Fight Song - Rachel Platten

This song so sums up Selene Genji's journey.  Like that "small boat in the ocean" her mere presence in the past keeps sending out "big waves" of changes in the history she knew.  Her actions create other waves with unpredictable results, meaning she might be the "one match" that "creates an explosion" decades before it should have happened.  And despite the odds, despite the doubts that assail her, she keeps fighting.   It also applies to Kayle Owen, whose own decisions may also help change the fate of the Earth as well as his own fate.  He's going to believe, even when no one else does.  No matter what happens, they've both "got a lot fight left in" them.

Anti-Hero - Taylor Swift

In the first book of the series (In Our Stars), Selene Genji actually says "Me.  I'm the problem."  (This was written before Taylor Swift's song Anti-Hero was released.  Two great minds, I guess, hers obviously a lot greater than mine.)   Just as the song talks about self-doubt and how others see us, Selene has to deal with the reality that her mere existence causes serious problems because of how others see her.  To many, she really is "the monster on the hill."  Having in her life seen everything taken from her, everyone leaving, she has to deal with and overcome the fears that she'll have to watch Kayle leave as well.  That despite everything she tries the Earth may still be doomed.  Midnight is also when the ghosts of Selene's past come to haunt her, especially those friends she has seen die and those killed in the future war she had to fight in.  Sometimes it feels as if it is her against the world.  But is it really?

Invincible - Pat Benatar

This song almost describes the climatic events that determine whether Selene Genji will be killed by those who fear her and refuse to listen to her.  She and Kayle have "nowhere (they) can run to anymore," and must "stand up and face the enemy" in what literally is a "do or die situation." Their survival, and maybe the fate of the Earth, depend on the answer to "won't anybody help us?"  (And, since Selene looks to the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius for guidance, the song's title also reflects one of the sayings in that book - "Kindness is invincible - if it is sincere.")

Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done to Deserve This?

This song's title pretty much talks about Selene Genji's life to this point.  "What have I done to deserve this?"  She never asked to be born as an "alloy" with some alien DNA genetically engineered into her genome.  All of her life, she's been treated as an alien on her own world, always an outsider, always alone, facing constant threats from the same people who killed her mother, and fighting in an apparently endless war on Earth, the Moon, and Mars.  Kayle Owen has also faced this in his life, losing his father at an early age, and having to struggle to clear his father's name and against unjust treatment by some high-ranking officers in Earth Guard.  Neither one knows "how (they're) gonna get through."  Until they meet each other.

Theme of Mitsuha - RADWIMPS

This music from the movie Kimi No Nawa (Your Name) encapsulates a lot of the story of the books and the struggles of Selene Genji.  Explaining just how many parallels there are between them would involve a lot of spoilers about the movie.  (If you haven't seen Your Name, what are you waiting for?)  One of the parts I most like about the movie, though, is that in the end it requires both Mitsuha and Taki to do what must be done.  This isn't someone rescuing someone else.  It's two people who can only do what must be done if they both work together to achieve what seems impossible.  That also describes how Selene and Kayle have to depend on each other, and believe in each other.  Alone, they were both as doomed as the Earth itself.  Together, they not only save each other, but just might succeed in saving the Earth.

DESTINY'S WAY by Jack Campbell

Doomed Earth #2

Lieutenant Selene Genji is hurled into the past to try and save a world that doesn’t want her in this action-packed adventure from New York Times bestselling author Jack Campbell.

Earth was destroyed on June 12, 2180. Lieutenant Selene Genji watched it happen. And only she can prevent it.

Thrown forty years into the past, into a time before the Universal War began, Genji can only guess what to do to change the events that led to the death of all humanity. She has no way of knowing the long-term impacts of her actions and can only depend on her instincts.

But many of the people Genji’s trying to save want her dead. Her creation was an experiment: a fusing of human and alien DNA. To them, she’s a monster who can’t be trusted, a tool of the aliens who have just made first contact.

Fortunately, she has an unshakable ally in Lieutenant Kayl Owen, who has risked everything to help her mission. Declared a traitor to humanity by Earth Guard, Owen is determined to help Genji save the Earth.

Even if he dies trying.
