Throughout the
Shifter
Wars series, there is one character that is in the background, coming
forward when needed, and providing support to the shifters. Shoshannah is the
shifters' ancestral spirit. She lives in the Cave of Whispers and usually visits
any shifters that come to talk to her.
Shoshannah takes the form of a white light that evolves into whatever shifter
form is needed at the time. She's been a giant white bear, a mountain lion, a
wolf, a bird, and even a tiger. She gives advice to shifters seeking guidance,
but similar to the Oracle at Delphi, what she says isn't always clear to the
recipients. What exactly does it mean to hear that a character will change the
world? One thing we do find out is that Shoshannah doesn't know everythingโand
doesn't know how the future will play out.
She's involved in the shifters lives from before they are born until they die.
The ceremony at the lake to grieve and honor the dead in the war is led by
Shoshannah and though she isn't a god, the shifters revere her. She's become an
integral part of the mythos of Deep Creek, and when she's threatened by outside
forces, she steps up to help the shifters in their quest to save the national park.
Shoshannah is the one that told the lions about the prophecy that Marco and
Mason will have to save Deep Creekโbut it plays out a lot differently than how
things seem at first glance. Shoshannah has a lot of mystical powers, like being
able to star walk, but she also has emotions which make her a little
unpredictable. Having her be a part of the whole series has been fun. I think
her mystical nature really added to the world-building in Deep Creek.
When the shifters want to talk to her one-on-one, they go to the lake room off
the cave and meditate. They may or may not go out in a boat to await her
arrival, or they may sit on one of the little islands in the lake. They clear
their minds and await Shoshannah's appearanceโand it isn't guaranteed that she
will come. She often knows why the shifter is in the cave and tries to help them
with whatever issue they face. Some of the shifters are afraid to meet with her
(after all, she's a giant shapeshifter that has magical powers, haha) but she's
a good spirit.
From the first book, when she is mysterious and distant, to the last book
(CLAIMING HIS LIONESS, Sept 2018), where she is involved directly with the plot,
her journey over the course of the series is as important as the shifters we meet.
