Terrie Farley Moran | Conversations in Character with Jessica Fletcher

Book Title: MURDER, SHE WROTE: MURDER BACKSTAGE

Character Name: Jessica Fletcher

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

I was blessed to be born into a loving family with many relatives, and an especially large pool of cousins on both sides of the Atlantic. As much as I love all my cousins, I have to confess that my favorite is Emma Macgill, who is now a famous international actor whose career began on the stage in her hometown of London.

What is your greatest talent?

I am not sure that you would call it a talent since is a trait that more often than not gets me into difficulty, but I would have to admit that my curious nature, which is a huge help in my current profession as a mystery writer, often leads me down a convoluted path when an actual crime occurs that involves me or someone I know.

Significant other?

I was joyfully married for many years to my beloved husband, Frank Fletcher, who passed away far too young. Our life together was loving and fulfilling. We also adopted Frank’s brother’s child, Grady Fletcher, when Grady’s parents were killed in an accident, so I not only have wonderful memories of my life with Frank, I also have Grady, his wife Donna and their young son, Frank, to remind me that life does go on.

Where do you live?

I live in a lovely small town called Cabot Cove perched on the Atlantic coast of Maine.

I view it as quite rustic, with its gorgeous countryside and quaint fishing village aura, although I have heard our Sheriff, Mort Metzger, complain that we have an extraordinary number of murders for a tiny town of less than four thousand residents.

How do you feel about the place you are presently visiting?

My dear cousin Emma invited me, along with a few of my Cabot Cove friends, to visit her while she is performing in a place I had never visited: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I have found Edmonton to be an attractive city filled with fascinating sites and charming people. Our only problem is that someone committed a murder in the theater where Emma is scheduled to perform. If the murder isn’t solved, we may never get to see Emma on stage.

What do you do for a living?

For many years I was a high school English teacher which I found very fulfilling. I guided young people as they blossomed and grew while learning to explore the world through literature. Then, after my husband died, I filled in the lonely hours at home by writing a book which, without my knowledge, my nephew Grady passed along to a friend in a publishing firm. I was shocked when they offered to buy and publish The Corpse Danced at Midnight, which turned out to be a success, so I have been writing novels ever since.

Greatest source of joy?

Without a doubt, my greatest joy is spending time with Grady, Donna and young Frank.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

When I am at home and not working on my latest murder mystery, I spend a great deal of time fishing, bike riding, and working on various committees for community betterment. Whenever I have a long block of free time, I travel to visit friends and relatives all over the globe.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

I like to think that I am a fairly well-balanced person, however I must confess that when some sort of crime or wrongdoing occurs either right in front of me or involves someone I know, I cannot help myself from trying to resolve the problem and getting life back to normal for all concerned.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

Well, as I mentioned earlier, along with my good friends, Seth Hazlitt and Mort and Maureen Metzger, I have traveled to Edmonton for a fun vacation that includes touring the city and enjoying the company of my cousin, Emma Macgill, and her theater colleagues. Unfortunately, a stagehand was murdered in the theater, and Emma and I were potential suspects. I have been diligently trying to discover who the killer is, not only to clear our names but because, as they say in Hollywood, “the show must go on.”

Murder, She Wrote: Murder Backstage

The newest entry in the USA Today bestselling Murder, She Wrote series.

Jessica Fletcher’s British cousin, Emma MacGill, will be traveling to Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, to perform with internationally famous star of stage, screen, and television Derek Braverman in an old-fashioned musical review. Emma would love for Jessica to join her there and suggests she bring along some friends. Having just finished her latest book, Jessica is ready for a vacation and is delighted to agree.  Dr. Seth Hazlitt and Sheriff Mort Metzger are huge fans of Braverman, so they are eager to tag along, and their fanboy behavior gives Jessica and Mort’s wife, Maureen, more than occasional cause to roll their eyes.

Upon arrival in Edmonton, Jessica is quickly outed as mystery writer J. B. Fletcher, and despite numerous protests, a hotel staffer arranges a book signing for her. This and touristy adventures arranged for the group make for a much busier trip than Jessica was expecting. When a hotel bartender, who also happens to be a stagehand for Emma’s play, turns up dead backstage at the theater, Jessica’s fun and relaxing vacation quickly becomes anything but.
