Mystery Author Kate Carlisle on Giving Back to Readers

goodreadstwitterfacebookbookbubpinterestInstagram

Kate Carlisle is the New York Times bestselling author of the Bibliophile Mystery series, which launched in 2009 with HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER. The latest Bibliophile Mystery is ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE (Bibliophile Mystery book 5). The Bibliophile Mystery series follows San Francisco-based book expert Brooklyn Wainwright as she restores classic texts to their former glory, and solves contemporary murders linked to each book. Visit Kate online at www.katecarlisle.com.

I can't imagine not being a reader. Think about it. If you didn't have books in your life, how would you spend your time? What would you do? When you went to bed... what? You would just lie there, no book in your hand, no story in your head? You have a long wait at an airport with an even longer flight ahead of you and... no book? How do people do that?!

Pardon me while I pause to shudder. I do not want to live in that world.

One of the things I love best about reading is that, while the actual act of reading is a solitary one (except for story time at the library), reading is a very social activity. When we finish a good book, we pass it on to a friend with, "You'll love this!" We post reviews on websites or blogs. We give it a thumbs-up on Facebook. And if it's really good, we accost strangers at the bookstore, practically pleading with them to give it a try.

"At least read the first few pages!"

Readers form a true community, and that sense of community has enriched my life as a reader for as long as I can remember. Now that I'm a writer, I benefit in new and wonderful ways from readers who tell their friends about the Bibliophile Mystery series.

"You'll love Brooklyn Wainwright. She restores antique books, and her parents live in a commune, and every antique book has a murder connected to it, and Brooklyn has to solve the murders! The mysteries are funny, and they're smart. Oh, and there's a sexy guy in there, too. He's a British security expert. Think James Bond without the fear of commitment."

I think it's important for every member of a community to give back. As readers, it's our duty to spread the word about books we love. As a writer, I also have the duty to give my readers something extra to show my appreciation for their enthusiasm for my books. I do that through contests, such as the two contests I'm holding this month here on Fresh Fiction:

Kate Carlisle's mystery ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE Giveaway for Valentines (ends February 7th)

Kate Carlisle's $25 gift card giveaway to celebrate mystery ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE

I also wanted to give readers some bonus content on my website, so I created the page Brooklyn's World. On this page, Bibliophile Mystery fans can learn more about Brooklyn Wainwright, Derek Stone, and Brooklyn's slightly wacky family and friends. They can also see an interactive map with Brooklyn's favorite San Francisco hot spots... and the scenes of the crimes in the books. (I have to say, I am reeeeeally proud of that map. It's so FUN!)

When you visit authors' websites, do you enjoy discovering bonus content? What is the main reason that you visit an author's website? Have you ever won an author giveaway? If so, what did you win? What sort of prize would get you really excited?

By the way, for you puzzle aficionados, I'm also holding a contest on my website. Two lucky members of my mailing list will win this 513-piece jigsaw puzzle featuring the beautiful cover of ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE! Visit www.katecarlisle.com and join the mailing list for your chance to win!

Brooklyn Wainwright is San Francisco's bookbinder-cum-crime solver, with help from her James Bond-like boyfriend, Derek Stone.

Re: Mystery Author Kate Carlisle on Giving Back to Readers

I visit an Author's website to see if there are any books of theirs that I may have missed. I also like to learn about their background. I find it interesting, since some of them lead fascinating lives outside of the literary world. I don't always check out the bonus area of the website. It depends on how much time I have on that particular day and other factors. As far as winning goes, I have won in the past and won a gift certificate as well as a personalized book, which I cherish. I do like the personalized books a lot, and in this economy, the gift cards help out a lot, too!! I'm drawn to the cover of your book, as well as to the plot, and can't wait to read it.

I visit author's websites to see what they are writing now with excerpts, what's coming next and quite often their references to other authors that might interest us. I also enjoy their daily blogs full of little tidbits about their families and their lives. And also as a bonus, the unexpected winnings of books.
(Diane Sadler 8:26am February 1, 2012)

I really enjoy visiting an author's website mostly to discover more about them.
It's great to find out what other books they have written and simply what
makes them tick. It's neat to find out the little extras as the reader can then
understand a little more about what an author writes. The backgrounds of
authors would amaze many readers. Many have had very lucrative careers
before coming an author. I love to read what motivated an author to begin
writing. Before I retired, I would only find time to grab a book and read it
never taking much time to find out about this wonderful person that wrote the
book that gave me so much pleasure. Now, I have the time and have become
quite good friends with several authors. Yes, I have won several author
giveaways and each time it has thrilled me. I love to win a copy of an author's
book. Each is a treasure to me!

