Ann Lawrence | A Recipe for a Holiday Tale

facebook

Let me start this blog by apologizing to those who read my November blog. I made a mistake in my Wassail recipe. Please click on the link to my blog: November 23, 2013
Ann Lawrence | Christmas in Savage Bay for the corrected recipe. Again, I sincerely apologize for the mistake.

Staying with this idea of recipes, I thought I'd use a recipe theme for this blog. What was the recipe I used to create CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY? Here it is:

CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY - A HOT AND HAPPY HOLIDAY READ

Ingredients:
Men in Kilts
Mistletoe
A Sled
Limericks
A Touch of Arson

Mix all of these ingredients together and you have my first contemporary holiday story. Let me explain each ingredient. Kilts first! When I read romance, I don't find that many Scottish guys unless the book is historical. I'm half Irish and half Scottish, so I decided to give my Scottish side a contemporary story. This allowed me to include a set of hot men who definitely wear their kilts well! They are the main ingredient!

The second ingredient is the mistletoe. Just as you can't have Christmas without a cookie, so you can't have a holiday romance without mistletoe! I have my first kiss take place under the mistletoe. No real surprise as what man--or woman--can resist a mistletoe opportunity?

The sled takes a bit more explaining. There was no sled in my story until I saw the book's cover art. I liked the sled but didn't want elements on the cover that weren't in the book, so rather than take the sled off the cover, I decided to write a sledding scene. It is now one of my favorite scenes in the book!

Limericks. The limericks are a surprise ingredient in the book's recipe. I planned no poetry for this book. Authors will agree with me that sometimes characters can take over a book and run off with the plot. Well, Reed Savage did just that, and it snowballed from there :) Here's what Reed said.

Excerpt from CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY... Set up: Reed Savage and Kara Sinclair are in the local bar. Reed wants Kara to accompany him to his room at a bed-and-breakfast named the "Bea and Bee."

"Say yes, Kara. Come to the Bea and Bee with me." [Reed said.]

"Very poetic."

"I can recite more if it will make you happy."

He watched her scan the room . . . No one seemed interested in them. Kara swung her gaze back to him and placed her hand on his thigh. The heat of her palm made his insides clench.

"Recite something now so I can judge what's in store for me," she said softly.

"There once was a man from Nantucket."

"Enough. I know the rest." She grabbed his hand, pulled him to his feet, and led the way to the door, snagging her vest from under a mountain on the rack.

Did Kara and Reed make it to the Bea and Bee? You'll have to read the book to find out! And I'm sure many of you are familiar with this limerick. As the book progresses, I have Reed make a few more poetic attempts. I'm not much of a poet, so I ran a limerick contest. The winner's limerick is recited by Reed in a special scene near the end of the story. So, an unexpected line out of Reed's mouth led to a theme of poetic moments throughout my story, both funny and touching.

What about that arson? I love reading, writing, and researching romance, but I also love a good mystery, so I could not resist mixing some crime into my book. Since CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY is Book 1 in my Savage Bay Series, the criminal "ingredient" will be present in the next two stories as well.

So that's my recipe for CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY. I deliberately stirred in the mistletoe. The limericks appeared on their own, the sled was a late addition, and the arson and the hot men in kilts are there to give each story the same flavor!

My family and I wish you a Happy and Healthy Holiday! May your stocking bulge with books!

In honor of the holiday, I'll be giving one lucky reader who leaves a comment on my blog an ebook copy of CHRISTMAS IN SAVAGE BAY (winner's choice of digital format).
