Kimberly Frost | When In the World Would You Go?

I’d imagine that I’m like a lot of readers in that I love the way that fiction
transports me to different times and places…to different worlds where the laws
of physics and nature need not apply or where the laws of “good society” do.
Regency England and the Scottish Highlands. Sunnydale and Salem. Hogwarts,
Narnia, and Middle Earth… When I began the Southern Witch series, I knew that I wanted a small town
setting with eccentric, charming characters, but I also realized that since the
series contains magic, I could incorporate other elements. Here’s a brief exchange from Book 1 between Tammy Jo Trask, small-town girl and
Would-Be Witch,
with the family ghost, Edie: * * * I stole a glance at Edie’s exquisite
face. With porcelain skin and high cheekbones, she was prettier than a china
doll. She wore her sleek black hair bobbed, either straight or waved, depending
on her mood and her outfit. Her lips were painted a provocative cherry red
today. Rumor had it that Edie had inspired men to diamonds…and suicide. It was
generally accepted in my family that one of her jilted beaus had murdered her,
but she never shared the details of the 1926 unsolved New York homicide of
which she’d been the star.
“How are you?” I asked. “I’m dead. How would you be?”
I opened my mouth and closed it again. I
had no idea. Was it hard being a
ghost? Was it boring? She was very secretive about her life, er, afterlife. “What made you visit today?” I asked,
still trying for polite small talk. “I heard you quit your job. I decided to
visit in the hope that you might be
turning interesting.” I frowned. Edie could be as sweet as
honey on toast or as nasty as a bee
sting. “I’m so sorry,” I said. “For a minute I forgot that this isn’t my life.
It’s your entertainment.” Her peridot eyes sparkled, and she
favored me with a breath-taking smile. “Did
I ever tell you about the time I stole a Baccarat crystal vase from the editor-
in-chief of Vanity Fair and gave it as a present to Dorothy Parker? I liked the
irony. He fired her, you know.” “Who was the editor?” “Exactly,” she said with a smile. “Being
jobless isn’t such a bad thing. You
just need a present to cheer you up. As luck would have it, one is on the way.”
* * * Researching the 1920s for this story was great fun, but if I could find a good
time-travel tour, I would definitely go to New York in the guise of a flapper

Since it can be any historical place, I'd go to Atlantis (before it disappeared, of course, unless the trip comes with the ability to breath underwater or in a vacuum).

Favorite fictional place would've been the setting in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon. Favorite period of time would be to just go back to 1975 when I graduated from high school and make some different choices.

I would love to visit the old wild, wild west. It's surely not a time I would have liked to live in, but it would be fun to visit some of the people, especially the women who were so strong and capable and helped build the towns.

Okay, the germaphobe in me has to answer, first. The past was kinda filthy. I like my modern medicines and antibiotics. Also, I would get a lot of people in the past really sick with my modern germs.
Okay, the adventurous part of me would like to see ancient Egypt (they used honey to cure stuff) or live in Jasper Fforde's BookWorld.

Favorite fictional place would be Hogwarts - I know, not too original but it's the first thing I thought of and dang... it's, it's... it's Hogwarts!
For historical setting, I'd like to go back to medieval times to see what it was really like...um...after the plague of course :) But I'd just like to be a fly-on-the-wall observer cause let's face it, it wasn't an easy time to live in!...and probably a bit stinky too ;) Note to self: bring nose clips.

Probably the Scottish Highlands. The
time period would be hard, they
always seemed to be at war. Before
the 1700's, since it would only be for
a couple of weeks. The late 1800's to
the first decade of the 1900's in just
about anywhere would be interesting.

I see my original post was on Saturday 3/14 but the contest seems to be dated to start on 3/16. So, I'm posting again just to be sure I'm qualified for the drawing. And I'd still like to spend time at Tara. I have a strong facination for Antebellum homes and plantations. Natchez with it's multitude of surviving pre-civil homes is one of my favorite places to visit.

I think it would be so awesome to travel across America in the late 1800's at the turn of the century, as a well-to-do lady, of course! To me that was such an exciting time - the very beginning of the modern age! Women were starting to emerge and be recognized as independant thinkers, but they still dressed, and were treated, like ladies. There were amazing changes going on and amazing inventions were being unveiled every day.
