting yet another intervention for her about her mom. Although far from expecting it, she is relieved to discover Guidance just wants her to show a new student around—but he comes with issues of his own including a police escort.

The newest member of Junction High, Pietr Rusakova has secrets to hide--secrets that will bring big trouble to the small town of Junction—secrets including dramatic changes he’s undergoing that will surely end his life early.

I like reading about teenage angst and worries. Throwing in the twist about werewoves makes it very current with the vampire craze.

Shannon, good luck with your book and I
hope you write many more. Although I
was a teen a long time ago I still enjoy
reading this type of story.

I'd love to give this book to my daughter who is a teen. Misery loves company, reading about teen angst will help her to realize she's not alone.

I would love to give this to my daughter. She is only 11 but she is such a voracious reader and quite advanced in her reading skills.

This would be a good book for my grandson-in law, who is a 6th grade teacher. He supplies most of the books for his classroom library, with the hope that he can open the world of reading to his students! Good luck in your writing & Happiest of Christmas & New Years!!

What a lovely bookmark. Would love to win this for a dear friend who is going to the hospital at the end of this month because she has to have essential surgery to remove cancer cells. I am sending her a care package including a book or two and would love to send this bookmark as well to help pick up her spirits while she is recovering at home. I love to read YA novels and will definitely have to look for this one when it is released.

I would like this for my granddaughter, who is just showing an interest in reading. I think that this would be an additional encouragement for her. Thank you!
(Rosemary Krejsa 9:12pm December 14, 2009)

This would be a great bookmark for my great-neice. She is the best little girl in the worl.

Since I don't have any nieces or great-nieces that fit the profile, I'd like to donate any book to our local "A Book for Every Child" campaign. It's especially hard to find books for this age group and I think it's so important to get young people reading and keep them off the streets at night.

I love giving books as gifts and my one year old grandson is already an avid read me to me kid.
(Sheryl Holden 9:56am December 15, 2009)

hello i would loveot add her to my collectionof book and i in joy reaidng alot since i am been sick al monthlong
(Desiree Reilly 10:58pm December 16, 2009)

I would love to gift this to myself as I am a high school teacher and love to read about teen angst and all that kind of stuff. You'd think I get enough of it at school but I am an avid reader and a read advocate for literacy and I often talk about what I am reading. It still amazes me when I see students reading books that I recommend. If I had to gift this, I would give it to a friend who is also a high school teacher (who would then lend it back to me so we would both win).
