Elizabeth Otto | Small Town Craziness

Every small town has its quirks.

The tiny town I grew up in gave kids buckets of live fish to throw in the lake during the fireworks display on the 4th of July. Okay, that only happened once, but, seriously? Where else but a small town can you restock the perch supply while watching a show?

My new release, CAN’T RESIST A COWBOY, takes place in the small ranching community of Greenbrook, Montana. These cowboys know how to party. All night bonfires, riding their horses in the bar, and chicken tossing are just a few of the crazy things they do.

But let’s not forget the award winning Ball Burners picked peppers, made by the hero, Levi’s mother. Your state fair has never seen hot peppers quite like this:

Stacked green jalapeños, red tabasco peppers, whole garlic cloves, and yellow habanero peppers, surrounded by brown dill heads.

Sounds nummy, right? They are, if you like your tongue to bleed. The recipe I used for the book came from our old neighbor, a German woman whose recipes could broil your lips clear off your face. Her small town charm was such that she’s give you a plate of cookies to go with your peppers, you know, as a peace offering for nearly killing you.

See what I mean about quirks? No wonder small towns hold so much appeal in novels, and in real life. What’s the quirkiest thing you’ve ever come across in a small town?

About CAN'T RESIST A COWBOY

Injured and discharged, Marine Levi Haywood has returned to his family's ranch in order to heal and start a new life. After all, once a cowboy, always a cowboy. The only problem? Life at the ranch has moved on since he joined the service, and suddenly his role is much less clear. And things get a lot more confusing when his childhood sweetheart shows up.

Carrie Lynn Waite has never known a time when she didn't love Levi. They were childhood sweethearts, but because of her illness, she was forced to move to the city, away from the ranching life. Now Carrie's come home only to learn her family's ranch is in trouble and Levi is back, along with an undeniable attraction she can't resist. But some things never change. Now Carrie must decide between her future...and the cowboy she could never resist.

About Elizabeth Otto

Elizabeth Otto grew up in a Wisconsin town the size of a postage stamp, where riding your horse to the grocery store, and skinny dipping after school were perfectly acceptable. No surprise that she often writes about small communities and country boys. She's the author of paranormal and hot, emotional, contemporary romance, and has no guilt over frequently making her readers cry. When not writing, she works full-time as an Emergency Medical Technician for a rural ambulance service. Elizabeth lives with her very own country boy and their three children in, shockingly, a small Midwestern town.

Re: Elizabeth Otto | Small Town Craziness

Since moving to a small town, and a farming one at that,
there are a couple of quirky things that immediately came to
mind. The first one is that the stores close at 6 p.m. The
other thing is that the farmers that work the fields around
the property we happen to live on, start plowing and working
the fields with their huge tractors between 10 p.m. and
midnight. The first couple of years, it was a little hard
to try and fall asleep with the drone of these machines
going on for a couple of hours, but you get used to it in
time. I'm really looking forward to reading your latest
book. It sounds like perfect reading for this time of year.
Congratulations on your book!!
