This Valentine’s Day, remember the ones you love. The authors you love, that is.
Most avid readers have experienced this fall—the discovery of a new author that
led to a full-on love affair with his or her books. I
know you remember the sensation. You first spotted the name on a cover, not
knowing that author would change your life forever. You couldn’t resist opening
the book and reading what she had to say, or discovering what surprises he’d
planned for you. Before you knew it, you were infatuated with the voice, the
details, and the unique craft of your new crush.
Completely taken, you had to read more from that author, which kept you running
back no matter how many times she kept you waiting a year or more for the next
series installment, or no matter how many other guys tried to entice you away.
You may have dabbled in the affections of other authors, but you know to whom
your love is loyal.
This February, smitten readers are fortunate enough to see the return of several
beloved authors. Here are my picks of three to
swoon over this holiday.
TRIGGER WARNING: SHORT FICTION AND DISTURBANCES by Neil Gaiman
Whoever doesn’t go gaga for Gaiman must never have
read his work (or heard him speak, am I right?). His third haunting
collection, following SMOKE AND MIRRORS and FRAGILE THINGS, will captivate your senses and make you fall
in love with his luminous imagination all over again.
About:
In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the
enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. TRIGGER
WARNING includes previously published pieces of short fiction—stories,
verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth
anniversary of the beloved series in 2013—as well Black Dog, a
new tale that revisits the world of AMERICAN
GODS, exclusive to this collection.
TRIGGER
WARNING explores the masks we all wear and the people we are beneath them to
reveal our vulnerabilities and our truest selves. Here is a rich cornucopia of
horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry
that explore the realm of experience and emotion. In Adventure Story—a
thematic companion to THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE—Gaiman ponders death and
the way people take their stories with them when they die. His social media
experience A Calendar of Tales are short takes inspired by
replies to fan tweets about the months of the year—stories of pirates and the
March winds, an igloo made of books, and a Mother’s Day card that portends
disturbances in the universe. Gaiman offers his own ingenious spin on Sherlock
Holmes in his award-nominated mystery tale The Case of Death and
Honey. And Click-Clack the Rattlebag explains the
creaks and clatter we hear when we’re all alone in the darkness.
A sophisticated writer whose creative genius is unparalleled, Gaiman entrances
with his literary alchemy, transporting us deep into the realm of imagination,
where the fantastical becomes real and the everyday incandescent. Full of wonder
and terror, surprises and amusements, Trigger Warning is a treasury of delights
that engage the mind, stir the heart, and shake the soul from one of the most
unique and popular literary artists of our day. (2/3/15; William Morrow)
THE AUTUMN REPUBLIC: Powder Mage Trilogy #3, by Brian McClellan
It’s hard to bid farewell to an epic series like
the Powder Mage Trilogy, but I’m sure we won’t have to kiss Brian
McClellan good-bye anytime soon. Until we find out what McClellan has in
store for us next, we can fan ourselves while reading this scorching finale.
About: In a rich, distinctive world that
mixes magic with
technology, who could stand against mages that control gunpowder and bullets?
The capital has fallen…
Field Marshal Tamas returns to his beloved country to find that for the first
time in history, the capital city of Adro lies in the hands of a foreign
invader. His son is missing, his allies are indistinguishable from his foes, and
reinforcements are several weeks away.
An army divided…
With the Kez still bearing down upon them and without clear leadership, the
Adran army has turned against itself. Inspector Adamat is drawn into the very
heart of this new mutiny with promises of finding his kidnapped son.
All hope rests with one…
And Taniel Two-shot, hunted by men he once thought his friends, must safeguard
the only chance Adro has of getting through this war without being destroyed...
As the title suggests, this collection features
short tales with the essential qualities we expect from Kate
Elliott’s finest works—strong, well-drawn heroines, compelling action, and
imaginative settings. Elliott continues to break new ground and make lasting
impressions on her readers, and this anthology is no exception.
About:
Elliott is a highly-compelling voice in genre fiction, an innovative author of
historically-based narratives set in imaginary worlds. This first, retrospective
collection of her short fiction is the essential guide to Elliott’s shorter
works. Here her bold adventuresses, complex quests, noble sacrifices, and
hard-won victories shine in classic, compact legends.
In The Memory of Peace, a girl’s powerful emotions rouse the
magic of a city devastated by war. Meeting in The Queen’s
Garden, two princesses unite to protect their kingdom from the blind
ambition of their corrupted father. While in Riding the Shore of the
River of Death a chieftain’s daughter finds an unlikely ally on her
path to self-determination.
Readers, whose writings are you pining for this Valentine's Day?
