Angelica Hart | Writers Are Students Of People
September 24, 2009
When at a party where there are people I don't know, I am in an element that
instigates my imagination. What to say becomes the direct pay-off of how people
I meet make me feel or the situation of the moment. It can be like an improv
class. Of course it is appropriate but unexpected by most. But does it start
out that way? Nope! I sit back and study the group. I ask myself questions.
Why are those two together? What is she wearing beneath that dress... what
could she possibly be wearing... it is too sheer... could she be... naked? She
has to be naked. I know I could tell if she hadn't bikini waxed. I see a couple. I figure that they are young and in love. So what is the truth
of their youth? What does he smell like? What does she? How long did they
spend getting ready? What does she taste like when they kiss? Does she taste
different in public then in private? Who is alpha? Would she ask? Beg?
Take? Would he? Have they ever danced nude... at night... and in the rain...
why... why not? Does he naturally take her hand when people encroach? Does she
find protection from him? Does she glow? Does he? But do they glow apart? Is
there a kinetic attraction that is felt when they are separated? Could anyone
sense their affinity for each other? One of the greatest quotes that I heard uttered, moved me. "I saw her
across the room (at a party) and the only voice I heard was hers. Heard her all
night. So I had to meet her." Ten years later they are together. I find
myself compelled to understand attraction. I am drawn to that allure. So for a period of time I am a party voyeur and then I mingle. And try to
resolve my questions. While others dance, small-talk, and double-dip their
chips, I query. I'll ask the hostess how could she possibly pull that dress off
wearing undies? And if I am lucky she'll reply, "You want to pull that
dress off... and see?" We'd laugh but she'd tell me. And so the night
begins. Asking questions maybe everyone else wanted to ask. Doesn't Max
understand his toupee looks anything but natural? Hey bud, your merkin is
moving to high ground? Could Wayne have worn a shirt with more wrinkles? Own
an iron that works? And does Paula know every old geezer is ogling her blouse's
décolleté? Does she know she's nipus erecti? I bet she knows. Go Paula. I'll
ask. Taut Johnson of KILLER DOLLS was the
amalgamation of every popular man I saw at every party. Letti Noel was a
wallflower that spirited my imagination. When asked why the dour appearance she
replied, "Why is there a tail on an armadillo?" Wow an armadillo
reference. She made me instantly understand we are what we are. She was a
character. EXCERPT ONE
Call from Her to Him Taut keyed his phone after it signaled and spoke, “Taut!" His device was
hands-free allowing him to drive as he followed Rud through the Stanton streets. Letti, on the line, responded, “Letti misses you,” she said, returning his call,
loving his campy message, delighted he had called as he said he would, and
refusing to even question what stopped the fireworks the night before. “Does she?" He maneuvered his vehicle remaining clandestine. “Does Taut want to come out and play?” “Sounds like Letti needs a distraction." Taut smiled. “You are my distraction.” “Sweet, but… I was thinking about that one you keep in your bed stand.” “Gaa… what am I going to do with you? You are so naughty. You should be ashamed.” “Ashamed…for acknowledging that you are a healthy woman?” The mantle of embarrassment was surprisingly nonexistent and she quipped, “How
did you know I was in my bed?” * * *

Re: Angelica Hart | Writers Are Students Of People
I also watch strangers and wonder, but rarely ask! That is the difference between a good writer and me. That and the fact that I haven't tried to write a book - yet :>) (Karin Tillotson 11:14am September 24, 2009)
I love to people watch and think why, or what... I think it sparks my imagination. If only I could put it to good use, like writing a book. I'm just not that creative. (Theresa Buckholtz 3:10pm September 24, 2009)
I do catch myself looking at couples and try to guess what attracted one to the other, but you really study people. I'm sure you see more than I ever would. (Robin McKay 5:25pm September 24, 2009)
I think that most of us people watch. It is our natural curiosity showing. I would never have the nerve to ask but I would speculate. Thank goodness you have a creative imagination so you can provide me with great reading material! (Rosemary Krejsa 8:49pm September 24, 2009)