I'm excited to see you have a contest for a jigsaw puzzle at your website.
Other than reading, jigsaw puzzles are my passion. My husband and I love to
watch BBC Acorn Media mystery CDs and I'm always working a puzzle at the
same time. Can't just be idle you know!

Thank you for sharing this giveaway. I'm really looking forward to reading
"One Book in the Grave." I hope there will be something about the repair of
antique books as well. I would love to know the steps into how this is done.

All the best, Kate!

I visit different author's websites all the time. I like receiving their newsletters
and blogs too. I visit them for varying reasons. Sometimes it's to check the
order of books in a series, or to see what new books they have coming up
(and find out what their ISBN numbers will be!) I like to read the information
authors post about their family lives, and about how they came up with their
characters, etc.
I also like entering contests on author websites and blogs. I have won books
from them before, and I always get happy when I get a "You're the winner" e-
mail! I always read the books I receive, and then I pass them along to
someone else who can read and enjoy them as well. I also always try to post
a review of the book on the paperback website I belong to for other readers.
Thanks for the giveaway Kate! :)

Peggy, Thank you! I'm so glad the cover of ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE attracts you. I adore my covers! They're so homey and, well, cozy... as befits a cozy mystery. :)

I have a bio on my website. If you haven't read it already, I'll give you a hint... For years, I worked in TV. You'll have to go to www.katecarlisle.com to find out what shows I worked on. Fun times!
(Kate Carlisle 9:42am February 1, 2012)

Diane, I was SO bad about blogging regularly! My life just isn't that interesting to write something every day. I do blog with the Romance Bandits, though. We're a fun group! www.romancebandits.com

And, of course, I'm on Facebook just about every day. www.facebook.com/katecarlislebooks
(Kate Carlisle 9:44am February 1, 2012)

Connie, your post made me smile big time! I think you're going to love ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE because YES! there are some details on how antique books are repaired. I've taken bookbinding classes for years as a hobby, and my love for the book arts is what led me to start this series. I get comments frequently from readers who love learning something new, while enjoying a true whodunit.

Good luck in the contest for the jigsaw puzzle. On the Contests page on my website, please be sure to scroll down to see the Bibliophile Mystery word search booklet that you can send in for.
(Kate Carlisle 9:50am February 1, 2012)

Debbie, Thank you so much for your comment. It's good to know that readers enjoy personal glimpses into authors' lives. My family is actually pretty similar to Brooklyn's family in the Bibliophile Mystery series. If you've read any of the books, that will tell you something about me! If you haven't read them yet, then pick up ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE next week. After you read it, you'll say, "Oooooooooohhhhh! So THAT'S what she was talking about!" :)
(Kate Carlisle 9:54am February 1, 2012)

HI KATE. YOU ARE A NEW AUTHOR TO ME AND I SEE I NEED TO CATCH
UP!
(Linda Bass 12:02pm February 1, 2012)

Hey Kate!!! You know how much I LOVE Brooklyn, Derek and all the characters in the Bibliophile series!!

And yes, I love to find extra content on an author's website. The more time I spend there, the more I want to read more of the books by that author
(Suzanne Ferrell 12:30pm February 1, 2012)

I love Cozy Mysteries and have One Book In The Grave on my wish list. I do visit authors blogs and enter giveaways and have won a number of books in the last few yrs. The latest was 3 Cozies, Plan Bee, Royal Pains and It Takes A Witch a Bookin' With Bingo blog. I am looking forward to receiving and reading.
(Brenda Hill 12:39pm February 1, 2012)

Hi, Linda! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! I love hearing from new readers. :) Enjoy! You can read the first chapter of all my books for free at www.katecarlisle.com.
(Kate Carlisle 12:45pm February 1, 2012)

Hi, Suzanne! Thank you so much for stopping by! You're so sweet. See, this is EXACTLY what I mean about readers being a true community!
(Kate Carlisle 12:46pm February 1, 2012)

I enjoy visiting author websites to see what is new... I find additional content fun and always try my luck at contests. This looks like a great series to read... have to add it to my list!
(Colleen Conklin 1:33pm February 1, 2012)

