GETTING LAID by Vonna Harper is out today!
Enjoy this exclusive excerpt that we want to share with you to entice you into
this contemporary novella.
βI want to get laid.β
βI hate to point this out to you, honey, but youβve been out of the
dating game a long time. Your little black book has expired.β
βLike I ever had one. Kat, Iβm serious, Iβm about to jump out of my
skin.β Propelled by her words, Lisi Hallinan stalked to the window and stared
out at the overgrown yard. One good thing about hundred-plus-year-old
windowsβthey distorted reality, making the jungle-like growth easier to ignore.
βI had no idea I was so uptight. To know Iβm going to be able to get out from
under this pressure is a huge load off my mind. I can finally see beyond the end
of my nose and listen to what my bodyβs trying to tell me.β
βThe saleβs a sure thing? Real estateβs such a mess these days.β
βTell me about it. Why do you think Iβve been stressed? Get this. Itβs
an all-cash deal. I figure itβs some old fart with more money and nostalgia than
sense.β
βCash? Youβre shittinβ me.β
βYou think Iβd joke about this? Iβll give you all the details, but only
if you buy the first drink tonight.β
βYou drive a hard bargain. Okay, tonight it is. The Stagecoach? A little
after six.β
βOf course, the Stagecoach. As much as I plan on drinking, it has to be
within walking distance.β
βWhat about the rest of the gang?β
Lisi turned her back on the yard she loved but which in less than a
month would no longer be her responsibility and walked into the small kitchen.
The floor groaned. βKara and Callie are on board. I have a message in for Squeaky.β
βItβs looking good. With the gang checking out the merchandise, weβre
sure to find someone willing to scratch your itches. Glad to hear your hormones
are finally working again.β
That they are, in spades, Lisi acknowledged as she hung up. Going by her
fortunately limited experience of having only done it once, divorce was super
effective in shutting down the sex drive. Sheβd heard of women who became
nymphos before the divorce papers were signed, but not her. All sheβd wanted to
do was crawl into a cave and hibernate. Instead, sheβd been stuck in an aging
house with a for-sale sign.
And a job, donβt forget that.
Determined to forestall an unproductive session with her inner voice,
she deserted the kitchen for the living room and the stereo sheβd refused to
part with when her ex had insisted that half of the furniture was his. Yes, Neil
Diamond! A little Cracklinβ Rosie followed by a lot of Holy, Holy. Loud. As loud
as the old windows could stand.
Mr. Diamond belted. Lisi stood hugging herself and hoping she wasnβt
going to start crying. Get laid, that was what she needed. A one-night stand to
end all one-night stands.
The cell phone in her front jeans pocket vibrated, nearly causing her to
climax. Thinking it would be Squeaky, she connected.
βLisi?β a male voice asked. She had to strain to hear over the music.
βYes.β
βThis is Joe Roop. Iβm buying your house.β
βYouβre what? Just a minute. Let meββ She spun the stereo volume dial.
βThere. Now I can hear you.β
βI hope you donβt mind,β the unexpectedly deep and sexy male voice said.
βYour realtor gave me your number.β
Youβd heard I needed to get laid and you have a cock andβ βShe did? Is
there a problem?β
Joe whatever-heβd-said-his-last-name-was didnβt immediately answer. Her
stomach flipped over, then knotted. Not fair! A man with a sexy voice should not
be allowed to be the bearer of bad news.
βWith the offer?β he finally broke the silence. βI hope not.β
Sigh. βSo do I.β
βIβm jumping the gun, but what are you doing right now?β
Going a little crazy. βI donβt understand.β
βSorry. That didnβt come out the way I wanted it to. I happen to be just
down the street. Iβve already driven by twice and was tempted to take pictures,
but I didnβt want to startle you. Besides, what
Iβm really interested in
is the interior. Iβve started formulating plans for the renovation, but although
I took notes when I was there with my realtor, I really need photographs.β
This stranger with the nerve-tingling voice was a few doors away.
Sitting in his car. Talking to her. About renovation. Wanting to step inside and
stand next to her so she could see what he looked and smelled like.
Old fart? He didnβt sound like one.
βI donβt know,β she blurted, suddenly scared of the opposite sex. βIβm
getting readyβI have an appointmentββ
βWould tomorrow be better then?β
Tomorrow sounded like a million years away. Neil was still making his
musical presence known, and with every word Joe Whatever spoke, her skin was
becoming more sensitive. Given the current state of her system, she wasnβt sure
she trusted herself around the townβs seventy-five-year-old mayor.
What the hell! Six months of celibacy didnβt mean sheβd turned into a
cat in heat. She was conservative and competent, an asset to the townβs
government, or so the city council said. And at this moment, half-crazy.
βNo, no. Thatβs all right. I have a little time. This shouldnβt take
long, should it?β
βI donβt think so. But if you prefer I wait until your husband can beββ

version.
Opening the door and letting a tall,
dark stranger in? What could possibly go right? For uptight
Lisi, the answer is easy. A lot.
An impending

in-need-of-repairs house sheβs been living in. Fortunately,
sheβs found a suckerβoops, an older gentlemanβwhoβs willing
to take it off her hands. Except thereβs nothing old or
gentle about Joe Roop. Not only does he want the house, he
vows to bed the lovely seller.
Sometimes a man lets
his libido make all the moves. Sometimes a woman heeds the
same desire.
Itβs all good, great in fact.