This is one reason why I enjoy most books: I find new ways of seeing people through a writer's eyes and mind. I find that I, myself, am much too logical to be intuitive enough to figure out what others may think or feel. It's definitely a skill I lack. (Sigrun Schulz 12:45pm September 25, 2009)
Karin, so, you’ve been wanting to ask? And what sort of questions do you have? Inquiring nosey-bodies want to know. Curiosity is a grand thing, it activates your mind, makes you observant which is conducive to new ideas, it brings excitement into your life because nothing is ever dull, and it opens up your world turning probability into possibility. If you have the yen to write… write… you already have the inquisitive mind and a computer. We’re certain you also are a brewing and bubbling cauldron of ideas. Zi says: Aren’t you a month early with the witch reference? Ang: Hey, Halloween is nearly picked over, there’s already Christmas on the retailer’s shelf. It is so… Zi: Ut oh, soap box time. Ang: We’re talking about soap? Zi: Actually, it’s all about Karin, you nearly forgot that! Ang: (Looks sheepish) Sorry. Thank you for the comment, Karin, great to hear from you. Write! (Angelica Hart Zi 9:52am September 25, 2009)
Hey Theresa, imagination is like doing crunches for the mind. It is the only place you can literally fly to the moons with actual wings, or win the lottery, or… oh you get the idea. So, if you can imagine, you are creative, if you are creative you can do anything you want to do whether it is writing a book or taking a painting class, or just reorganizing your calendar with flair and smiley faces. Just your being on a site all about books shows you have a well-exercised imagination with a bend for creativity. According to Jules de Gaultier, “Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality.” (Soon the recruiting armed services of the U.S. Forces of Imagine This and That will be at your door. No use trying to hide… they’ll find you) (Angelica Hart Zi 9:53am September 25, 2009)
Robin, hello, great to meet you. It is often quite fun to make up a couple’s romance. Heavens, they could be on a first date and we’d have them married five years with six children. Ang: Would not. Zi: Ok, seven. Ang: That’s better…. (Back to our commentators… who are us… but as… oh never mind) Zi is fully into studying human behavior, whereas, Angelica is fully into picking Zi’s mind about human behavior. They often banter back and forth about what if, why, how come, would they, wouldn’t they??? The only difference between us and you, Robin, is that it is our job to bring the reader the best reality our imaginations can supply. (Angelica Hart Zi 9:53am September 25, 2009)
You are so correct, Rosemary, about our natural curiosity. Sometimes, as our blog states, we tend to find obscure ways to sate that curiosity but speculation is more fun. Not to be confused with the buying, holding, and selling of stocks, commodities, futures… Although that could be quite fun if you have the courage and finances… There we go again, digressing. We meant, speculation as in the form of musing, pondering, lying… errr… making up plausible backgrounds. Ok… backtracking, we must admit lying in fiction is, well, what fiction is all about with a nice foundation of reality to base it upon. Ang: Did we digress again and again? Zi: Yup, you did that. Ang: Why didn’t you stop me? Zi: Does a bull pee downwind? Ang: Huh? Zi: Think about it. Rosemary, we are tickled to provide you reading material, that’s why we do it, to make you twitter and laugh and shiver and… and… and… Zi: What direction does a bull shat? (Angelica Hart Zi 9:54am September 25, 2009)
Hi Sigrun, what a wonderful way to view reading a book. Actually, Zi, is intensely logical, turtle-minded logical, has nothing on the Slowski family, and belongs to the Snail Logic Trail Society. It’s his logic that sees into the hearts, minds and souls of the characters. Angelica brings the spirit, that part that is intangible, for once Zi points out the logic, she unearths the illogical portions that exist in all humans. Being intuitive means having awareness and we suggest that logical people are the most aware of all. Ang: Too preachy. Zi: There you go with that dang soap box again. Give it to me! Thank you. Ang: Thank you for reading. (Angelica Hart Zi 9:54am September 25, 2009)
Thank you Fresh Fiction for giving us this opportunity to blog, and to interact with all these wonderful readers. As Zi always says, Read on! (Angelica Hart Zi 9:55am September 25, 2009)
