Victoria Vane | A Different Kind of Cowboy

websitepinterestiBookstwitterfacebook
A recent reviewer said it best when she described SLOW HAND as not your โ€œtypicalโ€ western romance. โ€œVane entwined the old west with the new west and gave us a whole new contemporary romance cowboy.โ€ Thereโ€™s no question that all of the heroes in my hot new contemporary Western series are cowboys, but the word โ€œcowboyโ€ doesnโ€™t define what a man does, it defines who he is. In SLOW HAND, Wade Knowlton is a workaholic lawyer and part time rancher whoโ€™s constantly at odds with his brother. Wade only sees the hardships and struggles of modern day ranching and wants to provide a comfortable retirement for his parents, especially after his fatherโ€™s triple bypass. In his interactions with the heroine, Nikki, however, he is a shameless flirt and a total charmer.

Excerpt from SLOW HAND

He crossed his arms over his broad chest and leaned on the door frame studying
her. โ€œMiz Powell, if I didnโ€™t know better, Iโ€™d think you were undressing me with
those pretty blue-green eyes of yours.โ€

A guilty flush infused her face but she refused to give him the advantage. She
opted for a strong offense instead. โ€œSo what if I was? Werenโ€™t you quite fixated
on my ass at Denver airport?โ€

He raised a sandy eyebrow. โ€œYou noticed that, eh?โ€ His confession came with a
shameless grin attached.

She jutted her chin. โ€œQuid pro quo, Counselor. What do you say to that?โ€

He approached her slowly, the smile in his eyes transforming in a blink to a
wicked gleam. A gleam that promised very bad things. His reply sent a warning
signal to every nerve in her body. โ€œIโ€™d say, why just use your eyes?โ€

In stark contrast to Wade, the hero of ROUGH RIDER is Wadeโ€™s hard-edged older brother Dirk. Restless and rebellious, he gave up a pro rodeo career to join the marines after 9-11 but returns home battle-scarred and bitter. He feels the ranch is all he has left and heโ€™s determined to hold onto it at any cost, which puts him at constant odd with his brother. It takes a special kind of woman to put this wounded warrior back together again.

Excerpt from ROUGH RIDER- coming February 2015

He rubbed the back of his neck and exhaled. โ€œI donโ€™t know how to go about this.
I donโ€™t know what you want from me, or how to give it to you. Iโ€™m fucking
clueless, Red, donโ€™t you see? You have no idea what youโ€™d be getting into.โ€ He
was trying to warn her off again but at the same time a flicker of hope seemed
to light in his eyes.

โ€œMaybe I know better than you think.โ€ She knew that if they got further
involved, their entire relationship would have to be rebuilt on a completely
different foundation from what theyโ€™d had before. But she was prepared for that.

โ€œThis has happened so damned fast,โ€ he said. โ€œYou gotta give me a little time to
learn the game. I donโ€™t even know the rules.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know all the rules either.โ€

He reached out for her hand and pulled her in close. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to go. Do
you think we can maybe just try playing this thing by ear?โ€

He looked so uncertain, so vulnerable.

She instantly relaxed against him. โ€œYeah,โ€ she replied. โ€œI think we could maybe
try that.โ€

He brushed his lips brusquely over hers. โ€œYou deserve a lot better than me, Red.
I canโ€™t promise you Iโ€™ll be worth it, but Iโ€™ll damn sure try.โ€

SHARP SHOOTER, the third book in this series, features Reid Everett, one of Dirkโ€™s buddies, a former Marine scout sniper and Wyoming hunting guide. Reidโ€™s nature is that of a protector to the core.

Excerpt from SHARP SHOOTER coming June 2015

โ€œYouโ€™re not perfect either, you know.โ€

โ€œNever said I was. But is there a particular imperfection that eats you?โ€

โ€œYes. There is. Why are you so damned unflappable? Doesnโ€™t anything ever get you
worked up?โ€

โ€œBesides you?โ€ He flashed a crooked grin that made her heart flutter.

โ€œIโ€™m serious, Reid.โ€

โ€œSo am I. I find you damned irritating, but Iโ€™ve learned to pick my battles.
Iโ€™ve also learned that there just arenโ€™t that many things worth getting riled up
about.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of things?โ€ she asked. โ€œWhat really and truly pisses you off?โ€

โ€œYou really want to know?โ€

โ€œYeah, I really do.โ€

โ€œDishonesty mainly. Liars, cheaters, manipulators. People who take advantage of
othersโ€™ vulnerabilities and misfortunes. Iโ€™ve got no use for โ€™em.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of people like that in the world,โ€ Riley remarked.

โ€œYou got that right. And they better not ever mess with me or mine.โ€

She chuckled. โ€œYou sound just like John Wayne when you talk like that. I can
picture you in the saloon, in the corner, eyeing the bad guy with your six shooter.โ€

He shrugged. โ€œI mean what I say, Riley.โ€ He pulled her closer. โ€œI protect whatโ€™s
mine.โ€

She lay snuggled under his arm with her head resting on his chest, listening to
the low and rhythmic beat of his heart. She murmured softly. โ€œTimes may change,
but I guess cowboys donโ€™t.โ€

***

I think that last line says it all!

Re: Victoria Vane | A Different Kind of Cowboy

After reading your posting, along with the excerpts, I can
see how you captured the essence of a cowboy to a T!! Every
book excerpt is good, and if I were to choose one, I
couldn't!! I'm looking forward to reading each one of them,
and will be putting them on my TBR list, for the upcoming
Winter reading, and looking for the others as they come out
in print. Thank you for coming today, and letting us know
about your books!! Thank you also for keeping the head on
your cowboy on your cover!! I think it adds to the sexiness
of your cowboy, instead of cutting him off, as so many
Authors seem to do lately.
