Happy Halloween everyone! I'm thrilled to be here at Fresh Fiction to celebrate my new release, CONJURE book one in The Hoodoo Apprentice series.  Since I can't give you all a piece of candy, I've got something almost as sweet—a chance to win an e-copy of CONJURE! Read on for details.

In CONJURE, Emma Guthrie and her secret crush Cooper Beaumont discover a hidden 18-century pirate treasure and unwittingly unleash a wicked flesh-eating curse that only hoodoo magic can break. It takes place in the South Carolina Lowcountry which is one of the most beautiful and romantic places I've ever been. It also features Gullah mythology and hoodoo, an African-American folk magic. The Gullah's stories contain some of the most intriguing—and frankly terrifying—fantasy creatures I've ever heard of. Since it's Halloween, I thought I'd share some of the spookier creatures with you.

Plateyes - These evil spirits take the form of a dog, bear, horse or other big animal to torment a human, or at the behest of a root doctor. Plateyes play a prominent role in CONJURE appearing as giant seething dogs with slick, black fur, jagged teeth and florescent yellow eyes. Yikes!

Haints - Angry spirits who typically wait for a full moon to invade someone's house, entering through unlocked doors, open windows or key holes. Once inside, they rattle chains, slam doors, levitate beds or just about anything they can think of to torment the humans inside.

The Bugaloo - On moonless nights, this evil creature creeps out of the woods to roam the Lowcountry seeking revenge on male victims. One legend claims the Bugaloo was once a vile man who attacked a woman, killed a dog and stole from his neighbors. In retaliation, villagers dragged him into the woods one night, tied him to a tree, then beat him and cut off his hands and feet. When they returned for his body the next morning, he was gone. The only things that remained were the ropes that bound him and some scants drops of blood.

A Boohag - a malevolent spirit that uses witchcraft to control people. The boo hag sheds its skin at night, enters a person's house and "rides" them while they sleep, sucking their energy, chocking or suffocating them. The boohag can then steal the dead person's skin and impersonate them. In some traditions, boohags are reputed to be shape-shifters, and are considered similar to vampires.

These and other Gullah mythological creatures will appear throughout The Hoodoo Apprentice series. I love how creepy and vicious they are, and I've had the best time employing their special "talents" to torment Emma and Cooper and threaten everyone they love.

So what do you think? What creatures get your pulse racing and send you hiding under the covers? Are you scared of the run of the traditional bad guys like vampires or Frankenstein, or would one of these villains make you cry for your mommy?  Comment below and you'll be entered to win a free e-copy of CONJURE!

Thanks for reading and good luck!

~Lea

Oooh Mythical and Enchanting! so exciting!!! Beautiful cover
too!
(Candice Duffey 1:34pm November 2, 2012)

I would love to read this book. I am not frightened by any of the mythical/paranormal beasts. There are far too many of the real ones in this sad world. So, I love retreating to a world where the beasts can be overcome in under 300 or so pages. LOL
(Kelly Knapp 3:01pm November 2, 2012)

I do not like bug ... not because they scare me but because they bite and make my skin crawl. I am unsure why I do not like vampire ... maybe it is the bite thing?
(Shelby S 3:45pm November 2, 2012)

I THINK THE BOOHAG WOULD HAVE ME RACING FOR A GOOD HIDING
SPACE SO IT WON'T FIND ME. BOOHAG IS A REALLY FRIGHTENING
CREATURE AND I WOULDN'T BE CAUGHT IN A ROOM WITH IT. LOOKS
LIKE A GREAT READ LOVE TO WIN IT.
(Shelly Caggiano 4:26pm November 2, 2012)

It's not the creepy scary that scares me it's the wolf in sheep's clothing. Beware of what you don't realize is dangerous!
Good luck and happy writing!
(Tracie Travis 5:24pm November 2, 2012)

this book sounds very interesting and would really love to read it
(Kimberly Hoefs 5:53pm November 2, 2012)

This looks like a great read. I am not scared by most of the popular creatures. I think the haints would be more scary then the others. The unseen things that you cant explain I think are more scary. I would love to win a copy to read.
(Emily Bowes 5:53pm November 2, 2012)

I am more scared of ghosts that make occasional noises. I once heard footsteps outside my bedroom door and they would go into a hallway where there was just a wall...
(Connie Schultz 6:18pm November 2, 2012)

agree wuith what you do not realize is dangerous, thanks for this chance to win!
(Debbi Shaw 6:20pm November 2, 2012)

(Jennifer Beck 7:00pm November 2, 2012)

Thank you for the post...the story sounds fantastic! Just from the ones you have listed, the Boohag would be enough to scare me!!
(Michele Hayes 7:17pm November 2, 2012)

A Boohag would make my blood run cold as it sounds like
there's just no way to fight it. (shudders...)

Sounds like a great read!!
(Theresa Dunlap 8:52pm November 2, 2012)

All of these creatures scare me. I would have nighmares if I met just one of them. But!!! This book is just the one to give my best friend as a gift. She loves all these creatures. I hope I win.
(Kathleen Yohanna 8:56pm November 2, 2012)

This sounds like a very good book! I think I'd be afraid of any of your creatures.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.
(Karen Prentice 10:52pm November 2, 2012)