When I visit author websites I'm often looking to see what books are coming out next. Sometimes I'm looking to see what older titles I can look for (to find the books from a series that I started in the middle or at the end), or just to find any other books the author wrote. I like to look at any bonus content on the site.
(Cheryl McEwen 2:51pm February 1, 2012)

Thank you for adding ONE BOOK IN THE GRAVE to your list, Colleen! I hope you'll love the story and that you'll enjoy getting to know Brooklyn Wainwright, bookbinder extraordinaire! I've just signed on to do three more Bibliophile Mystery books, in addition to the two coming out next year, so you'll have lots of fun reading ahead.
(Kate Carlisle 5:42pm February 1, 2012)

Cheryl, Thank you for your comments! I agree! It's very important that we authors make sure we keep our websites current so readers know what's coming up next, and the correct order for the books already available. I hope you'll check out my site. I think you'll get a real kick out of Brooklyn's map of San Francisco! I had so much fun putting that together!
(Kate Carlisle 5:43pm February 1, 2012)

What a nice post. If I love a book/author all of my friends (and even people I
see at work with books in their hands) hear about it. I love getting people
hooked on authors I enjoy.
I also stop by my favorite authors web pages, it is a good way to keep up to
date with new releases and get extra tid bits on new and old books. I love it
when I can find deleted scenes or pictures that inspired the author.
(Lexi Hansen 8:47pm February 1, 2012)

Hi Kate,
I won a Greek calendar for Tori Carrington's website once. I like to go to
author's sites to see what they are up to, read the bio and see all their books. I
also like bonus content.
(Tammy Yenalavitch 10:36pm February 1, 2012)

Can't disagree with the previous posts. I'm curious to know what makes an author tick as well read excerpts of their books. Been fortunate to win books from authors. My latest win was Mary Jane Clark's "The Look of Love." Receiving books in the mail is a real treat!
(Joanne Hicks 10:58pm February 1, 2012)

Oh, Lexi, see you're the kind of reader we LOOOOVE! I hope you'll love the Bibliophile Mystery series enough to tell your friends about it!
(Kate Carlisle 11:11pm February 1, 2012)

Hi Tammy! That's a fun prize! Hope you won the calendar toward the beginning of the year so you could enjoy it all year long. :)
(Kate Carlisle 11:12pm February 1, 2012)

Joanne, I love Mary Jane Clark's books! That is a fun prize! I hope you all will join my mailing list at www.katecarlisle.com for a chance to win my contests! Thanks for a fun day!
(Kate Carlisle 11:13pm February 1, 2012)

I visit author sites mostly to confirm when their next book is coming out and
what it's going to be. And if I'm lucky, theirs a bonus short story or an excerpt to
tide me over:) I've been fortunate to win several author contests for their books!
It was the best feeling to get a book in the mail from a favorite author, and they
even took the time to sign it:D
(Bella Franco 7:12am February 2, 2012)

btw, that puzzle is awesome! what a great way to have a pretty book cover
(Bella Franco 7:15am February 2, 2012)

I have loved your books since the moment I have found them. I have all of them except this latest one. I can't wait to read it. Thank you for appreciating the readers in all of us!
(Renee Brown 8:41pm February 2, 2012)

I go to author's websites to learn more about their books, and hopefully find excerpts to read, which, in turn, usually lead to my buying the book(s). I love finding out more information about the books, especially when it's a series. Learning the backstory, so to speak, just makes me want to purchase more of them!

Yes, I have also won author contests, and gotten a variety of things, but mostly books, which given my budget right now, are the best things! I have also won a Greek Calendar from Tony Carrington, along with a cookbook from another author here on Fresh Fiction ("The Best Of Kentucky" I believe it was. Haven't had a chance to make anything out of it yet, but that will happen, believe me!!).

And let me say, as the daughter of not one, but TWO librarians, and having been a librarian myself, this series of books definitely pushes all the right buttons with me!!

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 3:49pm February 3, 2012)

I visit author's websites to learn more about their writing process, tips, recipes, FAQ, blog, but mainly for the books.
Contests where you have to answer questions by reading the website and excerpts are fun.
(Alyson Widen 6:10pm February 3, 2012)

I am new to the computer but a forever fan of books. I have read the first four books in your Bibliophile series and loved them. The topic was so interesting that I actually contacted our community college to see if they offered any courses in it. Too my disappointment, they do not. The covers on your books are so beautiful that I have no trouble imagining them in leather. It's nice to pick up a book that you can lose yourself in,{and sometimes we are actually able to FIND ourselves}between those covers. Thanks for good reading.
